I agree. I feel the same way. It moves me almost to tears.
Part of the credit goes also to the Monteverdi Choir. They turn to gold anything they sing...

Gardiner 's ensemble found all the tenderness and glory in this music.

This sounds like the music angels must sing in the presence of the Almighty. If such a place exists, I hope when I die this is the type of music welcoming me to the Hereafter.

This piece is one of the most beautiful pieces of the entire Renaissance. It is also a compositional tour-de-force. The top four voices imitate the lower four voices five notes higher two bars (measures) later.

Do you mean it's a (double) canon?

Even as a long term lover of all Choral Music, this comes in as my No 1 choice. I can't describe it in the same technique terms as others have done so far, but it is simply hauntingly beautiful, a masterpiece in its own right.
As a 66 Yr old male who thought I'd heard everything, this reduces me to a blubbering wreck each time I hear it - tears of sheer joy!
It's my principle sing at my funeral!

The interweaving of the parts to a static chordal foundation is so evocative. Surely one of the finest examples of early renaissance choral music.

The entire piece is an exact 8 ex 4 canon at the octave! In addition there is a cantus firmus embedded in the fabric. Such tenderness - it sounds to me like a lullaby! (Most performances of this employ a faster tactus.)

I'd forgotten how breathtakingly beautiful this is, but was reminded by a live performance last night, that was definitely 'eye moistening'. The conductor was keen to point out that it was a 'four part canon', and then proceeded to try and demonstrate that via audience participation!

If there be any earthly pieces worthy of the virgin mother and of the Christ she bore, here is one. Upon hearing this music, any soul cleansed by God must be further purified, yet any human at all should enjoy a momentary touch of heaven.

Everything about this piece is flawless. Even without knowing much Latin, you sense this is music beyond time, space, history. The part between 4:11 and 4:42 gives me shivers...
