I got my brother, who loves chess, Cairn from Matagot. It's a 2 player only game with Onitama vibes but more going on. Such a great game, we have played so many times and he loves it.
Two more that are very small but a lot of fun: Homeworlds and Martian Chess, from Looney Labs. I bought mine from the big bookstore we all know and love.
Great video. Onitama is great. War Chest - just got the new 3. expansion! I love Hive Pocket. Santorini you move AND then build at the same turn. Try also Ragnarocks, the follow up game to Santorini. I am so glad you mentioned Go, which is my game number 1 of all time (by a mile).
@@FostertheMeeple it is not like you guys have a 100 game collection so it certainly makes sense to have some games yet to be played haha! You'll be in for a treat, it's our favorite game and every faction just feels so incredibly unique and thematic!
Gigamic range of games are great, Got Quarto, Qawale, Squadro, Quixo, Quaridor(pacman). Quarto Mini fits in a business card holder and we made a neoprene mat that wraps round it. Go to throw in a bag game. Onitama you will probably love. It solves the issue I have with chess. You can't learn how the pieces move, so experienced players can't really dominate newer players. Hive pocket has the ladybug and Mosquito expansion included compared to the normal size one, also makes a great travel game.
Cool video! I really like chess like games. Wanted to give you some suggestions since you'd like to collect all games (good luck with that ;-) ), but two you already mentioned in the honourable mentions, being Onitama (have it and love it, looks great) and That Time You Killed Me (on my wish list). Another one which has a real chess like vibe and was not in the video is Cirondo. It's like 3D chess on multiple platforms. We bought it so many years at Spiel. Don't know if it's still in print though. Played Boop (on my wish list), indeed so cute, have Santorini and Hive Carbon (really like that as well). Big stones and comes in a bag with a zipper to easily take on trips.
Summoner Wars and Philosophy were the two that came to my mind! Two very different games with very different vibes but they both remind me of a chess game in their own ways.
Aside from the games mentioned, Shobu is well liked by a lot of players. Btw for a non-abstract chess-like game, Dungeon Twister should be mentioned, aka Fantasy chess.
Added almost all of these to my wishlist! I have 3 versions of Hive the pocket version the colored version and the carbon version lol I absolutely love playing Onitama! I have all the expansions for it. Been really excited to get mythic mischief Also blokus if it counts it's kinda strategic in placement
If it makes you feel better, Hive Pocket comes with 2 expansions included in the base box, plus a snazzy bag. Totally worth the price. War Chest is also awesome, give it a try Jamie!
Boop is si great, I especially like the ghost piece but haven't played with it yet. So many great games, I really like that Qawale made your list. I was hoping that Kamisado, a hidden gem not on your list would make honorable mention. Chess-like strategy but no capturing. A defensive game until you can force your opponent to give you the round. Then the rules partially change for the next game. Match is to 7 for the "long" variant which should only be about 45-60 minutes. Every time we set it up in our game store, somebody would get intrigued by it and order one. But it might be out of print right now.
I saw the title and immediately thought to myself that War Chest better be on this list! I’m so glad to see it, I hardly ever see it discussed which is a shame because it’s such an amazing game! One of those games that’s the very definition of easy to learn, hard to master.
Tash Kalar! You can play it on BGA. Build patterns with your game pieces that match beings on your cards to summon stronger pieces then activate the special movement/attack abilities of those beings to eliminate your opponent's pieces or to accomplish public goals for points. Vlaada Chivatil has such a unique portfolio and I believe the iconography is the same as that utilized in Mage Knight! It's got multiple variants: pvp, team v team, and 1 vs many (I think). Definitely could use a reprint with deluxe components but they'd be easy enough to pimp out yourself too.
It’s so ugly and has a lot of naked goofy art that distracts from the game but I have all the expansions and it sits collecting dust because nobody wants to play it
@billable1861 My wife won't play it with me either lol. It's one of those games that rewards multiple plays but I think that's any game like chess. A retheme would probably breathe new life into onit.
I don't think Hive should even exist in the normal size! The pocket version isn't "mini" and it comes with some expansion bugs already in it. Pocket hive is in my bag all summer - great game for anywhere!
Hive is one of our favvvvvvorite games. Chess-like for sure, but you only need to think 2 moves ahead, so it's less stressful. The Pocket Edition looks more expensive, but that's because it includes the expansions. It's actually quite a good deal! Thanks for the recommendations!
Games like chess I enjoy: Warchest The Duke (flip the tile everyitme you move it) Navia Dratp (out of print niche shogi-like) Hive Shogi I'm sure I have more but I owned like half your list lol
Ragnarocks is very chess-like IMO. I played it with my fiance (who is very strategic), and lost 22 times in a row but still wanted to keep playing. It's great! I sold my first copy to get the kickstarter edition with the pretty blue stones.
As a huge fan of chess (I probably play around 1,000 games per year) the other abstract strategy games that are fantastic IMO are: Go, Tak, Hive and Shobu. Not an abstract strategy due to the dice rolling but Backgammon is also brilliant.
@grantfraser5430 It's a nifty little game! Variable board, basically no set-up, small footprint, quality components, plays pretty fast (or maybe I'm just really bad at it😆).
Haven’t watched, going to guess the list: - Onitama - Hive - Tak - The King is Dead - War Chest I’ll reply to this comment with my own accuracy, lol. But I love leaving recommendations, so if you love Chess and want the same feeling, but in a very different format, Haggis is like if chess was cards. It’s nothing like chess, but it scratches the same itch for me.
I’m rather disappointed I forgot to put boop. on the list. It’s pretty obvious in hindsight. Anyway, I also should add Santorini before the video goes any further.
Hello ! Here is some other ‘ like this, try that ‘ to had to the list : Go, Hnefetafl or Tablut, For the Crown. Cathedral (wooden version), is in my gaming library, Onitama was available on iOS, but sadly not anymore. Where did you get your cap Jeff ? I moved from Montreal to Moncton 28 years ago and have adopted the maritime’s way of life big time.
You are going to like Onitama!
Kris Burm's GIPF series is fantastic if you like abstracts. DVONN, TZAAR, and YINSH being my favorites. Pretty sure DVONN is in beta on BGA.

So surprised to never hear them talk about Summoner Wars. It just screams Jeff and Jamie imo!!
I know! We own it but have never played it.

FYI there's going to be an "Ultimate Edition" of LOTR Confrontation released on Gamefound soon!

Glad you mentioned That Time You Killed Me. Looks so fun as it is high on my list to play next.

A couple more would be Nine Men Morries, Swords and Strongholds (from the mouse guard series), Coinage and Kabuto Sumo
Thanks for the suggestions!
pocket is smaller, less money and comes with 2 expansion pieces

Have not heard of that one! Will check it out for sure
Onitama is a Blast! I think you will enjoy it.
So glad you dig War Chest!
You sure do know how to make me spend my money friend!

Omg your Disney glass! I thought I was the only one left with a set of those. I believe they were a McDonalds set. So funny!
I’m pretty sure my mom gave them to us haha. She still has glasses from the ‘98 Olympics

Hive really stands out here. It is really really good.

Hope to hear your thoughts on Onitama. :)

Ohhh will check it out!! Thanks!
My wife and I also love Cairn by the designer of Inis which you may also like and work well on this list.
As a huge fan of chess (I probably play around 1,000 games per year) the other abstract strategy games that are fantastic IMO are: Go, Tak, Hive and Shobu. Not an abstract strategy due to the dice rolling but Backgammon is also brilliant.
We mention Go, Tak & Hive!!
Onitama is good. Raptor is a great game that I don’t hear anyone mention and it’s delightful has a chess like back and forth to it.
We’ve played raptor!! It’s very good. Not sure I’d categorize it here but it’s very good
I spy some good mythical morning merch!
You spy correctly!
Have you played General Orders by the Undaunted designers? Great 1v1
I JUST picked it up!! Excited to try it. Love everything David & Trevor do
all of the gipf project games are chess like and quite good.
I'd put Donuts on the list! It's an abstract strategy game by Bruno Cathala that came out last year 🍩
Did you say Bruno Cathala? I need to check this out. Thanks.
@grantfraser5430 It's a nifty little game! Variable board, basically no set-up, small footprint, quality components, plays pretty fast (or maybe I'm just really bad at it😆).
You guys look like fall in Canada, one day it’s summer, the next, winter.
Clicked thinking it said cheese. Expected fromage. Got a great video
To be fair we do talk about cheese
Haven’t watched, going to guess the list:
- Onitama
- Hive
- Tak
- The King is Dead
- War Chest

Alright, I’ll give myself a soft “good job” in guessing! Good list! :)
Great video kids and I’m finally gonna buy Mythic Mischief 😂
Hope you enjoy it!!
iv never won santorini either
Skyrise!

It’s from East Coast Lifestyle!
