"Weird Al" Yankovic Gets Eye Surgery

  • I was tired of being virtually blind without my glasses, so on Jan. 23, 1998, I got LASIK eye surgery. I was scheduled to do the operation in a normal (private) way, but then I was informed by my doctor that he would perform the operation for free if I was willing to let a local TV station broadcast it LIVE on the air. Hey, what can I say, I'm a sucker for free healthcare. Thanks to Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz for this archival footage.

    Glad this surgery worked out for Al. I also had LASIK, and the results for me were...horrific. My vision is O.K.-ish (it was better with glasses), but one in six people who get LASIK end up with permanent dry-eye problems (according to the FDA). This is because almost *all* of the nerves of the cornea are severed during the creation of the LASIK flap, which is a significant amount of damage to try to recover from. LASIK centers like to give their own doctored explanation of the risks, but they obviously have a vested interest in making the surgery seem way better than it actually is.
    While this nerve damage usually manifests itself as chronic dry-eye, for me it turned into chronic severe untreatable eye pain (a much less common but completely devastating side effect). This wasn't from a botched surgery or me not following directions post-surgery, it's just a thing that happens sometimes that they have no idea why.

    • @_FFFFFF_

      How do you rank the pain out of 10 ? what has been done since ?

    • @NoName-ik2du
      @NoName-ik2du 5 місяців тому +2

      @@_FFFFFF_ On a scale where 10 is so bad you pass out, and 9 is unbearable to the point you can only writhe on the floor in pain, I say my eye pain peaks are about 8 edging its way almost into 9 at times. A big issue with the pain is that it can go on for days without stopping, so even if you're only at a 6 or a 7, it starts to become unbearable because it just won't stop.
      I've been dealing with this for about two and a half years at this point, and have been to six different eye places looking for relief. The first five all acknowledged this was a known post-LASIK problem, but none had any solutions that worked. A number of different eye drops were tried (artificial tears, steroid drops, special prescriptions for dry eye, allergy drops, serum tears made from my own blood, you name it), none worked. They've tried a few procedures that involve rejuvenating the oil glands in the eyelids and cleaning the eyelashes, none of those helped. They've tried punctal plugs (to block the tear ducts to help keep tears in your eyes for longer), those had no effect. Warm or cold compresses didn't help. Nerve pain medication didn't do much (if anything).
      The sixth doctor that I'm seeing now is giving me a treatment called "PRGF tears" (custom eye drops that cost about $240/month). Very few places make them; luckily this doctor is only about three hours away from me. I've been on that about four months. I'm starting to see a little bit of improvement, but I'm still in very bad shape with severe dry eye and pain episodes that cannot be controlled. Some of the pain has been replaced with other weird (and equally overbearing) physical sensations that I'm not even sure how to describe. Not sure if this is going to be the thing that solves my problems, but if it is, it looks like it's going to take many months (if not years) to work and thousands of additional dollars.

      @@maryjane32kc I'm not a doctor, but I would imagine having fibromyalgia would greatly increase the risks of a negative outcome from LASIK (in the nerve/pain category, not the vision category).
      I'd say ask get the opinion of a doctor, but the doctors that know about LASIK also want to _sell_ you LASIK, so they generally give you a biased opinion that downplays the risks.
      I wouldn't risk it if I were in your shoes, but given I had one of the worst possible outcomes of the surgery, I'm also obviously going to be biased.

    This was so interesting to watch for me. I went to UCLA for undergrad (I walked past the eye institute all the time), and in 2021, I got an eye procedure using a device that had just been approved in the United States (ICL lens). Actually, my nearsightedness was too profound for laser, so that was my only option. I’m happy to say that I now see 20/20 and it’s really changed my life, and was about as painless as Al’s procedure here. I am grateful every day I wake up and see clearly. Cheers and thanks for the upload!!

      @sandrafaith 6 місяців тому +3

      Oooh, that is the procedure I've always been interested in. Fascinating that the approval only came so recently, as a place in Oregon was offering this well before that (I believe they pioneered the technique--I. Howard Fine is the name I remember). Anyway. Glad it's worked so well for you!

    I had eye surgery back when I was a kid. I think it did correct my vision a bit, but it was mainly to fix my lazy eye. I still need glasses to this day. Glad you got a sedative, I got my medicine at the wrong time, and my vision was blurry and painful. My family got me a few gifts for when I came home, so at some point I just said screw it, and held my eyes open until everything subsided and I could see again. They REAL annoying part though was I needed help with bathing for a while and had to wear goggles to protect my eyes during that period. Just though I'd share my experience.
