  • Wound dehiscence, is when a surgical incision reopens either internally or externally. Although this complication can occur after any surgery, it tends to happen most often within two weeks of surgery and following abdominal or cardiothoracic procedures. Dehiscence is also commonly associated with surgical site infection.

    8 months out from a hysterectomy for cancer, as he’s taking a Pap smear, the doctor says, “Whoops, hold still, don’t move, don’t sit up.” The next day, after emergency surgery he shows up in my room and tells me I had a dehiscence and then he says, you be in this business long enough and you’ll see everything.
