  • Children of Time is the first book of a trilogy from Adrian Tchaikovsky that won the Arthur C. Clarke award for Science Fiction in 2016. And, more importantly, joins the pantheon of all-time favourite sci-fi reads for me. The centuries fly by, but brace yourself for a millennia of spider content. A fantastic stand-alone read that I just devoured.

There is a side plot that I wish the first book completed but it doesn’t complete until the half way point of the third book. The power and communication of music. On the ship music is censored and people forget the music of the past and make music for the present. The song Kashmir by Led Zeppelin is put on the chopping block on the ship meanwhile it becomes a battle cry for a tribe of Spiders. Rock N Roll music becomes a primary piece of their culture even though it is not played in the air. 5 different classic rock songs become universal in all species civilizations in the books.
I find it funny how birds, octopus, Spiders, and some energy based life forms all play and listen to “All Around The Clock Tower,” by Jimi Hendrix.

One of the reasons I tend to prefer fantasy over sci-fi is my science radar goes off too much.

I hadn't thought of that! Magic does let you get away with a ton. Still I think I'm done with "middle earth" fantasy for now. More Middle Eastern and Asian fantasy if anything for me.

Spiders!! Right? lots of spiders scampering around doing spider things. Was not ready, but it turns out it's the ants you need to really be terrified of... just saying

I thought it was a trilogy as well, but in a recent interview on the channel ‘Steve Talks Books’ he mentioned he recently pitched book four, titled ‘Children of Strife’
I’m pretty sure the other series he was writing back and forth with this one, called The Final Architecture, is just a trilogy and is complete.

Good to know - though I'm still on the fence on getting to book 3, my sci-fi window is closing fast and I want to finish the 3-Body Problem series first!

I listened to it a few years ago and while I liked it I never was interested in contiuning with the series. Listening to you now I think I forgot most of the story, it's the spiders that got stuck most :D

that might have been the right call - book 2 was just ok and while it picks up where book 1 leaves off it didn't need to be. Not sure about book 3 now

If you like alien stories , can I suggest to you Foreigner by C. J. Cherryh? its a currently 21 books with a 22 coming out in october and yes there is a whole bunch of them. so I would you suggest you to maybe check out ether options for E-books , audiobooks or maybe using Overdrive/Libby to be able to read this series without runnning out of space on a book shelf. also the first books is not really the best in the series so if you want to maybe skip to the 3 book that is an option.
