John is probably the most well written protagonist I've ever seen. From hero to antihero to villain to hero again. Uru chan did his character so well. We loved him and hated him at the same time.
I know right. But the only reason I hated john was when he threatened his father. Everything else in my eyes was justice

@Partapbejai. Yeh in webtoon his character has the greatest development of a protagonist. Even though john is not the strongest webtoon character he is by far my favourite it terms of character change and personality
To be honest john gave me light yagami vibes. A protagonist I love the most in all history. Light yagami is the best. But john he definitely is one of my favourites. He got a redemption he deserves.
he's not the most well written imo but he's definitely above most webtoon/shonen.
Many people were frustrated and over John’s negative spiral but I feel like that kind of downplays John’s struggle. the thing is there was always going to be someone like him, a weaker individual who gets stronger and gets a taste of real power. John’s ability literally is to get payback on people but despite all that he was treated terribly regardless of what tier he was in. That combined with his re-education that everything was his fault and is there really any wonder why he went crazy? Not saying what he did was right but he does bring up plenty of great points that the other wellston royals eventually agree with
And to STILL be able to try again after all that is kinda incredible tbh

I love John’s character. Even as a John stan, his actions did leave a bad taste in my mouth. But I kinda realized, tho his actions aren’t good, they’re all very understandable. He was at the bottom and was bullied, he harbored an immense hate for everyone who hurt him. He got a taste of power and just wanted to hurt everyone around him. He became power hungry and just a sucky person, the people he hated. Kids like John need actual help to learn to use their powers responsibly. It sucks that he had to accept that he’d never be treated equally. No one should ever accept those terrible circumstances. And when he became a threat, the authorities decided to break him. Reliving your worst memory everyday would make any person, no matter how strong go insane. He hated himself and what he became. And even when he started to atoned for his actions by helping people and just being nice, he was punished. You get a taste of power, and go crazy, you lose. Your powerless and nice, you still lose. Which makes sense why he saw things so black and white. You use your powers you hurt someone, which is what he was conditioned to believe.You can’t blame him for his emotions. They’re conflicting and hard to process. When he did something, he had a reason behind it. With Claire, its because she betrayed him and knew that he’d become the most powerful. But when you realize that it was a misunderstanding, and it caused you to have trust issues and pain, it was all for nothing.
Too often we demonize people for what little we see of them and put them in one dimensional boxes. I'm so glad Uru chan made such compelling characters like John, Seraphina, Arlo, Blyke and Isen.
Personally don’t you guys think if John haven’t act the way he did to the students, none of the royals would have gotten character development 😭
Some people just need to be violently shown that their way of doing things is wrong.

Dude John reminds me of my former friend. Both of us were bullied but she was bullied for so much longer and crueler. She was bullied since Kindergarten all the way to high school which made her suicidal. The adults around didn’t do anything about it and she had terrible therapists and so she doesn’t listen to adults because they failed her. She believes John is 100% justified because she was in his situation

I still believe John was never a bad person (yeah he does a lot of bad things and it’s not excusing his behaviour but) he was a victim of society, if society never treated cripples so badly then John would never had a reason to be angry in the first place and that could of led him to use his powers more wisely in fact he probably would of become a hero because his father is such a good person and raised him well, if the reformation classes weren’t as inhuman and messed up as they were and instead were actually done properly and was able to help John learn then he would of entered school as John the powerful copy cat joker instead of John the boy so afraid of himself that he’d rather hide his powers and be treated badly again like before just to stop himself because he is scared to become a “monster” again
John never learned self control and that’s his biggest problem, his anger is definitely a big problem but as someone with anger issues I can tell you it’s not the anger that needs to go away as that can sometimes be nearly impossible it’s how you are able to handle said anger
I love the series and want to re-read it from the begining to appreciate how everyone has grown and changed, but I have such a hard time getting into it. We start by seeing the world thru John's eyes and hearing his thoughts and he never says he needs to suppress his powers or control his powers or even that he refuses to use them, he says he's POWERLESS, he has NO ability and that's just not true. As the story progresses we realize he DOES have abilities he's choosing not to use, and they're probably powerful, but by then we've moved past his inner thoughts of not having an ability so when he starts using them we're all cheering him on. It's just those initial chapters where his INNER THOUGHTS are that he truly has no powers are so removed from reality that I have trouble getting back into the story at the beginning.
I personally relate to being an angry person at times. Not to that extent like John, but I've come close. I've choked, I've threatened, and I've tossed people around. I have broken many things. I have known for years the temper I have, that most likely comes from my father and ADHD. Age 15 made it worse and I was just a terrible person at times. Just so angry for this reason or that. Had a random crying fit after one instance. My mom held me telling me that I needed it. God has helped me a lot with my anger. It's still there, but he gave me the breaks. I can also see John from all sides. He had every reason to want to get back at people, then he got that wish, then he had no reason to turn so evil, but then Keon (piece of crap) damaged him more mentally when he already was messed up and traumatized after his own actions. That factor is one I don't hear many people include when a person bullies others. You can be traumatized for doing bad things. Like when John slapped Remi after she saw him drop his papers. He tried to explain and got punished for it. Then when Blyke tried to do better, John trusts no one. Understandable for both parties, but I want John and Blyke to become buddies. Anyway Trauma is trauma and John is a character that deserves that understanding. I've befriended bullies after they messed with me, even one who once threatened to toss me up and down a staircase. Deep down they realized they had anger issues and more and didn't know what to do. Yes they made bad choices, but that doesn't mean they can't change. John changed into a fake persona because of Keon and his own actions. I like the new season where he's doing good things but still being himself. Also, his anger while stemming from abuse as a kid, seems to have always been there. No he wasn't ways wailing on other people, but you could tell his anger was always under the surface. I wonder why. Was it beat into him by people or is this a pathological thing? He seems like an IED sufferer. I could be wrong, but his impulse control issues and extreme remorse fit to an extent. I'm curious if Uru-chan will elaborate on that.
crazy, I always tell myself I cant read unordinary anymore because its hard to watch John turn into this and right when I got to that part I also began a tough part in my life. I still am its ongoing and its probably going to last years. When I stopped reading unordinary I was in a state of mind where I was trying to justify myself. Just like you said with John, I knew I was in the wrong but I would cling to one thing, one single thing to say this is why I spiraled out of control. Every time I read unordinary once it started escalating I would shiver without feeling cold because subconsciously I knew how similar I was to John emotionally. I'm in the right state of mind now. The gray area. Still going through some tough stuff but My state of mind has really helped me out. With my relationships with the people around me as well as the relationship between me and myself.
P.S I'm not going to explain the situation I'm in certainly not on the internet.
The unfortunate thing that gets overlooked a lot is that Claire... she could see into the future. She taught John how to use his own powers. Powers he didn't know he had until her. She was the match that lit the fuse. Was she to blame for everything that came after? No, I don't think so... but too many people ignore the fact that she was the beginning. Or try to forget that, at least.
I wonder if John whole trust issue and angrier at the world is also because his mom disappeared because a while back (can’t remember where but I think when Claire was talking about NB John) it was mention that John was always liked that even when he didn’t had an ability.
Maybe because she disappeared and didn’t came back he has this resentment towards her. Wondering why did she leave him and William.
Idk maybe I’m thinking to much but that’s a theory I have

I understand and love him..but sometimes.. i can't justify his actions..
Same goes with Arlo..
I am both Arlo and John team..
💜And there are times I hate their actions.
But the end of the day..i know why they did it..and i hope for them to get better

This is a theory I have about John. Anyone else notice that fact his ability is called aura manipulation when how he uses it like aura mimicry. So would It be possible not not just copy others auras but mess with them too. Like suppressing others aura so they can't use there powers?
I'm responding a little late but I agree with you, in part. I think this is something that someone we meet in the future will be able to do, but not John. Let me explain.
We already know (I hope I'm not spoiling anything) that the authorities, and therefore EMBER are experimenting on John's mother. Okay. John's ability is to copy and AMPLIFY abilities. Just like EMBER's drug. And yes I also think they can copy abilities but that would take too long to explain here, anyway.
What can Spectre do? Disable and dampen abilities. That could be someone's ability, right ? It sounds like the opposite of John's ability, actually. Deprive others of their ability, or reduce it. So I really think Spectre is experimenting too, but on someone else.
That's my theory. I wrote a lot but it was worth it !

Though I would assume even in dampened state his ability is still stronger than the original if theyre both weaken

@@averagefilipinodude2137 personally, i believe that the dampeners weaken aura, while the disabler closes aura channels. But john can willingly open his channels, so he wouldn't be effected by the disabler, but still the dampener.

And you never know, what if john's barrier only broke because he copied arlo's nerfed barrier not because he was affected by the dampener

I lire how the author tell the story, i don't see John as the main villain... in Wellstone even the Royal are not so good. I think both party are understable for how they act... maybe the change was so easy and fast that makes John think they only acts!

It also kinda relates to the royals. Everyone kinda had a reason. Arlo was conditioned by the authorities (blonde haired aunt lady who I HATE) to follow order. He was so fixated on this one thing which caused him to do the things he did to John. Not justified, still sucky, but you can understand. Kinda like John, still sucky, but you can definitely understand. It’s not black and white because no one is bad nor good here. Everyone is just humans learning to evolve and change. It all come down to society in general. It’s what has caused all this crap and emotional and physical pain to occur. Which is the biggest influence in this whole series.

I really loved this story because I related with John a lot more than most characters. The things he does are evil and he deserves to be punished for them. But the person who can punish him the most for them is himself. No hatred and actions of others will compare to that inner anguish he feels. I think it's well written because objectively the correct thing to do in his place seems apparent, but when you find yourself in those kinds of situations the pain and circumstances can take over so easily.
i honestly would love to hear about or from someone with experience in disability studies about the use of the word "cripple" in unordinary, as based on my admittedly shallow understanding, its a bit similar to the word queer in terms of reclamation in "queer crip" studies and that is generally considered to at the very least be an insensitive word. given its use in the comic, it seems like an appropriate use in a way because it showcases just how dehumanized and mistreated people without abilities are.
Just caught up go the webtoon and things got crazy. One interesting mod series finale.

This video is an amazing analysis of John. I have recently gotten into unordinary and this pretty much sums it up, however, I feel like there is one factor you didn't address that changes John from a clear monstrous villain who could have stopped to one that was directly pushed into the role with little to no chance of escape: John's conditioning (there really is no other way to describe it) at the hands of Keon. That conditioning was meant for no other purpose than to break John of his ability to use his power without being a monster as well as stripped him of the ability to reach out and get help. There is now a mental wall between John and his ability to use his powers, and John is unable to use or even talk about his powers out of fear of being a monster. The first few instances he uses his power are only of severe anger and desperation, because of Arlo and EMBER. And, after that, the only people who know are people who are too afraid of him to reach out and show him that he can use his powers in a different way, so he falls into the anger and violence.
It’s funny how it’s said many times that the powers don’t always boost your defence stuff but most the people who john attacked should have died tbh

There's not enough info yet. That'll have to be a few weeks down the line at least. But I want to see it to.
I would like to throw in that in ch 39 Sera was told to be prepared for an interview for a job at NXGen because her dad is business partners with them. So in other world her dad probably knows about what is happening to Johns mom. But that’s my speculation.

I believe the theory going around is that if John's mom has an ability similar to John's aura manipulation, that NXGen is using her to make the ability modifier drugs.

Right John is an amazing character who has Trauma from his past and has also been bullied for a long time which must of have had made him angry to once feel powerless to do anything but then you get a power that can change everything

You know this reminds me of Yoh Asakura in Shaman King 0 when we see You being bullied at school and hated humans like Hao at one point. Hence why at the time he did not want to be Shaman King at that time because he knows he would of used that power to kill humans. like in one scene Yoh gets pissed at a bully and uses His Shikigami to scratch him.

I haven't read this story, but it sounds like the powers that be didn't mind people attacking a cripple, but instead went after someone that could hurt normal people. Thats pretty messed up if thats the case.
One would think using super powers against a cripple would be taken more seriously than a fight amongst equals, unless that society really is rotten to the core. Maybe they aren't "ALL" monsters, but it feels like that society is full of monsters. Otherwise beating a cripple would have been taken more seriously by legally, and socially holding his tormentors accountable.

Gonna be real here I'm not a huge fan of this video. I feel that a lot of what you are saying misses what's actually written. Let's start with your concluding point that "the world isn't black or white and we shouldn't pick sides." Except this completely skips how John was consistently written to do worse than evil acts throughout season 2. Rather than a natural tragedy, it feels more like forced writing because the vast majority of fans supported John over the royals. You can't have it both ways, you can't say the series is trying to be nuanced but also write John to be the two-dimensional villain in both his past and present.
I also think you are glorifying the royals to a ridiculous extent. None of the royals genuinely regret their actions, at best they view them as a kind of bad thing that they shouldn't do. When only one character is consistently regretful of their actions it's kind of hard to sympathize with anyone else. Arlo doesn't actually care about ambushing John beyond the consequence that John is more powerful than him. Hell, he left Ventus and Meili to rot at school. It's not the fans that are treating the series as black or white, it's the author consistently showing us black or white characters with no in between. The issue is so bad that the view attempts that the series tries to show us comes off as hypocritical and vain. It's also why I don't understand how you thought Arlo calling out John was some sort of epic moment when it's more just Arlo looking like a completely clown.
William is honestly a crappy father, ditching John for months on end aside, what he tries to instill in John is completely dismissive of John's actual feelings. It's to the point where I wonder if he even understands that getting beaten bloody everyday will give people problems. For example with the whole thugs intimidating Adrion. By holding back, all John did was make them extra mad and more likely to come back with more friends and beat the shit out of Adrion and his mom. Do I think the series will do that? No. Simply because this series has a tendency to pull the plot through regardless of any logic or reasoning.
Sorry if this comment comes off a bit harsh. This video just feels so different from what's actually in the story and I feel like you are under the impression that this was all intentionally planned out by Uru-chan and not just poor writing at times. Maybe you feel that this is the overall lesson we are supposed to take, and judging by Uru-chan's interviews it seems to be the case. But what's actually written in the story is a completely different picture. Those are just my thoughts and sorry if they aren't articulated well, I hope I got the gist of things across in this comment.
