    From lemurs to lizards, ants to amphibians, sharks to chickens, hundreds of animals "play dead" as a survival tactic. But how and why do animals do this? Tierney Thys explains how this curious behavior, known as tonic immobility or TI for short, can be used as a defense or offense.

      True. That's why I kinda don't understand the point of playing dead, like, what makes them think we or any predator won't make sure they're dead? But it works thus far, so I guess I'm wrong.

    • @BRUNOvsALADEEN
      @BRUNOvsALADEEN 6 років тому +23

      Roaches can be recognized easily if they're under catatonia.
      First, put a pack of ants around the roach.
      If it flinches around the ants, its damn alive.
      I suggest getting an Isopropyl Alcohol and burn it's head, dead or alive.
      It's brutal and gory but I promise it'll legit die for a few secs.

    Once my dad caught an iguana.
    The next day, the iguana was dead.
    He opened the cage, turned around and when he turned back to the cage, the iguana was gone. He looked around and on the distance he saw the greenish animal achieving his way out of there. When he told me the story I almost died of laughter.

    A similar tactic is found sometimes in game, where a player freezes and does not move at all, luring cocky enemies to emote or taunt the "afk" before killing them, at which point said player "resurrects" and finishes off the cocky enemy

    “Silence is the most powerful scream”. Great statement! I know that when the emergency services attend an accident scene, it’s the silent people they go to first, as if you can scream, you are first and foremost conscious, but those who appear conscious, but remain silent and still, they may well have serious internal injuries. Well, that’s what I was told in a first aid session. 🙏🙏🙏

    I used to have chickens, we had an excitable dog and one day he actually caught one of them. So me and my family see this limp chicken in the dogs mouth. We shout at him to stop, he does. About 15seconds later, the chicken gets back up and just kinda, goes back to whatever it was doing.

    Clipnosis is also known as "transport response". Newborn infant boys (mostly in the U.S.) that are subjected to circumcision sometimes "play dead" because they are completely overcome with pain, some to the point of "secondary apnea" (they stop breathing). If you've ever heard, "they slept through it" be very very concerned.

    Thanatosis in lemurs? That's news to me, and I work with and write extensively about lemurs. What's your source?
    Are you talking about colugos (so-called "flying lemurs")? That's the only mention I could find. If so, colugos aren't even primates, and they're definitely not lemurs.

      I keep chickens and I haven't observed that behavior in them. I've heard of them playing dead when overly pestered by a rooster, but hadn't seen it myself. My quails do frequently take cover when nervous either by crouching down and sitting still or ducking into loose straw/grass.

      Wingedshadowwolf In the case of chickens, I can find research articles and secondary sources to confirm it. (Whereas I cannot find anything published about thanatosis in lemurs.)
      If you haven't seen the behavior in your own collection of chickens, then the chickens may not be getting stimulated properly to induce the behavior.

      "may not be getting stimulated properly to induce the behavior" That is probably a good thing! Although, it would help when I have to catch them. Some of the girls do a submissive squat, but I think that is different.

      Yeah, definitely dodgy source material used here. Mixed up possums and opposums as well. Feigning death, 'playing possum', that's opposums ... NOT possums.

    Excellent and insightful video as always! I do have a small request of a question: how and why does dopamine influence emotion in a positive way? In other words, how does it bring about emotion in us, when the two quite seem the 'distant relatives'? Why does it not cause a negative mood?
    Thank you!

    i still don't get it: why would a predator not attack you if you play dead?

    • @DraRed73
      @DraRed73 6 років тому +3

      Marco Pohl ,I think the same. With the example of the owl, or seems more likely the owl thinks the possum is diseased and this not recommended eating... Being dead surely could not be much of a turn off to something that is about kill...

    • @Wiggins-
      @Wiggins- 6 років тому +3

      It's typically the case of fooling the predator into thinking their prey has a disease, I know june beetles will also spaz out when they play dead, like they are having a seizure, to make its sudden death more believably a cause of disease or a virus. I assume it's the same thing with the strange poses that many animals take when playing dead.
