    She's so beautiful, so talented, so skilled at her instrument, such a beautiful singing voice. Very few Candy Dulfers extant in any one lifetime.

    I got to see her live in person about five years ago now when she was touring the US with Dave Koz. Honestly, she is an amazing sax player, she is unbelievably pretty, and she has a stage presence that is like a rock star. I fell in love almost instantly.

    Such big sounds come from that small frame. I love the sax as an instrument, it conveys the spirit of the player as if they were singing. Well done Candy, thank you👏👏👏💖

    The first time I heard(saw) this woman play was on MTV in the 80's. Lily was Here was the track and her playing the sax was just mind blowing. The tone, the intonation, the swing of smooth jazz mixed with a pop back rhythm. She was so great at such a young age then. She is still leading, way ahead at the forefront of saxophone.

    Excellent! Love her sound. Interestingly and way before this video was released, I bought my alto from Amsterdam Winds (approx 4 years ago). I don't believe they had their 'Free Wind' brand available back then but hey, for such a small, intimate outfit as Amsterdam Winds was back then, I came away a very happy man with my Raw, Unacquered Mauriat Alto complete with Fred LeBayle Metal Jazz chamber mouthpiece. Great people to do business with!! I would/may well go back there when I'm thinking of upgrading however, I'm finding my alto is such an easy sax to play and my LeBayle provides a tone not too dissimilar from Candy Dulfers. I'm a happy man, not looking to upgrade at this time! :D

    Everyone always has Selmer blinders on because you've never played or really listened to other options. Go to the Mid-West Clinic or NAMM, play other manufacturers and discover what's out there. Respect to the Mark VI, but the price you pay when you can find one...there are other brand new less expensive options from other manufacturers that have come up with new & better designs and sounds. Ernie Watts (has videos on youtube about what he plays and why), Liebman (designed his own horn with Keilwerth), Mintzer (videos of him of what he switched to and why), Carter (plays everything mostly Conn and P.Mauriat). Most of these guys are at these shows/conventions, talk to them why they don't use their Mark VI's anymore. There are so many amazing options out there, play the instrument yourself, they are all at these conventions. You'd be amazed at what's available.

    Her Selmer Mk6 has an upper harmonic partials palette that the horn here doesn’t have. It sounds like a Yamaha which is a fine horn but also lacks that upper overtone palette that vintage Selmer’s have. I own an alto and tenor from both makers and have performed and recorded on both and have gone nuts comparing the two. I love the Yamaha’s because they are modern and simple to adjust, are powerful and have great intonation. But I keep returning to the Selmer’s because my ear just needs that rich overtone palette. I tried various necks and mouthpieces on the Yamaha to try and replicate the Selmer but have failed. I think Candy might not be aware of what’s missing. She plays wonderfully.

    THAT is one really great smooth sounding sax.
    I have been buying a few old Alto's, and a C melody, from the old Elkhart Indiana days - SOME of the tone is great yet they have so many quirks, honks in the low notes and clanks. Lots of room for improvement - it is great to see someone has taken on the challenge laid down so long ago.
    Do you add the corrosion I see, or is that extra?

    This video was made 4 years ago... Candy is one my favorites, she sounds even better now
    days... as if she needed to improve from 4 years ago BUT I have a question, what mouthpiece and reed strength was she using in this video,,, the reed sounded a little to
    hard, probably an eight but I am guessing. Original question, what was this mouthpiece.
    Thanks.

    • @henrymelbourne2265
      @henrymelbourne2265 6 років тому +2

      John Packer instruments can have pretty low quality mechanisms, but if you look after it (i.e make sure all the screws/pads aren't slipping, and don't knock or put the instrument down heavily) then it will serve you well for a few years. Intonation on them can be challenging too! If you have a local teacher then they should be able to put you in touch with woodwind repairman/workshop who will sort you out with good second hand instruments which is a better option usually to cheap internet bought instruments.
