I’ve FINALLY got diagnosed about 3 weeks ago at the age of 21 and it feels so good to finally know that I was correct. The biggest downside I’m finding is that even while reading the results, it’s obvious that a lot of people don’t believe me 🙁

I have the same problem, because people know me for so long and I am really good at masking they don't believe that I have ASD which is really frustrating because even though you ARE neurodivergent they don't give you some slack

I'm 32. People who knew me as a child are not surprised finding out now that I am. Friends who haven't known me too long are completely surprised and don't believe me. Someone even said, "if you're autistic then we all are." But I've lived my whole life trying to fit in. Screw people's opinions. We know who we are and that's what matters!

I find that so odd...what are they suppose to believe? It's literally how your brain was formed at birth lol. Unless they have built-in brain scanners into retinas, it's not about believing or disbelieving...it's not a religious decree. XD I think people have a general fear of the unknown, and an autistic brain is very "unknown" to someone that is neurotypical. And we can say the same about their brains! And we have a lot more reasons to distrust their brains, since it's their brains that draw up most of the rules for society ;-)

Just human psychology in areas where aspies struggle. Formation of friendships and relationships. No verbal communication etc. I've gotten a little obsessed with reading psychology books and websites. I'm a dog trainer so I've studied canine behaviour and there are overlaps. My feeling is that, as an aspie, I have the temperament of a Jack Russell Terrier!

I frustrates me to realize that, at 35, there seems to be very few resources for people on the spectrum as an adult, in my local community. It's almost ALL geared towards children? Whyyyyy. Autistic kids grow up in autistic adults: there is no "cure", we always need help and support. I never got it and to find out it isn't here even when I have the ability to access it now is really disheartening. And this is the same community where my own brother was diagnosed 30 years ago...where have all those autistic children gone to, since then? That's the stuff that really bugs me, even with the incredible relief of finally being able to self-identify properly.

I'm only 14 and haven't learned to adapt very well yet, so knowing there are other people out there that have grown up and learned how to live with the condition makes me feel better. I recently got diagnosed with aspergers (technically ASD now i think), and its been a weird feeling over last 2 months of relief. My brain wasn't gaslighting me my entire childhood. I am now 18, and realise that my aspergers helps me play to my strengths, programming just always had made sense to me, and lead me to a place where i can be self sufficient emotionally and financially!

I was diagnosed in 2003 with Aspergers but kind of left adrift after that. (I was 30) Was just rediagnosed this Spring as ASD 2, and am on the way to applying for disability. The second round was a LOT more informative and helpful. I have medical challenges as well, but this was really helpful in a lot of ways.

My best advice to you is to be you. The bright, unique, person you are. Educate people and tell them if you are making them uncomfortable or saying and doing things that are not socially acceptable, let them know that it's okay to quietly and kindly bring it to your attention. Trust me, The people who will bring value to your life,,, they will stick around. Everyone else, they weren't fortunate enough to get to know you. Feel sorry for those people. Joints dislocate, hurt, cause mobility issues. It has a ton of co-syndromes too, like dysautonomia. Not being able to regulate your autonomic system IE: Heart does what it wants, pupils dilate, fainting, dizziness etc. Also, Pots.. Postural Orthotatic Tachycardia Syndrome. My veins are too week to allow my lower limbs adequate blood supply and when I sit the blood pools into the surrounding tissue, thus causing the heart to beat faster to allow circulation and this causes fainting. When I read a fictional book I imagine actors as characters, and it is at least easier visualizing the book characters. It’s so difficult for me that I have to write the book characters and actors on a bookmark to remember.

I've been diagnosed for two years now. I'm trying desperately trying get a grip on what it is and how to manage it better. I've mentioned the therapy and such to the GP but they seem to think that nothing is wrong. So will not refer. Because I'm now 25, the support has shrunk to almost nothing. I'm also going through tribunal for the r the second time in just over a year for ESA. Inspite a section three being applied after the last tribunal.

@@madsnoop7 Just know, you are under no obligation to tell anyone. It may take some time to get a diagnosis depending on where you live due to waiting lists and whether or not you have private healthcare, but you genuinely don't need to tell anyone other than doctors. Every first world country has some level of patient confidentiality, so as long as you're not a danger to yourself or anyone else, you can be a minor and doctors still can't inform anyone else without your permission. So maybe, go for the appointment and then see if you want to tell anyone. The internet is a great resource now, tumblr and discord are really good places to find other autistics and see where your traits cross over, and they'll be a good support group for if you do get that diagnosis.

Self-diagnosed at 35...definitely don't recommend it, but I'm glad I was able to come to terms with it in my own way...but decidedly not in my own time, of course. The most important thing for ANYONE new to this to do is to connect with other people on the spectrum. Coping starts with connecting with the people who think like you, and not immediately trying to cope with not being NT...I think that's a mistake that happens far too often in psychotherapy and adult autists should be very cautious about that direction.

Hi, I'm an undiagnosed aspie. I came to know that I have ASD when, in a stressful moment, my mother (whom I love to death and happens to be a psychologist along with my father) let slip that she believes I have ASD, same as her father. After researching ASD and debunking my own preconceptions, I came to the same conclusion.
I am 22, an undergraduate, have an IQ of roughly 140, and also a type 1 diabetic. Currently, I work in a hospital emergency room (I know, perfect job environment for an aspie, right?). I plan on continuing my education through med school and on to a specialist practice.
What I'd like to figure out is if I should make this diagnosis official. Are there any specific reasons this would help me in my education and career? Make things harder? Do you know anyone (other than Dr. Shaun Murphy) who is a medical practitioner with ASD?
