A masterpiece of a song. And an extraordinary production and concert from the musicians who shared this with us. This song deserves to be played throughout the ages. Good vibrations to all people involved in this.
Made me cry, so beautiful, always one of my favorites from Ian. Makes me wistful and teary eyed for my lost youth, 55 years ago, since I first heard it...
What a beutiful song to listen to on a day when we sadly lost a family member back in our homeland of Scotland. Excellent rendition. Thank you from Canada.
Thank you and my sincere condolences. Visited Scotland for the first time last year and it's a marvelous place. I had a splash of Laphroaig last evening as a matter of fact. Cheers to you.
1000 mercis de Grenoble (France)!! These songs are a tresor even when we can't really understand the meaning. It's a pleasure to ear you singing them. Thanks a lot for your vidéos
Being just a barely intermediate level player, I’ve always wondered about the guitar parts of this tune. Obviously totally faithful to the record. Beautiful. Thank you so much.
A tremendous version of a song I've revered since Ian first published it. Thank you so much for keeping it alive with such feeling. Awesome sounding Martin !!
I'm all out of superlatives for you, snoozedoctor. I just don't have high enough platitudes for what you do. But thank you for sharing this and everything else. You are definitely a giver and you have taught me so much, I can't believe it. I simply can't believe I'm learning to play these songs. You are a fantastic player and teacher!
@@snoozedoctor I thought that your vocal was wonderful, and I've been a music lover for all of my 69 years. I love all kinds of music, and I thoroughly enjoyed your performance here. All the best to you in the future!
Well Done Lad !!!!! Great cover of one of my favorite Jethro Tull tunes. Truly a beautiful and haunting melody, I've got to learn this! Thanks for posting !
OK, I have been a big fan of Jethro Tull since about 1978. I am embarrassed to say that I have never heard this song. Just listened to your version and the version on stand up. Absolutely beautiful song. Your performance is simply tremendous. Right in my vocal range so I plan to learn it also. Thanks!
Love the original but you did a spectacular job on this. I'll have to investigate the Fishman Triple Play. Obviously a modeling unit with programmed sounds of some sort.
Thanks for listening! The TriplePlay is a midi controller. The programmed sounds are samples on the computer. In the past I've used the Roland system for midi guitar and that was always plagued with latency. Because it's wireless, the TriplePlay has almost no latency, so one can play easily in time with the music. I've seen some new models of guitars are shipping with the TriplePlay already installed.
Excellent. As a lifelong Tull fan I’ve actually only recently discovered this one having focused on the stuff from 74/75 onwards but it’s a beautiful song. And you did it justice for sure.
Performed with real empathy and feeling, and perfect guitar, flute and keyboard sections, blended in a beautiful kaleidoscope of sound. Outstanding! sttgaegoaktd
I like your Videos very much❤. Maybe you can make a Tutorial from this Song? I Iove it so and I want to learn it to play on my Guitar. Greetings from Germany
Excellent! Only would have wished the singing window hadn't blocked the guitar window as I was hoping to be able to learn the song by watching the acoustic guitar part. Guess it's too late to shrink down the window a bit? Cheerz
Thanks, yeah, I did a poor job editing. Didn't notice I had blocked the guitar. There is a video another fellow has done on UA-cam that is a pretty good tutorial on this. Cheers.
@@snoozedoctor Thank you very much! Your boost will allow me to achieve a pinnacle that's challenged me for a long time. I'm sure you've noticed - there are no lesson tutorials that accurately capture this song anywhere on YT. I'm an inveterate Tull fan since first hearing "This Was". I'd been playing guitar for about 5 years by '69, so I immediately set to learning every JT song I could. For Sossity, I mastered the intro - chords and picking pattern - right off, but could never manage to nail the rest of it, and sync it to the vocal. I've seen your video on Anderson's guitar techniques - you've got a great grasp on them. They always fascinated me - his use of polyphonics, strum variations, string skipping, counterpoint, syncopation - blew me away with each successive album. I managed to play most of them, to one degree or another - but Sossity just exceeded my patience. I always admired Ian's acknowledgement of his guitar limitations, a'la Dirty Harry, but his virtuosity rendered that a non sequitur. We turned out to be in sync in that I received a flute for my 21st birthday, taught myself to play it from Tull albums, and managed to get into a BFA music program with it. I guess it was my instrument too, after all. I still kinda suck at guitar - lol.
josvlietstra thanks for listening and commenting. I have no sense of phrasing and that’s why I don’t consider myself a vocalist. Some singers may not have a great voice but if they have great phrasing, it makes up for it. A great voice without great phrasing isn’t all that enjoyable

Thanks! Even in this early version of the band I loved their ability to rock hard and then to get hauntingly mellow.
Superb ... From someone who saw Ian and Tull play this song when they were barely the legal drinking age in most of the U.S.A
Thanks! This song, in particular, grabbed me on that album. Such a beautiful melody. Ian has such a gift for it.
wow, I had on autoplay unexpectedly, and it jumped to this.. great guitar and voice.. such a marvelous song.. well done I like the organ sound also.

How beautiful. Playing all the parts and singing. Just lovely.

Truly a sublime number by Jethro Tull, and you, good sir, do it justice. Indeed.....

Does anyone know if this is transcribed anywhere; I'd love to have a go, but the timing is doing my head in!!!!
I don't have tab, but I feel the pain with the timing. Those odd measures are all over in his music and hard to wrap your head around!
Great job and I love your guitar collection my friend!

I really love "all" your your recorded parts....please tell me what tuning did you utilize on the Martin....string sizes...thanks
Hi! This is in standard tuning. I use regular light gauge Elixir strings.
The inset picture blocks what your left hand is doing...
Yeah, that was a bad mistake. This is one of my earlier attempts at 2 screens and I didn't even notice until I had finished.

Violin samples are way too forward in the mix and they sound so irritatingly fake - otherwise a damn nice production.
