Dinah Washington is the most undercelebrated vocalist in recording history. For phrasing, there simply is no one better. What we are viewing here is what is called, "owning a song". Simply divine.
LOL...SHE IS NOT....undercelebrated.....she is revered by music lovers....you expect the average hayseed to appreciate greatness....in any field?...hint...they never do
U are so right when it comes to phasing...sister got it hands down...right up there with Sinatra, Williams, Cole...owns the hell outta any song she sings....enuff said
Dinah was the greatest jazz singer on the planet. No one can touch her and many emulated her. Sarah, Ella, Billie, and so many other shoes cannot be filled. Thank God for these warm, powerful women showing us how it's done. Treasure them forever.
Dinah always brings a tear to my eye. She could "sell" a song like no other. The first time I heard "What a Diff'rence a Day Made", I was hooked and have remained so for forty years.
Her speaking voice was super clear so what did anyone expect when she started singing. I read in a bio written by her that she was known for enunciation and crystal clear vocals
I can listen to Dinah Washinton all day, and do when I've got stuff to do around the place. I don't get as much done, though. I always find phrases and nuances I hadn't noticed before.
My dad and all his friends loved this stuff. I played jimi hendrix and led zepphlin and black sabbath and funkadelics but he had and his friends loved ths stuff. i sure appreciate youtube. peace
My mother met Dinah when she did a show in San Diego before I was born; needless to say, for mom, it was indeed a life changing experience. I go to mom's resting place now and either take my portable record player or cd player and put some Dinah music on, I can feel mom and Dinah both looking down at me.
Thanx from my deep inner soul, I love this lady. have been listening to her for a looong time. aside from 'Billie' there is no other, maybe Carmen. thanx
Hell yeah, she did. I heard she once referred to Dinah as her 'goddess.' I especially hear it in 'Cry Me A River.' ua-cam.com/video/tx6MQ7tmgSc/v-deo.html
More straight up than Ella, Sarah, Billie, or anybody else. Been recording for half a century and have lots of Dinah, but seeing her live is just great, simply great. Thanks.
Dinah was much more beautiful than most of her photos indicated. Always stylish and beautifully groomed, too. Her facial expressions were reflected in early performances by Diana Ross (and there is a physical resemblence there) and Dinah as can be seen and heard was a tremendous influence on the early Nancy Wilson, who achieved the remarkable feat of being influenced by a great star but ultimately became an inimitable star herself.
Dinah does a great job, although different, of Bessie's dark but soulful classic. I would encourage anyone who likes this to listen to Bessie Smith's original (not on UA-cam yet, why not???)of the same title "Send me to the (E)'lectic Chair" Grand job, Dinah!
I agree 103% on that one. I really do enjoy Amy also. I "discovered" her for myself a few months before she became a household name, and I admit I was blown away by her, but in a different way that I am blown away by Aretha, especially her early stuff. i have not heard anything or anyone like Aretha then or now to be precise. Check out the recent release of her unreleased stuff! Emotion to the nth degree.
"Go ahead and burn me/Cos i don't care !" Dinah was a true force of nature who could sing anything. Like her equally short lived admirer Amy Winehouse, she lived a volatile public lifestyle but at the peak of her powers nobody could touch her. Her 1956 album "The Swingin' Miss D" is up there with Frank's "Songs For Swingin' Lovers" and Sammy Davis Jnr's "The Wham Of Sam" for sheer brilliance. Arranged by Quincy Jones who never put a foot wrong. No wonder Frank hired him. The cheeky wink at the end proves that Dinah knew she was a class act. And so do we.
Incredible, simply beautiful. The album destination Moon by Deborah Cox is a wonderful album you all should pick it up. She does a great job of Dinah tunes. Thanks for sharing this classy video. The lyrics are hilarious.
man alive i was so happy to find this song, this was one of my moms favorite singers, and now i see why. That song is so cool& her voice is the bomb!!AWESOME

Sorry but Ella 😅😅😅
Right?! discovered her from the opening credits in Donnie Brasco, have been hooked ever since, she’s my favorite, even over Billie, Ella and Eartha ❤
Wasn't no AutoTune back in 58...you could either sing or not, no fooling anyone. I miss those days.
They had to sing a song flawlessly from beginning to end to get it on wax. No "cut" and editing
Indeed
i realize it's quite off topic but does anybody know a good site to watch newly released movies online?
@Bryant Finn lately I have been using flixzone. You can find it on google =)
@Ford Emery Definitely, have been watching on flixzone for years myself =)
She was an incredible singer. Such phrasing!
Her voice is razor sharp. one of the best ever.
She has such a wonderful voice

Dinah always brings a tear to my eye. She could "sell" a song like no other. The first time I heard "What a Diff'rence a Day Made", I was hooked and have remained so for forty years.
This is actually incredible
Her speaking voice was super clear so what did anyone expect when she started singing. I read in a bio written by her that she was known for enunciation and crystal clear vocals
The best in my opinion! Unfortunate she passed away at such a young age. She was one of the greats.
I can listen to Dinah Washinton all day, and do when I've got stuff to do around the place. I don't get as much done, though. I always find phrases and nuances I hadn't noticed before.
Dinah Washington is amazing singer and her performance here is a testimony to her greatness.
WHAT a performer, omg RIP Dinah! What a set of eyes!!!!!
A great song, a great story, beautifully sung by the "Queen" !
Dinah was in the same stratosphere as Bessie, Billie, Ella, and Sarah. Ms. Wahington was a shining star for damn sure.
My friend Carmen loves Dinah. And I love too (both).

Dinah is my number one jazz vocalist. Period.
Dinah...the Queen of Rhythm and Blues..the line of descent is this...Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Dinah, Aretha, Chaka, MJB..that's the lineage
Sarah was utterly fabulous - just like Dinah.
Both did it their way. Nobody today can compare to either one.
I love her. Period.
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Classic and full of a radiant aura that rings authenticity. xo
QUEEN
Wow Dinah Washington is amazing. God bless her
Lyrics, timing, phrasing, tone, expressions,... Fucking perfect. All hail Dinah Washington.
this is the kind of performance that makes me wonder why I haven't been listening to jazz vocalists 24/7.
Fabulous voice & styling!
Incredible!! Dinah's phrasing is spot on point!! She's my absolute all time favorite. I love you Dinah!!!
Wow, Amy Winehouse did really adopt/learn her style of singing.
Haha yep! She idolized her. Always gushed about her in interviews
+Barbara Gordon ....and many more ;-)
...U mean tried 2 steal....
Hell yeah, she did. I heard she once referred to Dinah as her 'goddess.' I especially hear it in 'Cry Me A River.' ua-cam.com/video/tx6MQ7tmgSc/v-deo.html
Whenever I hear her, it's like tasting a delicious chocolate..
Judie is an amazing song.

Yes I have heard it. This lady was simply incredible.

Que placentero, escuchar, grandes voces femeninas!!!! En el Jazz!!! Nacieron para cantar!!!!!!!! Que siempre, nos acompañen❤
There is no such thing as better than. If you can make someone feel it, that's all that matters...

Perfect in every way
Charme, beleza, elegância, sem falar numa voz incrível! É um prazer assisti-la!!!
Aren't you lucky to come from such a talented family. I hope you listen to this music too! It's the best....
In New Orleans, Lady BJ Crosby , is an
awesome singer. She was in HarlemSong and a few other Broadway musicals.
Beautiful woman with a huge talent !!!
RIP
One of the naughtiest, lovely, humorous songs in jazz ;).
wonderful voice.
what else can I say? she's unique!
It's so good to hear this great voice again. Love her especially when she sang with Brook Benton. thanks for posting this.

Her delivery is impeccable.
i love this style
Thanks jimnick1! Dinah Washington is so nice.
Deserves 1,000,000 hits. Gifted Amy Winehouse with the jazz story telling voice. A lyric that demands brilliance, Ms. Dinah put her soul to it.
@mortitio YES LAWD! Long live Dinah til the end of time and the beginning of new time.
I agree 103% on that one. I really do enjoy Amy also. i luv ha voice.
Dinah Washington singing Bessie Smith! Two of the greatest, and oh how I enjoyed this!!
This December will make 46 years since Dinah's been gone and I STILL HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING REMOTELY CLOSE TO HER! There will NEVER be another Dinah!
"Go ahead and burn me/Cos i don't care !" Dinah was a true force of nature who could
sing anything. Like her equally short lived admirer Amy Winehouse, she lived a volatile

And so do we.
I have only recently begun to get into Dina Washington. I’m fascinated with her voice.
