I'm excited to present this cover to you, it's one of my favorite Beatles songs and I get to show off my REAL 1966 Gibson J-160e!
The Beatles recorded this song on Feb 23rd, 1967 for the Sgt Pepper album. Paul wrote the song and plays piano on the backing track. John and George both played their acoustic-electric Gibson J160e guitars, and Ringo of course played drums. Overdubs would be recorded on Feb 24 and other later dates
They recorded the song in the key of B, but later slowed down the speed on the tape machine, which lowered the pitch slightly- somewhere between Bb and B. MY COVER is in the original key of B, the way they recorded it originally
For the Pepper sessions, the Beatles and George Martin experimented with Direct Injection (DI). This meant plugging their electric instruments directly into the console, bypassing their amplifiers. Because John and George's J160e's had a pickup, they could plug these acoustics in DI. At the beginning of the Lovely Rita recording (2017 box set outtake) you can hear John say his 'lead is going in and out' meaning his guitar cable was broken and his signal was getting shut off randomly. This confirms that they were plugging in these guitars for the recording, otherwise they would not need a guitar cable and would rely on normal mic'ing of the acoustic guitars
I'm not sure if they also mic'd up the acoustics, in addition to DI. The tone is very bright, unlike the DI tone you hear on Lucy in the Sky. In 1965 John and George experimented with placing the P90 pickup on the J160 in different locations, closer to the bridge, or in the middle of the soundhole. By 1967, the pickup was at the bottom of the soundhole, which produces a brighter tone. It's hard to say if they EQ'd the direct tone to be brighter for Lovely Rita, or combined the DI signal with a microphone
For my cover, I'm BOTH mic'ing the J160 and going DI into my interface. I don't want to drill holes into my 1966 J160 to place the pickup lower towards the bridge. Combining the mic signal with the DI makes the tone brighter, which I need anyway because my pickup is darker up by the neck
Another tonal aspect of the guitars on this song is Tape Flanging (ADT). This effect was created at EMI in 1966 and used heavily on Revolver and Sgt Pepper. The wobbly filtered sound you hear on the acoustic guitars is this slight difference in speed on the two tape machines. I'm recreating this effect with my Strymon Deco tape plug-in
My Gear:
1966 Gibson J160e
(all original except the tuners, which are vintage Klusons)
Neumann TLM-103
Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 (my interface which I'm going DI into)

All these years, I've only been able to hear one guitar on this song. Even with the box set outtake. Now I can hear it. First a Sokil cover, then one from you. Great start to the week!
Where is this Sokil cover?
@@DonTSmithI feel fine! He’s even changed his sweater so you know he means business
@@ronanfitzgerald1507 amazing comment
Glad you kept in in B so I can play bass to it!
I am on a huge Sgt Pepper kick right now and I needed this sooo much
On acoustic guitars only it almost transforms into a different song. Very interesting.
Isn't it incredible. I've just discovered how much I focus on the bass and drums in this song. Without them I almost don't recognize it!

One of my favorite Beatles tunes, and an underrated one at that! Fantastic cover, the guitars sounded great!
The covers that magically split guitar parts we've only heard in mono before sound the most magical. Thank you Sam!
One of my favorites on Pepper. Excellent.
Perfect playing. A+++
You are the reason why I learn something new every day! You did a great job at playing the cover!🎸🤘😎 0:04
Finally! Someone played it right! Bravo!!
Amazing as always KING!!
This is unbelieveble! 👏🏻👏🏻😱
Mind-blowingly great, Sam! Thank you!
Everything about this song is perfect. Well done Sam
Happy holidays Sam. Great content all year
This is excellent!
Great!!
Great as usual Sam 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Congrats mate ✌🏻🎸🎶
Cool! I never knew there were two acoustics! Great to see you playing that j-160e! fantastic job as usual!
This is outstanding.
Really impressed with your covers. That Gibson sounds magical. Keep up the great work.
So great-what a weird and wonderful tune. Well done.
my fav
Such a cool sound has the guitar
👌👌
Ps: I loved the chorus effect that it has. 👍👍
Good going sam.... always love your covers❤
Oh Sam, really strong and very straight. Now I know to play this song. Thank you. I wish you happy Christmas and a good Year 2024
Underrated song imo, this Gibson J-160E sounds FANTASTIC!
Awesome job! Another Day is a fun song too with a lot of chords like Lovely Rita
Bloody Marvelous! Cheers Sam!
Excelente!
The last vamped chords sounds like all together now!
i never knew there were two guitars?! mind blown.
this is a lovely cover
I always thought it was one guitar, interesting! Thanks Sam
This is a nice cover from a nice song
🤔🎧 I didn’t know they experimented with pick
up placement on their J160e models. Thanks for the backstory on this.
Amazing Sam!! :)
The rhythm's in the guitars
Lovely Sam 😎🎸☮️
King Popkin!
I'm fairly certain John is strumming all throughout the intro with no pauses but this is a great cover Sam. Most people don't realize there's two acoustic guitars. Even though they were recorded on separate tracks they're almost always mixed together.
I isolated the album mix AND the 2017 final outtake and can say with 100% certainty this is what John is playing
@@sampopkin hmmmm You have me intrigued. I'll have to listen to the Atmos mix again and see.
Actually listen to this. It’s where I heard john’s parts clearly ua-cam.com/video/JWIgt4ONPkU/v-deo.htmlsi=zdDR8Z3qdtd6ynOD
Great job! Any chance you upload the same cover but with the speed lowered just like the original song? 😄
Sure!
Wonderfoul...i hope someday you can make a cover of Art of dying by george, there's no exist covers in UA-cam
I play this on the piano in Bb, the solo is actually pretty easy in that key.
Let’s go one of my Top 5 beatle songs
Same
Cool!
Excellent cover! Noticed John is married and George isn’t?
😂I’m newly married and sometimes t forget to take the ring off. Or I guess it’s an Easter egg
Excellent work as always, Sam. On a slightly pedantic theory note, just want to point out that it is in the key of E, not B.
Yeah true
Is it confirmed at 0:14 that the bottom guitar is George? I have a feeling it’s John because of the rhythmic pattern. John plays that pattern a lot in their tunes. Just a thought.
Not 100% confirmed but seems right that George would be on lead and John on rhythm
omg
can you do the lead and rhythm guitar on strawberry fields?
Fantastic from you although no more vocal on the back, but keep it up and may God bless your channel
What kind of strings do you have on your J-160e? I just ordered one the other day and I can’t decide between flats and nickel rounds
For this I’m using Ernie ball rock and roll 11 rounds
Could do a bass cover of this song?
Yes just need a rickenbacker bass
Going by the clothes it’s John playing the top guitar and Paul in the bottom ?
George on the bottom, but yeah
Can we please do a cover of Being for the benefit of me kite together? Me on bass?? This is so good and it’s like the sister song to me.
I’d love to!!
@@sampopkin How would we get started on that?
On second thought, Please Please Me would be a better option for guitar. I'm happy to sing and play drums and bass. I can't recall if you've done that cover before.
@@evyalley do you have fb or insta? Easier to plan there
@@sampopkin Yes! I messaged you on insta.
Is there any kind of modulation in the bottom guitar? Thx
Yes check description, I added some (faux) tape flanging
Huh, I thought Lovely Rita was recorded in G/C then sped up to B/E, or was that just the solo?
They recorded it in B, as heard on the pepper outtake. The lead vocals and george Martin’s piano solo were recorded at a slower/lower pitch then sped up. And the song was released a little slower/lower than B
Are you using flatwound strings?
Ernie ball rock and roll pure nickel 11 roundwounds
@@sampopkin Thank you!!
If they're DI, how do they sound so acoustic?
That's for electric guitars and basses. J160e models have electric PU's, so they could have used them through DI.
I also mic’d them and combined the signals
@@patrii9100 true but here's the thing: they're not like modern day pickups that get installed inside acoustics. The J160E has a P90 wired essentially the same as electric guitar pickup. Listen to I Feel Fine to know what they sound like plugged in.
To know what they sound like DI also listen to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. It’s like an acoustic sound but bad and dull
@@sampopkin Idk. It sounds like it's mic'ed to me. You wouldn't capture the sounds of the strings via the pickup. Through the pickup it sounds more like a regular acoustic.
The original is recorded in 431 hz not 440 hz.
I know, I wanted to release the way they originally recorded it. Easier for people learning to play along to
More likely tape speed manipulated to than recorded in, perhaps.
Was that on purpose or little mistake? at 2:01 you almost played a D chord but switched pretty fast to an A 😅
Just a little mistake haha
