I always wondered what she was actually like, but I never knew she was on T.V. - I can see the charm despite what I thought about what she chose to do. Thank you so much for uploading this =)
How very true. Remember the WML episode with Dorothy Kilgallen's children? So proper and behaved they were. And when they went to shake hands with the panel, the boy bowed and the girl cursied. I bet most girls today don't even know HOW to curtsy properly!
@minnesotajohn29 Dorothy asks if she's known for her milinary. Milinary is a more formal word for hats that can also mean hat trim and clothing designed/made by a hatter.
Yeah, she was a horrid human being. However, being so, enabled her to make a living and be famous. That's show business. I am fascinated how different the world and entertainment industry was then, compared to now. Or at least I think it is...
Horrid, horrid person, you are so right. She was an arch conservative, along with Ginger Rogers' mother (and Rogers herself) and a slew of too many other Hollywood personalities as well as theatre; she'd have been the chief huntress at the Salem witch trials. She's an amusing character, with her large stride and flamboyant style of speech and dress, without a kind bone in her large-boned body. No kind words to say about this horror of a thing.
daniel stanwyck taergehtsiram In spite of all this, Hedda Hopper DID stand up for Lucille Ball, when HUAC, the VERY organization that Hedda and Ginger (AND Ginger's Mother) supported, accused her of being a Communist sympathizer. And Ginger Rogers probably also did the same for Lucy, too.
+daniel stanwyck she made me hate Helen Mirren, who plays her in the new TRUMBO movie, about Dalton Trumbo, who was one of the so-called Hollywood Ten who were blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s. She's gotten Golden Globe and SAG nominations and might get an Oscar nod next week.I'm sure Miss Hopper would've loved that!
musicaltheatergeek79 Actually, wouldn't Hopper have hated seeing her character be portrayed in a negative light, which is what the film (even though I haven't seen it) does? Remember, the only people who idolize her are right-wing conservatives. Nobody in Hollywood liked her, except for a few.
@TheSunmanho I am not sure what your comment has to do with anything I said in mine. I was not talking about Hedda Hopper, I was refering to the good manners used to be used by people. You know, like standing to greet your elders.......which by the way is also in the Bible....RESPECT for elders (and others).
Another example of WML urbanity and good manners. Here rival showbiznia columnists Hedda Hopper (Hollywood gossip) and DK (Broadway plus crime and politics) share the stage. They have enough class and civility to have fun playing the game. ( 4:22 ) Dorothy stands to greet her rival. Today, certain TV producers would book them on the same stage and pray for a huge ratings-busting cat fight. RE: Peter Lind Hayes' impersonation of Louella Parsons --- rude . . . and spot on! LOL
@@nelixsulu6201 no I think she looks good fun at parties. you dont get a position like that without knowing a lotta people in hollywood. Its all about contacts.
Interesting woman, began acting early in silent films, became a helpful blacklister during the McCarthy era...can't really say admirable, but interesting indeed.
I think this age of "instant" everything has done so much to kill manners and politeness. I quit posting on most forums, because of the absolute and down right abuse people heap on others, simply because they can without reprecussions. I long for the days of my childhood when we were taught mannors in school, home and church.
@LadyDragonsblood History runs in cycles. Often social norms swing from extreme right to extreme left and back again over the span of a couple generations. Many baby boomers felt that the old way of repressing your feelings, politeness for show, and "do as you're told" attitudes were hypocritical. Now my generation believes it's more honest to say what you feel, be yourself and question all authority, but the pendulum is again starting to swing back to the right. It's going to create conflict.
BRADTRIMBLE: Hedda did get wacked...several times. Lauren Bacall wrote that she slammed Hedda in the ass at a party for writing bad things about her. Joseph Cotton did something similar. Spencer Tracey pretended to pull in a chair so Hedda could sit but instead pulled it out so she could fall flat on her ass at a party. Hedda took it in stride until it was time to write her column.
Can't believe she was William Hopper's mother. He was such a gentleman.
Also very handsome
I've only recently discovered this amazing show ! I love , love , love it !
Yes, Vasp99 and all of TV was................free...yes free. It was an amazing time....Vasp99.

"now it isnt Louella Parsons is it?" hahahahaah they were archi-rivals :P
Hedda Hopper was wicked.

I've noticed that too about recognizing voices.

LADYDRAGONSBLOOD: But some elders don't deserve respect...any kind...even from children.

@minnesotajohn29 Millinery i believe. A term not widely heard now.
No one really liked Hedda.
Very few I hear.

@@en6278 It was probably fake

.... including herself.
Ghastly woman

Less people like her around the better!
Roads are socialist. Communism is simply giving up on the freedom of managing your own finances.
@calihartley2010 Wrong again troll. 3 strikes, you're OUT. No more feeing you.
@calihartley2010 Only if I wore what she has on in this clip. Then i'd look like a skinny Devine the actor. lol
She was a bully
another cowardice mccarthy conspirator.
Very funny when Mr. Hayes asked if it was Louella Parsons. THAT was her arch-rival.
Coming from Feud
Hedda, shame on you!
I wonder if she refused to see "Spartacus" back in 1960, boycotted it, because Dalton Trumbo was the writer?
She's a horrid person if that's true.
This was such a fun show. It should make a comeback.

Hedda was like 7O here.
Arlene thought it was Grace Kelly coming back from Monaco.....
Does anyone know what word it is Dorothy uses to describe Hedda's love of hats? Millieri?
John T millinery.: hats ; Hedda was famous for them, known to buy over 300 a year
That is a hat.
Can we please please please get a Hedda Hopper biopic with Meryl Streep?
who is here from Feud

Fuck HUAC. They were out-of-whack (pun intended).
Im surprised she never got "Whacked", A slimey bi-product of our pathetic celebrity culture i suppose.
