- The Venetian Republic was one of the most powerful maritimie republic ever established in Italy, helding its power from the city of Venice.
Founded in 421, see the History of this Republic from the date it gained independance from the Eastern Roman Empire in 697 until 1797 when it was abolished by Napoleon, passing through the period within it established its complete hegemony over the Mediterranean.

The funny part to me is that it's technically one of the longest running republics to ever exist (although it's legitimacy as a true representation of the people is debatable, to say the least). To say that a nation existed as an independent political unit outside of major imperial capital regions for a thousand years is something truly of note.
Yeah, right. No wonder Venetian separatists almost managed to stage an armed coup in 2014 (!) to restore the Venetian Republic once again.
it's representation of the people is not under debate, Venice was not a democracy and it never pretended to be one. "Republic" is not a synonym with "democracy".
@@Drobexxx Keep in mind that the founding fathers of America never intended for everyone to be able to vote. In their idea of democracy only a few would be allowed to vote and those few were of course wealthy and educated. The idea that everyone would be allowed to vote would be considered total insanity for them. Even in Athens where democracy came to be it wasn't like that. You had to complete military training to be able to vote in Ancient Athens, later this kind of training would also include philosophical and literary studies and only the wealthy would take it. Democracy like it is today would be seen as a joke and no one would dare to propose it and if someone did people would probably think the person had some kind of mental illness.

I find it very based from Greece, gave us architecture and protection from Ottomans.
Truly the most Serene of Doges.
Venice left a strong influence in southern Greece and Greek islands:
1) 890 words. Greek language has 2.500-3000 Italian words (the most words coming from a foreign language), 890 of them being venetian
2) great influence in architecture. If you ever visit nafplio, monemvasia, preveza, Chania mesolonghi, corfu etc you will see what i am talking about
3) cuisine: Greece is the only country second to Italy with a heavy native pasta tradition, meanwhile Greece has the second heaviest pasta consumption in the world after Italy itself. If course that is not visible in touristic areas and thats because people associate pasta with Italy only, so Greece never promoted its traditional pasta.
4) music: major influences can be found in the ionian islands, but minor also in Crete and aegean music, as well as in western Peloponnese
i am greek and you are absolutely right (only one comment about pasta. a kind of a similar to todays pasta was used already in the ancient greeks after the funeral of a person)
🇮🇹❤🇬🇷
In every greek reastaurant in Germany, where I live, you get Pasta. And you are right, greek pasta is very good.
What does “native pasta tradition” mean? If it means using pasta in it’s dishes, most of the Mediterranean has some, well at least in the european part
U fking bastards suck us at 1204.we greeks were the richest country until you betrayed us.u stole 1million coins for fk shake you melt all bronze statues that there from ancient greece.and you let us poor so ottomans destroyed us and conquered us for 350 years you are the reason for our poverty nad misery.1204 was our end.we had the best civilization and you were nothing.we forced to steal traditions so to survive.fking italians
I didn't quite realize how many of the Aegean islands Venice actually controlled, and for so long. It's incredible Venice held Crete until the mid-1600s.
İt took a decades long siege by the Ottomans for them to Lose it and it was a close call too, it was possibly one of the longest sieges in the world.
And also cyprus FOR a lot
And only lost it because of some french frog eaters
Actually, as a venetian motherlanguage, the correct name is "Repùblega de Venèçia" or "Repùblega Vèneta"

Once Venice was the master of the seas.
In 1038 Saint Stephen of Hungary died. His sister was the wife of the Doge of Venice, and Stephen named her son Peter Orseolo as his heir (since his own sons had died before him). Therefore the second king of Hungary was actually half Venetian. Peter had a hard time reigning, he was probably killed in 1046. He was buried in the cathedral of Pécs, however the location of his grave is unknown.
I love the fact that you didn't use Italian but the real language of that land, Venetian!
Bro Venetian is litteraly a regional dialect of Italy
@@BlazingFlame69 No. It is a language with it's own grammar and pronounciation, literature and history. Italian is the language that was used by the high elite and the poets since 1861, when it became the official language, and only around 1960 everyone started speaking it fluently
@@pnkcnlng228It can't be called its own language
@@BlazingFlame69 (i'm italian so i know what i'm saying) there is a big difference between language and dialect. lot of italian dialects are actually languages with their own grammar, lexicon and pronunciation (a famous example is the sardinian language). although now what they speak in venice is more a dialect than a language, from the middleages to the unification of italy they spoke the venetian language there
(we also need to remember that italian is actually a dialect, the florence dialect that Dante used to write the Divina Commedia in the 1300, so it's kind of stupid to call a language that exists since the fall of the roman empire (kinda) the dialect of another dialect which was born centuries later)
@@tsarulfhednar5691 Venetian is not a language only because Italian is the official one. Venetian isn't standardized yet but it isn't a dialect of Italian.

One of my favourite empires.
Which Empire dude?
Your favourite Republic you should say.
@@gonzalomarquez8264 republics can be empires
@@HassanHassan-ux9cwdon’t let yourself be fooled by the “small” dimensions. Other empires are shown big on a map because they make a giant red blob near cities the empire control but are mostly empty area. Venice with just controlling those islands, the Italian region, and Costantinople had an urban population on par if not superior than Uk or France. The latters just had lots of farmers too outside the towns. But literally think about Uk look how much pop London had at the time, look at all the other “big cities” (there were none) and than watch all the Urban population or Venice Republic and it’s basically the same if not Venice has even more than the whole Uk

The most beautiful city in modern times: Venezia. You can't erase 1000 years of history of sovereign state. Its legacy is its identity.
Why Venice had such strange territory and borders
Because they did like the Portoguese, wanting to expand commerce and not having enough manpower to take a lot of land they sniped important commercial nodes. They tried to expand more organically both in Italy and balkans-greece but where stopped by bigger states or coalitions, they where monsters at sea, not at land
GLORIA A LA MEA REPUBLICA DE VENEXIA!
Potremo in alto el nome de San Marco e la nostra amata Republica.
Viva Venezia e viva Italia!
I am proud that my roots are in this deep culture, I am ashamed to see britons, uncultured, racist, ignorant comments... This Republic had the dominion on the Adriatic sea ans on the eastern Mediterranean sea for about 7centuries... And you don't understand this,.. Your influence on Greece, Cyprus, your ship cruises to Israel, are traced and stabilized by this Republic.. Arabic people call Adriatic sea, the venetian gulf, byndikiratt,.... All our history d be totally different without the Serenissima... An example of really democracy and tolerance, lingua franca.. U know what I mean? Well, venetian was lingua franca from Venice, to all eastern coast of Adriatic sea, actual, ehm slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, even Albania, to Greek Islands of Zante, zakintos, creta, kriti, Cyprus and to holy Jerusalem.... Actual languages preserves words, grammatical expression of venetian, dishes are so, buzara, kaperi, briziola.. Ask local people even today.... And Othello, was colored, he was a, leader of venetian ship powerfull flotilla, yes d
they didn't look at your origin and race, but about your attitude,... Culture of Serenissima is still alive and preserved, particularly in Istria and Dalmatia, for centuries under venetian control... About Dubrovnik, Ragusa, yes it was indipendent, but culture, language, trade, life was under the power and illuminate leadership of its mother, Venice..... Slavian, I am among these, preserved this culture, even is history, napoleon, Austria, Yugoslavia, destroyed all possible Lyons of Saint Marco...
Look at this from koper, to all Istria and Dalmatia far from Greece, trough Albania and Montenegro.... In every city on the Sea 🌊 you look at, you ll see fortifications remained and, when not totally destroyed, there is Saint Marco Lyon with a book, opened while peace period, closed when war troubles occurred. For the teachers that see all this only a sea tale, remember that Venezia conquered territory far up to Milan perifer area,... Southern to actual central Italy.. And, please Marco Polo , was venetian, first real, deep approach to Chinese culture, was his life..... Now tell me about Luxembourg or Kosovo... By the way striga is one of the words autoctone in this land... I heard and smile about this, good culture to everyone ❤️🤗👍
