Roz-dez-ven-ski. He sufferred from extreme vertigo which made it difficult for him to stand on the conductor's podium. I was working for the BBC Music Division when he became the Principal Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and it was my great privilege to observe him at work.
Sibelius is my dude. This is my favorite piece by him.
Congratulations on the reaction! This is one of the most beautiful symphonies of the 20th century and the two final movements are magnificent.
To listen the 3rd and 4th movements, I strongly suggest the interpretation that, for me, is the best or, at least, one of the best, directed by George Szell
Now, get ready... (SPOILER ALERT!): You will hardly find a piece of music that gives you such a great feeling of joy and freedom. In the end, you will feel that you are in a huge open space, completely overwhelmed by a feeling of splendorous happiness and freedom. The end is the best expression of a beautiful and grandiose landscape where you feel that you are the freest of all men. Enjoy! 🤗
The ending is very refreshing, especially after the dark part just before.
You should react to Tchaikovsky’s the nutcracker. It is the most well known classical work amongst pop culture, you’ll recognise at least 5 very famous melodies and one funny surprise that I really want to see your reaction to
4:26 Violin Concerto
The first movement can seem a bit disjointed at first, but it may be intentionally so: it's as if the music starts out searching for direction, but gains confidence as the movement goes on. The second movement has been interpreted as a protest against Russian rule over Finland.
But the original inspiration for this symphony isn't in Finland, but in Italy where Sibelius wrote most of the symphony during a year-long stay. It wasn't originally intended to be a symphony at all, but rather a tone poem based on Dante's Divine Comedy, and the beginning of the second movement was originally going to be the beginning of the piece. That's why the opening theme of that movement is a bit reminiscent of Gregorian chant. Sibelius ended up scrapping the tone poem and reworking the material he had written for it into this symphony.
He puts more folk elements into the second, this is typical going forward with these works. This is one of his most popular symphonies, the 5th also. Like Brahms he's something of a successor to Beethoven, with development of themes.
I completely agree with you about the 2nd movement 😁
To Be Continued.... 😎
You comment about a dramatic line at the end of the 2nd movement. Listen to the next two movements and you may be blown away by the drama. This symphony should be heard in its entirety in one sitting. And, you need to assess what you are hearing in the context of history. Sibelius wrote this when Finland was still part of the Russian Empire. You could view this is an appeal to the Finns to revolt and win their freedom. That is certainly how the Russians viewed it. The Finns did revolt, and they did win their freedom.
Oh I love Sibelius.
you have to listen to his 7th symphony at some point! Check out the Karajan recording!
Hey GIDI, if you need some recomendations, just have a look at my playlist for classical music!
Esta es una gran obra musical de Jean Sibelius, lástima que no activaste los subtítulos para saber lo que decías, quedo en espera de cierre de tu reacción hacia esta obra.. Saludos desde Ciudad de Guatemala en Centro América.
Don't worry, it comes together in the next two movements. Just introducing the main characters with the first two movements
I was surprised by the final comments. It's very dramatic. I thought you were about to say the slow movement goes on slightly too long, particularly in the final dramatic stretch.
I really hope that you continue with some more Shostakovich symphonies, maybe No. 7 next? Leningrad symphony which was written during the Nazi seige of Lenningrad in WW2
@@Alix777. I totally agree, my favourite, but I think it's not easy to listen for someone who is just discovering Shostakovich, it needs a lot of re-listening
You cut off the 2nd movement before the last note!😡
