HELP! I can't decide on a color for the truck... the most commented color or the comment with the most likes is what I'll pick! UNLESS it's shit brown, hot pink, or some other horrible color you guys will troll me with.
Paint shop is gonna be like "Cool dude you sanded it for us that actually helps us a lot, we'll take care of it no problem" *Mike leaves* "Sand again, sand EVERYTHING again"
The body shop is going to hack all that body filler out and start over with fresh metal anything other then that the rust will come back through your new paint job
They may use a more expensive filler, but it will not adhere propery. Mustang lab is correct, the RIGHT way to do it is down to bare metal, and work the metal to reduce the amount of filler
Mike G I have a feeling they are going to look at hm like he’s an idiot... then be like we can make this look ok for about a week. The if you want it done right we’ll have to cut all the rot out..
Tomowenazin I’ve said it a thousand times this guy is a rich clueless wanna be cat guy. He doesn’t build a damn thing. I wouldn’t have my car where it is without a lot of help. However eat least the whole time I was out there turning wrenches and actually learning and working on the damn thing.
Uploads video tomorrow “I plasti dipped my OBS Chevy truck in my driveway *Didn’t Go as Planned!*” and two months later “This is why you don’t do you’re own paint prep” 🤦🏻♂️
@@SurviventheOnslaught Even at Maaco they're going to charge a lot of money if Mike wants all that rust and body work done along with clear coated special color. I've had Maaco paint some new parts and damaged areas. They are not anywhere as cheap as people think (for a fully prepped clear coated paint job). But they are still a lot cheaper than a well known paint specialist shop. But some times you get what you paid for. I've had some bad experiences and good experiences with Maaco paint jobs.
Back in 87 Chevrolet introduced their new 1988 models. My roommate at the time bought an extended cab long bed. That sucker was like a stretch limo! Rode so smooth & handled well at 90 MPH on the freeway. This was in Texas- away from the Gulf & yet the truck was about a year old & GM replaced the roof because it was already rusting out. I'm sure they corrected that problem by 93. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Body work is a damn gift brother. I did the bodywork on my 66 mustang, sand, Bondo, sand, Bondo X 20 more times, and after paint definitely imperfections here and there. My big problem was eventually down the road the rust pushed through and lifted parts of the paint near my door seals. It's a great learning experience but once the pros can take over it will be 👌
When you purchased this truck I wondered why and was not enthused at all. After hearing all the plans for it, I am soooo EXCITED to see the future Videos of this truck. I never should've doubted you!!!! It depends if you want it Military paint or brighter. I think that bright ralley blue would be Sweet Looking!
Yeah, I just used the one that's like a third of the price of the 3M brand one and it worked great. That was about a week ago and I did fuck up on tearing the moulding off and now there's big chips of paint gone on my door
haha yea i would use one for my truck i have a 98 z71 and the that had it before me ripped off the stuff and didnt give a single fuck he just ripped it off and theres paint chips and all and its bad.....😂
Question. I got my order from inshane design yesterday and it was only half my order. I understand they were super busy trying to fill orders. But how do I call them to get the other half of the order. It was only two black 12 inch tattered flag decals.
never hurts to try and learn as you go but many factors go into prepping for painting, and many spots can come back in your new paint job as there are thousands of problems that can occur, so before you spend money on getting it painted make sure they double check your work!
for the molding adhesive you want a 'toffee wheel' or stripe remover wheel, its a wheel of rubber that attaches to a drill and rubs off the adhesive, smells like toffee when it gets hot
ToyBox Car Club thank you I just subbed you !!! And I plan on making some more videos soon. I was so busy with work for the past few months that I didn’t have time to put out the kind of videos I wanted
Thanks for the sub haha. I know I've seen that RS on your channel. I don't remember who's it was though. Will you be at the Carlisle Ford Nationals with it?
I've got a 99 Tahoe. Try rolling down the window and lifting up on the door when you close it. If it closes, look at the door latch assembly. Look at the driver side and compare it to the passenger side. You'll see the problem. Replace the door latch assembly and the door bushings. You're going to need help or just hold the door up with a jack stand while you take out the pins. Also, instead of unplugging the like, 3 wires, and fishing them through the cab, just have the door sag down to the ground.
You need a rubber eraser wheel for the end of a drill take the adhesive off. Look it up mike. Those eraser wheels are perfect for adhesive, door moldings, anything sticky.
Just some friendly body work advice, don't use the electric sander. Get you the longest flexible sanding block you can find and start out with a lower grit paper to scuff through the clear and into the paint and primer being careful as to not get to bare metal or you'll have to rattle can primer that spot. Use an X pattern when sanding on large panels with the block as to get an even surface throughout the whole vehicle. Make sure to get into panel gaps by hand as good as possible. Once the whole truck is scuffed, rinse and repeat with higher and higher grit papers until you have a smooth even surface. Also dont pay attention to the previous owners "body work" the body shop will cut out areas that had rust and have new panels welded in. Happy sanding!
I’d Definitely do a hunter green and the 6” lift you can clear 37s with some trimming and the right offset wheel look into custom offsets and check out the gallery keep up the grate content have a 1990 GMC Sierra single cab stepside 4x4 on 33s this is awesome to see a build like this from start to finish!
What's fucking crazy to me now is feeling my age cause I'm still young but someone like you makes me feel old cause you weren't even born in 93 which for some reason is just weird.i feel like it was yesterday I was running around playing games with my brother and cousins but when someone younger says something like that it hits me that it was years ago and that's all over.
Not sure about the later models Mike, but on my 82 C10 I had that same issue with the doors. Check the strikers/pin that the door latch grabs onto, mine were missing a piece of plastic that goes around it. Either get new strikers with the plastic or cheap out like me and just put a piece of pipe around it. I used 1/2 PEX on mine, works great to this day.
Rino line the complete truck I did it to my 03 crew cab and it worked out great .... this way you dont have to worry about rough paint or bondo or anything like that.... and its scratch proof ... great for off roading
Sorry but ... for me it is painful to watch ! me being a body man and watching someone doing bodywork, prep, but ...that's how you learn I guess Your just making more work for the. "other guys. Lol"
*That adhesive you need to pretty much scrape off. You need to remove the aluminum trim around the wheels too (phillips screws front and rear) and as for those panels that were replaced already i would cut those back out and make sure they are installed correctly. There is no sense glazing them in and you not knowing if they are going to rust right out on you all over again right away. put them in right THEN fill and properly finish them with body glaze and prime it with metal etching primer make sure it's all smooth then your front and rear bumpers will need to be removed as well as the grille and head and tail lights. i would also wait to install the mirrors till the paint has been done. you'll also want to remove the 4X4 decals (heat gun) and replace those screwed up rockers while you're at it too. sounds like a lot but it's not really. that little Ryobi sander is a finish sander and you really need to be cutting it down with 220 so it doesn't cut too deep but still makes shorter work of everything*
A lot of “pros” in here... people don’t realise this is a project something to learn on... not like your trying to paint a Ferrari lol. Love the vids and have fun :)
I got a 91 Chevy c1500 but mine is 2 wheel drive. I researched for my door panel (Which is destroyed) and it was about 450-500 dollars. The door shell itself is about 150ish. The door hangs and wobbles but it still runs great.
If you plan on getting it done at a shop, let them prep and paint it. If not they will charge you more to go over your work. Grind out all old body work and see what you are working with and start fresh. Wish you the best.

Maaco does better at sanding lol.
The body shop is going to hack all that body filler out and start over with fresh metal anything other then that the rust will come back through your new paint job
Unless they have better filler. It's an older truck so they might not go crazy unless specified by Mike.
MAACO! It looks good to me!

They flip the air cleaner for a little more flow, but it also gives it more intake noise, which just sounds better mostly.
Also allowing hot engine compartment air directly into the engine losing you all of the "benefits" of the "less restrictive" air cleaner lid flip hack
