The mechs not having autoloaders is also kind of explained in lore: The titans were originally built as farming equipment, and due to lack of resources to build dedicated war machines in the frontier, the existing titans were reworked to be weapons.
It wasn't built for farming at all Titans were created to help people build structures in space, after several years of war in a "desperate" attempt some pilots used those mech to fight

I absolutely adore the gun variety in this game. You can spend so many hours on some of these, learning their ins and outs, then switch it up and have a whole different play style. Some are so unique and interesting
Certain point-defense-cannons have programable burst fire modes. It could easily be a function for the predator cannon that is limited to conserve energy and ammunition, and reduce overheating and ware.
Small fun fact about titanfall 2s double take: it does, in fact, fire three rounds during gameplay. The middle shot is not rendered in gameplay, however it does sometimes appear to glitch into existence in the killcam. Side note for the game spot guys, if you go into stats and pilot weapons, you can get a close up view of the higher poly models of the first person model. If you decide to do some more of the guns.
To the person who got the gameplay footage, I know it's too late now, but you can look a gun model fully (without the pilot taking up space) by going into your account stats.
Ronin’s shotgun is based off the the titan grenade launcher in Titanfall 1 and yes you should make the martial artists watch the Titanfall grunt fights
So the Leadwall, is i think the same or similar to the Triple threat from Titanfall 1, triple threat being a grenade launcher and the leadwall like a gauge -8 shotgun, or canister shell tank gun with what i'd assume a square cylinder. would've like to have seen coverage of more of the weapons like the Mozambique or Mastiff or some of the heavier weapons like the Thunderbolt or sidewinder. but i get you can't do all of the weapons.
Yep, that’s exactly it with the Leadwall. It’s just a reused asset from that grenade launcher. Even the aiming reticle is the same. I was looking through the comments to see if anyone did say anything about that.
15:52 The 'smart' bit is actually the Titan Core that he has in his other hand. The lore reason why it's a pistol is that it's an emergency function for if your Titan goes down you can grab its core and the pistol from a hidden compartment and escape. Also as someone else also said it's for concealment purposes as well.
Are you claiming the titan core controls the pistols aim? Unless you have some hidden knowledge I dont, the animation with you holding the titan core in your left hand is only in the campaign.
@@rreprah9515 Yes, and the campaign is the only thing that matters when talking about lore. MP is made to be a fun PvP shooter, not lore accurate representation of the setting and its technology.
@@goofy851 The Smart Pistol was in Titanfall 1 multiplayer, and Titanfall 1 multiplayer is literally canon as that's how they told the game's "campaign." So no, the targeting is not done through the Titan core. That's not even ever said in the movie, you just fan canon'd it up right now.
@@goofy851 In what world is the multiplayer not a representation of the setting and its technology? You fight in cities, industrial complexes, museums, forests, and even the simulator from the pilot gauntlet at the beginning of the campaign. Not to mention the factions being from the campaign aswell. Also the main mode, attrition, LITERALLY has fodder units like grunts and spectres and is very clearly supposed to represent the "all-out-war" scenario presented in the campaign.
The Cold War references the G11K2. You'll notice it when you look at the magazine and see that it's chambered in 4.73x33mm caseless ammunition, and also that it's generally very blocky looking, just like the G11.
In campaign, you can switch weapons as a titan. Also, Jonathan mentioned that the R series rifles should have been the SMG, but there is a smg variant of them called the R-97.
So… fun fact of Legion’s autocannon: those aren’t barrels. Those are electromagnetic rails. They rotate so that the munition pulled by them also spins. It seems like a wacky sci-fi weapon at first, but I was actually inspired by it and I’ve been working on an experimental rotary-rail cannon myself.
If I remember correctly, the Predator Cannon (space minigun) and the smart pistol are made by the same manufacturer, and the cannon has the smart technology as the pistol. Obviously, an aimbot minigun would be imbalanced, so it's limited to the titan's super, Smart core.
I hope in part 2 you include more abilities that utilize the gun in them, like Legion's smart core. Also some things I'd like to add: The smart pistol is meant as a last resort option, and optimizing that tech to such a small extent must cost a fortune. Considering that it's also used as an espionage weapon, it kinda had to retain a small size. The leadwall was originally a grenade launcher in Titanfall 1, but repurposed/modded to shoot like a shotgun
The pistol isn't the only "smart weapon" in the game actually. Technically the predator cannon is as well but only during the legion titan's ultimate ability so I'm not sure how Canon it is. Also I don't remember the exact line but I believe there is a line of dialouge that says the smart pistol is incredibly expensive to manufacture even by future standards
There is actually also a gameplay difference between the the vk-47 and v-47. The v-47 being the first one from Titanfall 2b got it's name partially because it will only recoil in a horizontal "flatline". Of course you can also say that the name is because it flatlines people but it is most likely a bit of both espeically as the way the recoil worked in Titanfall 2 did not transfer over to Apex Legends.
Also of note, I am 100% certain that the Vk-47/Flatline's top-mounted electronics/optics package was directly inspired from the futuristic 'AK-47' from the film _Elysium._ Both also extend over the Ak-style gas block at a diagonal angle to form a similar silhouette.
Fun fact: it took me a while to realize this, but the lead wall is actually a carry over from Titan fall 1. I forgot the name, but it was indeed a grenade launcher that shot 3 at a time, and they bounced around for a bit, or until they hit an enemy, then exploded. The barrel would rotate when you aim down the sights, giving it a longer range, vertical volley. There was also a mod that made the grenades mines when they hit the ground. I remembered all of this from when I was like 7, playing the first Titan fall
I love this game It is and will always be my favorite. I honestly love how scfi it is but with a lot of realism. I honestly am working on trying to bring this technology to life with the weapons and gameplay mechanics. And as a big fan of Jonathan, I really wish I could talk with him and ask him questions one firearm enthusiast to another
generally correct, except in the campaign you do pick up any weapon on the ground as a titan too (usually from a weapon reserve pile as those are guaranteed undamaged). and worth remembering the titans were there before their weapons. on the predator cannon some folks theorized that the firing happens electrical, and the small "chargeup" time before a power shot is actually a rotation of chambering before blasting from all pipes.
Small thing I’d like to add to the smart pistol, the reason not all the guns are smart from a lore perspective would be because the guided bullets it fires are waayyy too expensive to be used like that
Thumb hole stocks might actually make sense in this game as it would make it easier for you to stay held on to the gun if you're a 'Pilot' constantly jumping, gliding, and wall running
It's always a delight having Jonathan on the channel! He seems really passionate about what he does, and I love how he always tries to find some sort of real-life counterpart, no matter how outlandish a weapon may be!
So I'm not Jonathan but I will have a go at responding to your question... bipedal mechs are impractical because: 1) They stand upright and therefore are an easier target than a normal tank - harder to get "hull down" behind a hill or whatever. A mech would have to have more of itself exposed to fire in order to shoot. 2) They would need a larger volume than a tank carrying an equivalent weapon, so you'd need more weight of armour to give equivalent protection. 3) For a given weight, feet would result in a much higher ground pressure than tracks, making them more prone to bog down in soft ground. 4) Legs would need actuators/hydraulics in the legs themselves, which would be difficult to protect properly and therefore be vulnerable. So the TLDR version is that mechs probably aren't going to replace relatively normal tanks.
@@chemistrykrang8065 Titans are more built for urban combat and maneuverability. Open air battlefields aren’t what there meant for. Not to say your points are invalid, some still stand even in proper conditions, but I think titans could still have a niche.
The reason why in the campaign you can pick up other titan weapons is because BT is a vanguard class titan the only kind to be equipped with that ability, the multiplayer titans are built around their weapon for example Legion his weapon is a large minigun and because of that he's is heavily armored and has abilities built around the gun.
While it does indeed fire three projectiles, the middle one is invisible and magic so I think it's fair to consider it a two projectile weapon in lore.
the R-series of infantry weapons made by Lastimosa Armory is a very modular weapon system. It can be adapted for different roles depending on the needs on the battlefield. R-101, and R-201 are full length assault rifles, R-101c and R-201c are Carbine versions, R-97 and R-99 are SMGs for vehicle crews, the Longbow DMR which is for Designated Marksman Roles.
What really stands out to me about the smart pistol is the decidedly not blunt end. That is to say, even when out of ammo, it is still very much capable of taking out hostiles with methods besides a hard and blunt thump. Which feels fitting for an elite pilot's last resort personal weapon that has all the very best which can't be spared for other weapons in more regular use.
I’ve always seen the power shot on legion as the minigun becoming supercharged firing a short but extremely high rate of fire burst. Almost like the idea of the metal storm concept. So it seems like a singular shot or the barrels all firing at the same time but in reality it’s just a astonishingly quick burst.
The kinda hilarious thing is that the Double Take became the Triple because it already secretly fired a third shot between the two visible ones (it just wasn't obvious except at the longest ranges possible in the game) but in Apex having that not be explicit would be exponentially worse and not having the third round at all would be worse gamefeel
13:09 *Johnathan walks offscreen for a second, walks back in benching a GAU-8 Avenger 30mm Gatling Gun, says a few quips about the gun, about its installation on the Goalkeeper and A-10 etc, then walks away still carrying it and puts it down out of frame with a slight grunt from using a mere few percent of his true power*
In the lore the ammo aren’t expelled via chemical reactions but with electricity. This allows the guns to be “amped”, increasing the velocity and damage.
Missed opportunity to review the Alternator and really dive deep into the name of the gun! Glad Titanfall 2 is getting some modern recognition. To anyone that doesn't have it, come play!
I was fully expecting Jonathan Ferguson the keeper of firearms and artillery to be like "This is a 40mm tracker cannon used by mechs, AND we do actually have one here. It was used by Mr. Lastimosa, who at the time was a sergeant"
The smart pistol is actually modelled off the glock not the 2011 and just has an upgraded body kit with a charging handle and raised sights/round counter but the reason they only put the tracking on a pistol is so the pilots could keep it in their titan cores as a bit of a last stand kit
The reason why the smart pistol is a pistol is its use on the battlefield. They are super super expensive and rare so that’s why not every grunt gets one. And at that point, they are reserved for do or die situations where a pilot is stuck behind enemy lines and needs to get back. So it needs to be small enough to fit into the titan’s SERE kit along with a few magazines and a pistol has the best frame for that objective.
Titanfall is the prequal if you like to Apex legends, hence the weapon design continuity in the double take and triple take rifles. I cannot tell you how long I have been waiting for Jonathan to react to titanfall, this is brilliant.
Reloading as a titan is an aspect because titans are basically hijacking your nerve signals going to your body and instead translating to space robot movement. The people piloting those mechs are not only elite, but also extremely ligjtweight by design. They can’t afford to carry around more than they already are (a main weapon, a sidearm and often an anti-materiel weapon of some sort. It makes sense for their titans to shave some weight by forgoing an autoloader.
I am really impressed that on many guns I would call unreal or sci-fi, this dude essentially said- yeah this exists as a prototype, or yeah we have this there and ther.... wow! Makes you really wonder what is and isnt possible in the 21st century! Great episode! 🧡
Still love to hear your take on the physical projectile, rocket and missile launchers from the various Gundam series. Maybe a hyper mega particle cannon or railgun for fun?
it should have been noted that the v-47 flatline also only had horizontal recoil, similar to the vector. so one of its real-life counterparts other than the Groza would be the Chris vector as well. idk I thought of it as being cool because it's like an ak bullpup Chris vector all in one, which would be kinda of insane if ever pulled off.
which I forgot to mention but the r-101 carbine should have been the flatline because as you said it has some inspiration from the Chris vector, if it had vertical recoil it would have just made sense...
The mechs not having autoloaders is also kind of explained in lore:
The titans were originally built as farming equipment, and due to lack of resources to build dedicated war machines in the frontier, the existing titans were reworked to be weapons.
Like how tanks didn’t come into existence until after the invention of tread equipped tractors used for farming and logging

The predator cannon does not fire all barrels at once, it just temporarily increases the fire rate insanely high as seen in the legion trailer video
Certain point-defense-cannons have programable burst fire modes. It could easily be a function for the predator cannon that is limited to conserve energy and ammunition, and reduce overheating and ware.
Doesn't it state in the ingame description that it fires all barrels at the same time? I may be wrong but I remember it being the case
@@EE-one-Dnope it doesn't
Now do part 2! I don't really remember doing EPG, and its such a fun and quirky gun in its own right!
Ronin’s shotgun is based off the the titan grenade launcher in Titanfall 1 and yes you should make the martial artists watch the Titanfall grunt fights
gotta go back and get all the weapons for another episode because man all of Titanfall 2 has so much care and love put into it's details
If i remember correctly Mozambique was covered in a Apex Vid
Yep, that’s exactly it with the Leadwall. It’s just a reused asset from that grenade launcher. Even the aiming reticle is the same. I was looking through the comments to see if anyone did say anything about that.
@@therealblackl1ster110 God i hate the triple threat grenade launcher. Takes absolutly no skill to cover 25% of the map in explosives
Titanfall/Apex has some of the most rad futuristic design work in gaming weapons
In campaign, you can switch weapons as a titan. Also, Jonathan mentioned that the R series rifles should have been the SMG, but there is a smg variant of them called the R-97.
I've been waiting so long for this video. You have no idea. Thank you so much for finally doing it! Would love to see more Titanfall.
This game is slept on soooo much! One of my all time top 10 games. Loved every bit of the game, and how fun the guns were to play with.
I hope in part 2 you include more abilities that utilize the gun in them, like Legion's smart core. Also some things I'd like to add:
The smart pistol is meant as a last resort option, and optimizing that tech to such a small extent must cost a fortune. Considering that it's also used as an espionage weapon, it kinda had to retain a small size.
The leadwall was originally a grenade launcher in Titanfall 1, but repurposed/modded to shoot like a shotgun
Would be down to see a follow-up video to this one
The pistol isn't the only "smart weapon" in the game actually. Technically the predator cannon is as well but only during the legion titan's ultimate ability so I'm not sure how Canon it is. Also I don't remember the exact line but I believe there is a line of dialouge that says the smart pistol is incredibly expensive to manufacture even by future standards
I've been watching for a while and I have been fantasizing about the Titanfall guns :) I'm so glad you guys did this
There is actually also a gameplay difference between the the vk-47 and v-47.
Also of note, I am 100% certain that the Vk-47/Flatline's top-mounted electronics/optics package was directly inspired from the futuristic 'AK-47' from the film _Elysium._ Both also extend over the Ak-style gas block at a diagonal angle to form a similar silhouette.
for other weapons having the self-aiming capabilities of the smart pistol, legion's core ability grants the gatling gun smart bullets
Fun fact, the titan shotgun was originally a grenade launcher in the first titanfall game called the triple threat
I was hoping he would react to the machine pistol that fired two round burst and shunted the recoil side to side. That would have given him brain lock
Small thing I’d like to add to the smart pistol, the reason not all the guns are smart from a lore perspective would be because the guided bullets it fires are waayyy too expensive to be used like that
I think Mr Ferguson is a very joyful person with a naturally comforting energy. Very cool!
I'd love to see him react to guns in Pavlov in psvr2 etc
That smart pistol comment made us like 4 fifth element fans really happy =D
Thumb hole stocks might actually make sense in this game as it would make it easier for you to stay held on to the gun if you're a 'Pilot' constantly jumping, gliding, and wall running
It's always a delight having Jonathan on the channel! He seems really passionate about what he does, and I love how he always tries to find some sort of real-life counterpart, no matter how outlandish a weapon may be!
Mr. Ferguson, what's you take on Mechs generally? Are they fun? Impractical? Versatile?
So I'm not Jonathan but I will have a go at responding to your question... bipedal mechs are impractical because:
1) They stand upright and therefore are an easier target than a normal tank - harder to get "hull down" behind a hill or whatever.
In Titanfall 1 that Mecha shotgun actually fired large beach ball sized grenades. It's just been repurposed in the second game.
Great video. But it should be pointed out that in Titanfall 2, Double Take shoots 3 projectiles instead of 2 unlike the name suggests
it used to shoot 2 on release day and it was god awful
While it does indeed fire three projectiles, the middle one is invisible and magic so I think it's fair to consider it a two projectile weapon in lore.
Interesting observation on the Leadwall, seeing as the design was taken from the Triple Threat grenade/mine launcher from TF1.
Sad EA pulled the plug ;(

the R-series of infantry weapons made by Lastimosa Armory is a very modular weapon system.
I would love to see Johnathan break down the guns of Killzone 2/3 or Killzone Shadowfall
Killzone and titanfall really have the coolest weapons of any games imo

What really stands out to me about the smart pistol is the decidedly not blunt end. That is to say, even when out of ammo, it is still very much capable of taking out hostiles with methods besides a hard and blunt thump. Which feels fitting for an elite pilot's last resort personal weapon that has all the very best which can't be spared for other weapons in more regular use.
I think we could use another dive into Payday 2 because it's just so expansive.
Gotta have him take a look at the Titanfall 1 guns, especially the Kraber and Spitfire
Would be interested in a video looking at the guns of the Deus Ex games, there's some interesting sci-fi designs through the series.
Order 1886 next. The steampunk guns are often very interesting
Please react to the rest of RE4 guns, including the reloads, especially the rifle reload, since the remake is about to come.
Best thing on Saturday since 1980’s Saturday morning cartoons
I'd love to see his thoughts on Cod Zombies wonder weapons
I’ve always seen the power shot on legion as the minigun becoming supercharged firing a short but extremely high rate of fire burst. Almost like the idea of the metal storm concept. So it seems like a singular shot or the barrels all firing at the same time but in reality it’s just a astonishingly quick burst.
Yo that's my game
I hope we get part two eventually.
Yes infact, titanfall 2 is the better predecessor to apex legends, the two take place in the same universe
Well, technically Apex is a spin-off, not a successor.
@@The_Keeper. Except it basically killed off Titanfall 3, so it's arguably NOT a spinoff.
"I suppose it's more like wall running John Wick"
Literally the perfect description for a Pilot. 🤣
In the lore the ammo aren’t expelled via chemical reactions but with electricity. This allows the guns to be “amped”, increasing the velocity and damage.
Never have I YEETED my soul into watching a video as fast as this
Amazing people still talking about titanfall 2, loved the video.
7:30 The Titan fall 2 flatline has an interesting quirk where it ONLY Has a horizontal recoil while aiming down creating a “Flat Line” recoil pattern
Since Titanfall 2 is having a resurgence, I really want a part 2 of this video. :D
Titanfall 2 is my favorite game, so happy that you could review it!!!!
Canonically the titans were industrial equipment that only relatively recently started becoming combat vehicles. Iirc
The EM in EM-4 stands for Electromagnetic and the 4 for its burst of 4 "grenades" iirc
God, seeing footage of Titanfall 2 makes me so sad there likely will never be a sequel, at least not for a long long time. 😭
Same here
Reloading as a titan is an aspect because titans are basically hijacking your nerve signals going to your body and instead translating to space robot movement.
The people piloting those mechs are not only elite, but also extremely ligjtweight by design. They can’t afford to carry around more than they already are (a main weapon, a sidearm and often an anti-materiel weapon of some sort. It makes sense for their titans to shave some weight by forgoing an autoloader.
The predator cannons special is the fire rate going up by a really high amount for one burst, essentislly like a burst fire mode on a rifle.
I am really impressed that on many guns I would call unreal or sci-fi, this dude essentially said- yeah this exists as a prototype, or yeah we have this there and ther.... wow! Makes you really wonder what is and isnt possible in the 21st century! Great episode! 🧡
The Star Trek shirt made me insanely happy. Great vid as always
One cool detail is if you l at design descriptions for the pilot weapons, a majority of the weapons use the same caliber, 6.19mm.
I think MGL stands for Magnetic Grenade Launcher since the grenades you shoot sorta magnet to the titans
Thank you, Jonathan. I have been waiting for this for years. Titanfall 1 and 2 and our little community deserve it.
