  • After a string of so-so reads, Our Missing Hearts comes in hot with an absolute banger of a modern day fairy tale set 10 seconds in the future. But the real treasure was the 1978 essay recommended in the author's note at the end.

    Dear Poptimist,
“Growing xenophobia is the water that we are swimming in.” So true. Thanks for this thoughtful video. I’m off to find that Power of the Powerless essay now.
    Sincerely,
    Another flan fan

Worth the read! And cheers to another flan fan! I did not realize how much it's loved, despite being woefully under-represented at most restaurants.

@@ThePoptimist I like all the iterations: crème brûlée; crema catalana; pastéis de nata… yum!

I put off reading Our Missing Hearts because I knew it would hit hard. I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area and we are still dealing with hate crimes against mostly elder Asians. I’m so glad I finally picked it up. Instead of dread the book filled me with hope. This is my favorite of hers. Ive added the essay to my most read sooner pile.
Stay warm. I am so ready for spring. We just had a crazy winter storm here with lots of snow on our hills. 🥶🥶🥶

Some of the attacks are just horrifying! So ready for spring here, it just keeps coming down! It'll probably melt in another week but in the meantime it's a mess.

I could tell you about one Flan I had in Benton Harbor, MI more than twenty years ago. The restaurant has closed and the chef went on to other ventures…

Sounds like one hell of a flan! I was like that with a particular pasta, hunted down the chef (4 restaurants later) and asked if he would be willing to make it again, which he generously did.

I'm always up for some flan... if someone else has made it. Felt exactly the same way about Our Missing Hearts-my favorite of hers.

Love me some flan! But it's definitely not a dessert staple at restaurants

I found the first half of this book tough to get through and dry, my interest didn’t pick up until Margaret appears and she actually explains the crisis from her perspective. The flow of writing changes too - for the better IMO.

Even though I've seen so many good reviews of Celeste Ng books, I've never been pulled to read any of her previous works. But this one sounds exactly like my type of book! Putting this on the tbr immediately.

Hope you like it as much as I did! I slept on this one for too long, if it wasn't for it coming from Ng I probably would have missed it completely - glad that didn't happen.

I finding I'm not alone in my flan love! It just doesn't have the sexiest of names like tiramasu or creme brule - but damn good.

two authors who have been consistently popular on booktube (and everywhere) and that I am just not interested in picking up. Funny how this sometimes goes. Probably will like their books as well. Ah well, too many books, too little time is my justification :D

So many authors like this! I've never read any Morrison, Dickens, Tolstoy, Coetzee or Mantel and the list is frankly longer than the list I have read - too many books, too little time indeed. I'll be happy if I can keep discovering and reading good stuff.

Did you read Ohio? I’ve just finished Deluge by Stephen Markley on audio. It’s very long. It took me two months to finish. A lot of characters. Multi voice cast. I’m still processing. Not sure if I liked it or not?

    • @ThePoptimist
      @ThePoptimist  Рік тому

Took me a moment to connect the dots as I've never read any Markley but his latest certainly seems like another ripped from the headlines dystopia - which is becoming quite common - which is probably a sign of something...
