Minor strategy tip: because you can hold onto a card at the end of a round (get eight cards but only have to play seven), it’s usually the best strategy to hold onto a really damaging card like De-Stalinization until after the turn 3 reshuffle, then send it to space. That way the earliest it can show up again is turn 7. This game is perfect for you, it’s an amazingly deep game for such simple mechanics. Enjoy!
It's ridiculous how bad is he at paying attention to the game. And had he been a more experienced player, he could have won the whole thing on Turn 4. He has the Grain Sales and China card, USSR has CIA Created (an Early War card that didn't show up before the Turn 3 reshuffle, meaning it's in somebody's hand 100%). Reduce the hand size of the Soviets with the Grain Sales (chances are the CIA will not be the card that's pulled), drop the Defcon to 2, do NOT play Nuclear Subs for the event, wait till AR7, when the Soviets have to play CIA, coup a battleground, win the game. EDIT: He actually had Five Year Plan as well - another card capable of reducing Soviet hand. Oh, well…
I'm pretty sure it was a phrase in the Cold War. That's why the China card isn't just called China. It's called the China card... making it the China card card...
Maybe it's my Paradox games background but I think it'd be cool if they added a little ? button to the cards where you can read a snippet of what that event was in history.
Loving it Quill. I love the recent board game focus that's been going on, and it's honestly made me watch what's going on with your channel more closely to see if anything piques my interest. I could watch you play this game (or any like it) tons of times and not get bored. Looking forward to the next part. Thanks for your time and effort!
Hey Quill don't normally comment, but since your playing a game I have both in person and online I thought I'd give you some advice On Coups. The number in the top right of each country is there stability number. The higher the number the more Influence you need to control the country. But it also is a number for how hard it is to coup in the country. So for example a coup in Angola with a rating of 1 means that it has a coup Defence of 2. (1×2). A coup in Japan with a rating of 4 means that it has a Defence of 8. (4×2). How you figure your attack is take your card value and add it to whatever roll you get. If this number beats the coup Defence you have yourself a successful coup. The difference then is how much you take away and you get. For example coup in Angola which has a coup Defence of 2 and 1 USSR Influence . You play a card worth 3 points and roll a 4 making your attack 7 against a Defence of 2. You win by 5 points. First you take away up to 5 Influence from the USSR. They only have 1 so you remove it leaving you with 4 points. Now that all USSR Influence is gone you may add your own with whatever you have left. So in the end of your coup you would end up with 4 Total Influence in Angola. Sorry for this long explanation but I hope you understand. But I do love that your playing this game and your doing awesome.
Would need to be multiplayer though since once you get beyond novice level, the AI is trivially easy to beat. Nice thing is there is quite a range of opponents in MP, though he would have to go with shortish game timers or do the editing / post-commentary thing to fit with his usual commentary tempo.
My dude, you played probably the strongest US event in the game, grain sales to soviets, for the operations points! There is no reason to do that because the event lets you play a card from your opponents hand but also gives you the option of deciding not to if you pull a bad card and play grain sales for operations anyway. There is pretty much never a reason to play that card for operations and you should normally headline it because it lets you play operations in the headline phase which is very very strong.
Quill, you probably should have headlined defectors over FYP. FYP could be use AR1 instead. Also why didn't you just resolve De Gaulle and then add in 3 influence in France (you gave the AI a free chance to get France). Also putting all that influence in Israel hurts me. You could have taken Saudi Arabia and Iran back and prevented dominance instead of Israel. South Korea could have been plugged with Arab-Israeli war. Defectors should have been saved for the next headline. Flower Power is VERY strong. That's usually worth around 6 VPs, usually more given how early it was played. Control doesn't need non-battlegrounds. But the worst mistake was not playing Grain Sales to Soviets. This is the best american card in the game Quill. This should have been 100% your headline. You get to steal an opponent's card and coup with it.
This is a good game. Online is really tough as most people are quite good and you have a clock so need to go fast. on a side note, what is funny is that NZ doesn't exist on the map
Just last night I completely misjudged the Olympic Game card (forgot the rule about it). Was on Defcon 2 when I played that card.....& promptly lost the game as a result......oops.
I really like the ominous background sounds. It really adds to the atmosphere.
It does! Such suspense. Both sides are quiet waiting for one side to much the big red button.

10:10 'No, that was Asia, Middle East has not been scored' .... in the discarded pile are the Middle East and Asia scoring cards side by side
so frustrating
Middle East was scored just the round before, barely seconds ago, as well.
It's ridiculous how bad is he at paying attention to the game. And had he been a more experienced player, he could have won the whole thing on Turn 4. Right after it scored
to be fair constantly narrating while you're playing is quite difficult I imagine.
"He's going to play the China card" lmao that sounds like a phrase
I'm pretty sure it was a phrase in the Cold War. That's why the China card isn't just called China. It's called the China card... making it the China card card...
It's a Trump quote nowadays.
Maybe it's my Paradox games background but I think it'd be cool if they added a little ? button to the cards where you can read a snippet of what that event was in history.
If you look at the settings, you can check out every card and the history behind the card.
@@analychemist a little setting that could allow an ingame-popup to happen would be nice tho.
Really love how well this game catches the tense atmosphere during cold war
of two giants playing across the world
So I played the Olympic Games card during Defcon 2 - thinking the computer would lose if he boycotted..
..And now I'm playing Fallout.

I like how each defcon has its own theme like 5 has regular music, 4 has nervous music, 3 has scary ambiance, and 2 has no music playing at all
The radio voices in the background just add nostalgia
I would be happy if this game gets added to the regular rotation.
Would need to be multiplayer though since once you get beyond novice level, the AI is trivially easy to beat. Quill you are killing me, "maybe i should have played that" why arent looking/reading all your cards at the start of the turn!?
Amazing series keep up the great work!
Work: great! The upkeep series: amazing!
THIS GAME IS AWESOME. I NEED.
I just bought this and beat the AI in about an hour on turn 4.
guess I should find some friends to play with

At 15:38, I shouted "Coup Libya!" You apparently couldn't hear me.
i love this series but i really wish you would stop posting them around 4 am so i can go to bed 😅
I have got this game! But zssr vs Poland and other slavs version! It's pretty damn balanced and interesting
Pretty awesome
A DEFCON of 2 is high whilst a DEFCON of 5, is low.
Just last night I completely misjudged the Olympic Game card (forgot the rule about it). Was on Defcon 2 when I played that card.....& promptly lost the game as a result......oops.
16:32 Imagine starting a nuclear war because of the Olympics. Don't fuck with Adidas.
middle east gettin scored and seconds later nope that was not scored yet, gotta influence there more xD
>not playing as the soviet union
This is weird are you OK quill?
He has put points into South America at the bottom
Here we go again.
10:30 No, the ME scoring card just got played! Eyes! Brain! Use them!
22:00 Deserved for wasting Grain Sales.
Why do you feel so obligated to play Muslim Revolution? No one will be mad if you space it.
28:00 What a spectacular waste of Nuclear Subs.
I still don't know what MilOps does. can anyone tell me please?
Game boy ?
There is no reason you should not have couped the AI out of Angola and Nigeria.
Oo
Man only 12 upvotes?
