From lemurs to lizards, ants to amphibians, sharks to chickens, hundreds of animals "play dead" as a survival tactic. But how and why do animals do this? Tierney Thys explains how this curious behavior, known as tonic immobility or TI for short, can be used as a defense or offense.

If a cockroach play dead
"Oh boy, I will make it real"
Cockroaches won’t even get the chance to fake it cuz I’ll make it real on the spot
Cockroaches are resistant little fricks. You could think you killed it while it's just catatonic.
True. That's why I kinda don't understand the point of playing dead, like, what makes them think we or any predator won't make sure they're dead? But it works thus far, so I guess I'm wrong.
Roaches can be recognized easily if they're under catatonia.
First, put a pack of ants around the roach.
If it flinches around the ants, its damn alive.
I suggest getting an Isopropyl Alcohol and burn it's head, dead or alive.
It's brutal and gory but I promise it'll legit die for a few secs.
This guy suggests using ants to check if roaches are still alive as if everyone is just carrying around a pack of ants everyday lol

Once my dad caught an iguana.
The next day, the iguana was dead.
He opened the cage, turned around and when he turned back to the cage, the iguana was gone. He looked around and on the distance he saw the greenish animal achieving his way out of there. When he told me the story I almost died of laughter.

YOU'RE VIOLATING THE GENEVA CONVENTION
That was a hilarious scene with good comedic timing!

yes! I was looking for this comment!
why does this violate it?
Playing dead for animals is the equivalent to humans pretending to sleep to get out of doing something lol😂😂
Like School
Work at home too 🤣
A similar tactic is found sometimes in game, where a player freezes and does not move at all, luring cocky enemies to emote or taunt the "afk" before killing them, at which point said player "resurrects" and finishes off the cocky enemy

YOUR VIOLATING THE GENEVA CONVENSION
what i learned:
1 owls shake their prey into submission
2 owls are as large as some scientists
“Silence is the most powerful scream”. Great statement! I know that when the emergency services attend an accident scene, it’s the silent people they go to first, as if you can scream, you are first and foremost conscious, but those who appear conscious, but remain silent and still, they may well have serious internal injuries. Well, that’s what I was told in a first aid session. 🙏🙏🙏
*UA-cam* : why do animals play dead
*Me* : I don't need sleep, I need answers
“Playing possum” - that’s too cute !
Science with Katie how are you everywhere?
Matthew Anthony No it’s called being an engaged member of the UA-cam community. She’s not being negative, so what’s your problem?
How have you never heard that lol.
you are ubiquitous
Hi Katie.
You know, what would a hyena react when its prey plays dead? Would it still eat the prey because it usually eats carcasses?
Da Dragon Durp Yes, it only works if the predator isn't a scavenger.
Da Dragon Durp I
Most predators eat carcasses. That's why it's important to emulate the smell, so the predators believe they aren't edible anymore.
O wow ive seen u in a comment section right down the road, howdy neighbour
JTZ animals are capable of eating rotten meat so that doesn’t explain it
There are actually four "F"s that make the Fight Or Freeze response! Those are Fight (pretty self explanatory), Freeze (not being able to move), Flight (running away) and Fawn (trying to appease the attacker). Thought you guys in the comment section might want to know :)

The drawing for this animation is different than usual. It's not too childish, and it's very unique! I love it XD
This explains a lot! Me and my dad were on a trip and we'd just come out of a cave when there was a landslide right above us. We just froze. We were alright, it wasn't a big one, but neither of us could understand why we hadn't run.
I used to have chickens, we had an excitable dog and one day he actually caught one of them. So me and my family see this limp chicken in the dogs mouth. We shout at him to stop, he does. About 15seconds later, the chicken gets back up and just kinda, goes back to whatever it was doing.
Silence is the most powerful scream. Just like that.-0:24
2:53 that was unexpected lol
Those animation had me really laughing like a loon. And now I understand why in television show the person going to be hit doesn't move away and just stand there like a statue, waiting to be hit. Guess, those script writers know more science than me. 😅
Suman Sahoo im sure ted ed will be proud and glad to know that
I knew that there will be someone who will share this in comment, that's why I came down to watch comments 😂

I want a separate video detailing the science behind a chicken's ability to actually be able to accurately sense whether a predator's eyes are on them.
That possum at the beginning was hilarious
Very good lesson!
Thanos doesn't play dead, he is death itself.
squalltheonly they said Thanatos, you moron!
Siôn Topps I think he ment Thanos from Marvel, most recent in Avengers Infinity War. Think before you bash out with personal attacks

Quite the animation!

Clipnosis is also known as "transport response". Newborn infant boys (mostly in the U.S.) that are subjected to circumcision sometimes "play dead" because they are completely overcome with pain, some to the point of "secondary apnea" (they stop breathing). If you've ever heard, "they slept through it" be very very concerned.
These sound effects are gold

The animation of this video is so adorable !
Poor chickens, they’re so defenceless
Star Cherry and yummy
chickens are demons okay, have you ever been attacked by one?

bear: *roars*
*keeps standing still*

By then there is no point in running. It will run faster than you can.

Thanatosis in lemurs? That's news to me, and I work with and write extensively about lemurs. What's your source?
Are you talking about colugos (so-called "flying lemurs")? That's the only mention I could find. If so, colugos aren't even primates, and they're definitely not lemurs.
I keep chickens and I haven't observed that behavior in them. I've heard of them playing dead when overly pestered by a rooster, but hadn't seen it myself. My quails do frequently take cover when nervous either by crouching down and sitting still or ducking into loose straw/grass.
Wingedshadowwolf In the case of chickens, I can find research articles and secondary sources to confirm it. (Whereas I cannot find anything published about thanatosis in lemurs.)
If you haven't seen the behavior in your own collection of chickens, then the chickens may not be getting stimulated properly to induce the behavior.
"may not be getting stimulated properly to induce the behavior" That is probably a good thing! Although, it would help when I have to catch them. Some of the girls do a submissive squat, but I think that is different.
Yeah, definitely dodgy source material used here. Mixed up possums and opposums as well. Feigning death, 'playing possum', that's opposums ... NOT possums.
Excellent and insightful video as always! I do have a small request of a question: how and why does dopamine influence emotion in a positive way? In other words, how does it bring about emotion in us, when the two quite seem the 'distant relatives'? Why does it not cause a negative mood?
Thank you!
Loved every bit of this info :)
I love ❤️ this video! TED add always does a good job.
Am I the only one who thinks the animals of the video are cute?
Vid:"Playing dead is also called thanatosis"
Me: Does this mean Thanos is gonna fake his own death at some point of the next movie?!
This is really interesting. Thanks!
Hi TED-Ed , many thanks for this amazingly informative video. Loved it.
Big Thanks to Tierney Thys & Susan Zimmerman. Cheers
Thanatotis = thanos wow so I guess now we know the plot for the next avenger movie just play dead

0:20 that owl!!!😂😂😂😂
i still don't get it: why would a predator not attack you if you play dead?
Marco Pohl ,I think the same. With the example of the owl, or seems more likely the owl thinks the possum is diseased and this not recommended eating... Being dead surely could not be much of a turn off to something that is about kill...
It's typically the case of fooling the predator into thinking their prey has a disease, I know june beetles will also spaz out when they play dead, like they are having a seizure, to make its sudden death more believably a cause of disease or a virus. I assume it's the same thing with the strange poses that many animals take when playing dead.
Video is a bit less good than usual. Art is a bit drafty and video's not as well written
GiggitySam Entz videos aren't made by the same artists every time!
