URM Academy This entire channel is amazing and I want to support it. And yes, I don’t always like the bands he records, but Mr. Sturgis is a genius when it comes to making your mix sound massive.
Great, clear and concise tutorial. I learned myself the hard way about carving in solo and adding in context. Awesome that you mentioned that. It's going to save a lot of people a lot of heartache. I use that philosophy regardless of the instrument I'm futzing with.
Yeah I had an issue with the sound of mine for the song I’m putting out tomorrow I need to brush up on this All I did was give it +2 decibels on the whole thing and it popped out and hit harder I want to know if I could have EQ’d it any better
Marijan Desin Your take/sample might not be so great. Maybe try a different mic? Or perhaps try the take again. If you’re using samples, maybe try a different one. Also, Joey makes large “boosts” in his EQ. Cutting is great and shouldn’t scare you at all, but be careful when boosting. This could be your problem. Joey can do it and make it sound good because he’s Joey. If your treatment in your studio is sub-par, you may want to reference your mix in a car/elsewhere to see if you really need that 10db boost at 75hz, or whatever. This is just from my experience, so I hope this helps!
Are you clipping? Distortion should only occur from EQ if it's an analog eq/analog plugin emulation or if you're clipping and getting digital distortion because of that.
That makes all the sense So I tend to use slower release/attack but than the Highs suffer from too much pumping Because I mix metal and theres a lot of kicks going on Logically It would take two different bands of compression/limiting Which all Mastering plugins already claim to incorporate Like ozone7 or Slate master or Fab-Lpro-L But I always have this issue
Great stuff Joey/Urm!!!. There is a mistake in the diagram: 800 hz in stead of 800 khz..;) (many thanks to : Mjaquie for pointing to my mistake first....:) :)
My only complaints on this album is the lyrics and the snare. Everything else makes up the best heavy mix ive ever heard. Please make a tutorial on the guitar tone.
matenorth sall I personally love the lyrics and snare. Everyone's different. He does write about more emotional stuff if you ever wanna give emmure a chance
rwl6935 Yeah man, sure but these guys are pros and I’m sure they can get there hands on something that’s been recorded by a drummer. Normal recordings don’t sound nearly that good and therefore will require much different processing, plus there’s the rest to consider like bleed etc, this an actual recording can provide
Because it is, and it's been happening for decades. It's faster and adds more definition with minimal hassle, which = a more efficient session. Also, there are no rules in audio.
@@brandoncooke6564 you're an idiot, clearly says kick sample at the start & makes reference to possibly opting for a different sample later in the video. Unlike you i did watch the video & while the eq tutorial is good, it would be nice if drummers actually played drums & not samples. Likewise would be nice to see some actual drum mixing as apposed to sample mixing.
@@dalemallory7150 youre an idiot how do you think he got the kick sample? From a real kick drum; this is metal mixing, you use samples/trigger for consistency when youre crafting a loud ass wall of sound. If you want wholly unedited/sampled drum mxing youre gonna wanna switch genres
Well aren't you just the little gatekeeper! Personally I don't care as long as it sounds good, so you go ahead and spend time with a real drummer and getting a real kick set up, and the rest of us will have the mix finished and it'll sound just as good, if not better. BTW, everything recorded on a computer is a sample.
Did you find this tutorial helpful?
Every single thing you fellas put out is really helpful. You guys are the best!
Love this channel guys! Everyday I learn something new!
Really useful, thank you very much!!!
URM Academy This entire channel is amazing and I want to support it. And yes, I don’t always like the bands he records, but Mr. Sturgis is a genius when it comes to making your mix sound massive.
yes, very helpful in fact
the best EQ is always from the mic selection and placement, the rest is adding a character that is appropriate for the style.
and of course, how the heck i forgot about the kick itself...
Do one for snare too!
Great, clear and concise tutorial.

"Little bit of EQ"
14db boost at 70hz and -22.5db at 100hz 😂
Was gonna say, by the look of the curve, that's not a "lil bit of eq" lol. Huge boost on high shelf as well
Still a little bit
THIS VIDEO IS ONE OF THE BETTER ONES I'VE EVER SEEN
This is gold! Thanks Joey!
The 9:00 is genius just what I was looking for - thanks!
What is the effect on the intro guitar?
I learned so much from this vid, thanks Joey 🙏😃
Don't forget to level-match if you're doing a lot of boosting!
Not necessary if you use Fabfilter Pro Q2, turn on autogain
ohhhhh dammit I want this plugin so much more now
Get it. Seriously. Changed my mixing process so much so fast. Being able to solo individual bands is a lifesaver too.
K
Is it better to put the gate before or after eq?
Working for this artificail drums and completely not working for read drum samples.
Simple and understandable rules that work 100%
can´t wait to see a video like this about snare!, thank for doing this guys!
How is the name of the song?
Yeah I had an issue with the sound of mine for the song I’m putting out tomorrow
I need to brush up on this
All I did was give it +2 decibels on the whole thing and it popped out and hit harder

My kick drums sound leagues better! Thank you Joey!
Thanks for watching!
Little bit of a boost in the high end at 11:02 there
Thank You
That's an amazing tutorial. A big thanks to you.
Thank you Joey!
Is only Cubase 9 come with more plugin inserts? or can you do this with Cubase artist 8.5?
Fuck that starting riff is heavy.
Amazing video !
Wow amazing vid!!!! Please do one on guitars please. Hi gain metal!!!
well done
My main problem is mastering kick bottom It always distorts!
Any suggestions?

Clipping? Are you using linear phase EQ? Are you using very fast attack/limiter on kicks? Could be anything you need to be more specific

Jeroen Simons there is a mistake in your comment. 800khz instead of 800hkz 😂👍
hahahaha!!! Yeah man, I see....:) I tried to help out, and made the chaos even bigger...;)
I got it, it’s hertkiloz :)

lyrics are 5th grade shit but the music is nice.
Guitar tone is kemper profile
Thanks joey :)
"Petriment... Parametric" :D
Cardboard = 800khz, maybe for dogs, hah.
Can someone tell me band and songname?
The band is Emmure. Not sure about the song
Will you give us a tutorial with a real bass drum...?
Jobe Lewis it is a real kick drum, but it is sampled, probably from toontrack superior drummer or something like that.

Korn + Slipknot =
Why is it acceptable to use samples?
Because it is, and it's been happening for decades. It's faster and adds more definition with minimal hassle, which = a more efficient session.
Also, there are no rules in audio.
Even early Metal records use sample
You lost me at “sample”. Ffs, real drums played by real drummers please.
That's too bad. Maybe you should have watched the video to know that he wasn't editing samples.

Too much dynamic imo.
what lol
I hope you're being sarcastic. I'm really worried about where modern mixing is going.
I was.
It is not incompatible ;).
In fact, there is loudness and the feeling of loudness; not really the same thing.
