So thankful to those in SA who kept this beautiful man’s music alive.. What an inspirational story and such a beautiful soul. Thank you 🇿🇦 blessed be Sixto ❤️💔❤️💔❤️
Interesting story about Rodriquez's tour in South Africa. I was living in Pretoria on a one year detail at the time of his concerts including the huge stadium concert in Johannesburg and my good friend, Ian Edelstein, asked me if I wanted to go see Rodriquez, the legend. I told him I was very familiar with almost any American act in rock but never heard of the guy. Ian was incredulous and could not believe that I had never heard of him in the U.S. Needless to say I did not go to the concert and it was not until the documentary came out a few years ago that I even knew this was the singer/songwriter that my friend was talking about! After watching the documentary, I just fell in love with the man, his music, his impact and the timeliness of his songs. And, to think that I could have actually seen in during this incredible period of his "rebirth". Ian, wherever you are my friend, I blew that one!! You were right all along....the guy is a super legend!
Well, I just found out about this documentary flying back home from Sweden on a United flight August 19th 2023, 11 days after his death. Now I am obsessed 😊
Sixto Rodriguez spent 30 years of back-breaking hard work in construction and living in poverty, but look at him now, listen to it! Bam - fits place for musicians like Dylan or Springsteen, easily you wouldn't believe it, but he was ignored by the Media in the seventies, only because for his Latin origin, although he was not a prophet in his own land, his songs were the voice of inspiration in South Africa, giving freedom to a captive people and that's why that he still a Sugarman Documentaries like looking for SugarMan and a band called death is making me wonder how many great bands were stolen and never be remembered, He won a new world, but his own country lost to enjoy this such amazing talent during all these years
I had the honor to see him perform in SA in 1998 and in 2018 I went to Detroit to look for Rodriguez. He was on a tour apparently (Canada) and I spoke with the guy at the pizza restaurant where he always have pizza. Went past his house and also past the house of Sugerman, the drugdealer. Wonderful memories and wonderful music.
I watched the documentary about a great, humble, artist Sixto Rodriguez, I thank you so Here, in France, we don't know how much this great singer was in part for the end of the apartheid and so loved !!! Thank you !!!
Rodriguez was so cool and humble. A pure working class Chicano from Motown. A true working man from our nation's decaying cities and a true artist who made art no matter his circumstances. It was such a great documentary and such a great story. I was fascinated by how his songs were the soundtrack for the white anti racist Afrikaners who fought apartheid, who protested in the colleges and universities against the inhumanity of apartheid and how the Peoria government banned his songs and people bootleged copies. It shows us why Madiba wanted unity with white south Africans because he knew a lot of whites and Indians fought alongside blacks and were imprisoned as well. There is a lot of history in the film and it explains why this music caught on with the anti racist Afrikaners in cape town and jo burg. So proud of this fellow Latino. A great ambassador for the north american working man.
He caught on with both Afrikaner and “English” South Africans. His and Johnny Clegg’s stories are two of the greatest stories in all of music. They showed the power of music to motivate and mobilize people and to change hearts.
This song was anthem growing up - Cold Fact was such an amazing album, EVERYBODY had a copy. I was at the concert in Cape Town - we weren't quite sure if it was actually him, because we had always "known" that he was dead - the stories were part of the legend that was and is the album COLD FACT!
Absolutely, Greg. Not only was he ripped off but the public was. At least twenty of the best years of his life he was out bustin his ass to make a living unfortunately leaving his music on the sidelines . I know three kids that must be very proud no matter what the future brings . I hope he becomes Iconic like many other great artists!!!!!!!!!!!
this man is a legend, there are people who criticize him because I did not win others question their live performances, which is what it quye expresses what I found in the bob dilan never found in, this is the real man ...
The irony that while it was probably racism that kept him from success in the States, it was in that most racist of all countries (South Africa in the 70's and 80's) that his name was kept alive. A testament to the power of music and that things are not always what they seem on the surface
These guys were his best back up band by far. I am unsure why he doesn't use them for his current and other past tours. That is maybe the one question I'd ask Rodriguez if I was to meet him....thanks for your post!
I wish i grew up in the times where there were only hands up in the air moving to the music, clapping and cheering instead of hands in the air full of phone's recording. I was just barely too late to enjoy it. :(
It is a shame that the establishment with racist people behind the scenes have tried to bury this man talents. But this is the story of Job into the life of Sixto Rodriguez.
Bullshit. Santana mad it ok. A black man named Clarence avant stole Rodriguez's money. If Rodriguez got the money from album sales, he would have made more music. Go and shoot Avant.
@@Deontjie It's easy to just blame racism when someone gets treated unfairly. Seems to be the trend now. It's a cop out for people with an inferiority complex . To blame racism exclusively is underestimating the American music fan. It's a cop out, an easy explanation for simple minded , clueless people
The document was one of the best I’ve ever seen I saw it on CBC well before it was popular keep up the great work on getting these awesome docs go public tv don trump and Steve Harper don’t like it reason enough to like
the best story and that happened to any musician, ever...
Man, I'm in South Africa, he was a major part of my music youth,
Sad day!
Hasta siempre, hombre de azúcar, de México para el mundo tu talento🌎

Many bands...many, many great songwriters/singers...something i'm all too aware of.
if his songs were a voice of inspiration..."giving freedom" to a captive people.Where are black people? all I see is whites. real question.
@@hasanx4637 It's in South Africa my dude
its good to see that racism has not plagued SA as it has USA
It's amazing the emotion this very short song provokes.
Shoutout to our South African 🇿🇦 Brothers and sisters... U guys kept his music alive and gave his incredible music to the world

No cabe duda que no siempre se es profeta en su propia tierra, en Sudáfrica se saben sus canciones, es una estrella incluso de muchos jóvenes!
We South Africans adore you
Bob Dylan is OK but Sixto Rodriguez is the KING !
bad company
I can understand his lyrics as he sings
Always been a fan of Dylan's but since I discovered Rodriguez I say Dylan has nothing on him!
His story is awesome man........
A man without honor in his own country -- finds it in a country who needed him more.

+stanvarana he is one of the few pure artists out there. famous at least. you know those kinds that really kept their soul.
