In the early 20th century, a man named Martín Ramírez left his life in Mexico behind, seeking opportunity across the border in the United States. (Images shift to grainy footage of a crowded mental hospital ward.) But fate had a different path in store for him. Diagnosed as a catatonic schizophrenic, Martín spent most of his adult life confined within the walls of institutions.
Yet, within those walls, a unique artistic voice emerged. Using scraps and discarded materials, Martín Ramírez built a world of his own - a world filled with fantastical creatures, religious iconography, and memories of his homeland.
In this video, we explore the remarkable life and art of Martín Ramírez, a self-taught genius who found solace and expression in the most unimaginable places.

Better Help is trash - doesn't vet providers etc. Plenty of horror stories out there if you care to look. No shade on taking the sponsorship, get your bag and all, but people should know to steer clear of that sheisty shit.
Most mental health is trash imo. Most scientific progress is made by observation of different subjects. How can you really understand the experience if you haven't indulged in the mind state. Similar to being an expert of a landscape of a place you've never experienced.
@@raggaeldestro8609yeah. we have the responsibility to figure out things ourselves or we never will
Big oof on that Betterhelp sponsorship :/
Absolutely love your channel, but avoid BH like the plague. As others have mentioned, lots of drama.
Had never heard of this artist before but what a unique style.
The only "BH" you need to be doing successful business with is BH Ideas.
Bill Hitchert really, really, really knows how to strategize Social Media. 😎
Well, that's a shame he's taken sponsorship with BetterHelp...
My dog is counsellor at BetterHelp everybody loves him he so is so cuddly
@irwingrungerson2776 yes he is fluffy woof
about 15 years ago the Folk Art Museum had a huge showing of his work and was one of the best shows Ive remembered seeing
Very disappointing to see you taking a sponsorship from BetterHelp.
Grow up
betterhelp sucks but it’s hard to come by sponsorships even if he has a pretty big following, for companies 200k is not that much id say
BETTER HELP IS A SCAM
He’s one I haven’t encountered before but his work and story are right up my alley. Also I’m going to give you a cheeky reminder of a possible video on Hans Bellmer.
I like the genuine emotions depicted here. It gives us a glimpse of his life. I'm not trying to be insensitive with this statement, art gets better the more we suffer. There's a desperation to tell the story of the unseen. There is a quality that's hard to find otherwise. Some of Picasso's best works were during the war in my opinion. Guernica is a POWERFUL piece of work.
Art is Therapy.
I work with computers for a living, but interpreting/creating art is what makes me feel alive.
Surprise video I like this. I’ve never heard of Martin.
Thank you for making this. Muchas gracias!
Thanks for watching mate :) sorry again for my poor Spanish pronunciations 😅
@@BlindDweller No problemo, mi compadre. You're doing good work here. 👍🏽Glad to help out a little too.
Happy weekend! Make art not war. 🎨💪🏽😺
Art is THERAPY for me. I Have C-ptsd..and anxiety. I use art Daily..it helps me. And i advocate Anyone to find an outlet that isnt destructive to get those things OUT
absolutely… especially in this day and age when people are on the internet too much… good old fashioned art with real paint and real brushes is very freeing!❤
Love your content I've discovered and learned so much about artists I most likely would never have come across, was great seeing you in the video too. Nice to put a face to the voice. A handsome face too.
The Triumvirate of 20th Century "Outsider" Art: Henry Darger....Martin Ramirez....Adolf Wolffli. You're down one for two, B.D. Keep up the (as always) Outstanding work.
Thank you. I always appreciate the artists you introduce me to ❤
I like the variety of feelings I get, from experiencing the artists, this channel brings to us.
All this art is changing me, adding to me, lifting me, with each new example that stimulates my senses.
And, as a bonus, I learned that B.H. might have some "issues", that need looking into, before consulting them for help ;-)
Thanks for the great content!
The mind fails, yet art prevails. Amazing. Thank you!
This is a new artist to me! So thank you for that AND he is an outsider artist like I am. This is a great video. I'm going to see if he's got any books written about his art.
PS I finally got a website! So I'm going to email it to you. Maybe🙏 just maybe I will make it to your video one day.
I think he's got the point about BH. He didn't do it maliciously.
Love the channel
Such a fascinating video. Love all you do, Dweller. Keep up the good work.
Great video! Such an interesting story of a tormented soul with tons of talent. Love the background music too.
Thank you for making great informative videos about amazing artists and their important stories, you are doing great things the worlds needs. Thank you!
I love this guy. I discovered him in my art history class. His work reminds me heavily of art deco buildings in a way.
Why didn't his abandoned family have title to his work I wonder?
I've often wondered myself about this very issue, seeing how his Mexican family & kin could really have benefited from the additional income generated by sales of his work. It could very well have something to do with the maddening complexities of national & international copyright law. Or maybe it's just the rank unfairness of the damn world.
i wonder how voluntarily he abandoned his family. scares info on what he did to become diagnosed and hospitalized. who knows 🤷♀️
I really appreciate you commentary. It really helps me see what he was trying to convey.
Wow, his work is quite mesmerizing. I found myself wanting to look at every single line and count them. Very cool
Sweetheart, I know you're English, but you should know something so basic : A "J" in Spanish is pronounced with an "H" sound!!!
Hey man can i ask something.. Like 2 or 3 years ago when u were just starting out i was watching you. U had less then like 24k or something like that, didnt have much videos 4 or 5. I remember going every now and then to check did u post something new but one time when i went to look up ur channel it was just a blank page no vids at all. I remember checking maybe once more after a moth and same thing then i unsubscribed cuz i thought that u left yt. So my qestion is what happen back then? Did u left for bit or u never left cuz it was bug or something. Anyway im really glad that ure postinge vids now i missed ya :D
do hyman bloom next! he is my favourite artist of all time he’s work is mystic and beautiful
Hey, I’m from stockton, ca 😄 I was born at the same hospital that he was held in. Small world, I suppose
There seems to be a common theme among talented and prolific artists having mental instability. Schizophrenia is a terrible mental health disease but it is amazing to see the world through someone's eyes who has it, especially through their artistic expressions. They often say that art is inspired from extreme emotional distress or hardship so being confined to a padded cell would inspire wild imaginative stimulation.
Please do a video on A. Crowley!!!! would be VERY interesting…
Thank you for this wonderfully made review of an artist I knew nothing about.
I would love to see a video on Egon Schiele or Gustav Klimt at some point? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
i live in stockton but have never heard of him, it was like a jumpscare when i heard my city’s name
It’s funny I see the animals in the first piece as rats crawling over boards
The use of collage reminds me of Henry Darger, another self-taught artist.
his artwork reminds me of the cartoon King Rollo which I watched on the TV when I was little
Love this one BD! Thank you!❤
Aw you're welcome Carol! Hope you're well 🙂
Beautiful! Amazing
great channel!
Mr. Ramirez looks like film director Tarantino a bit

This reminds me the of artist from the French dispatch
Do you like Nick Blinko? Great ink and pen art
Dude you NEED to do a vid on Trevor brown. It'll be hard without getting demonized but ppl don't rlly talk abt him despite how influential his art has been on other artists and aesthetics in general. He's a creepy egotistical nut job but his art is undeniably amazing. He tries to be stealthy and pull the "quit sexualizing my art" while also opening discussing his creepy tendencies. He's not a good person but he creates some crazy good stuff. I wouldn't necessarily call it compelling, there's not a lot of subtlety but as a csa survivor it puts me in this weird headspace. Like, there's no doubt hes a creepy mofo but regardless I devour his works. Anywho, plz make a vid on him. Trevor brown (embarrassingly) and Yuko tatsushima are my two artists. You've covered Yuko, but haven't covered Trevor. He's pretty frowned upon due to the content of his works and I've frequently heard him referred to as "wasted potential". I don't necessarily think that's true though because I've found that the best pieces come from those who have serious trauma and/or mental issues and whatever Trevor's got going on is a serious mental issue. I don't find a lot of art fueled by a paraphilia that's genuinely interesting to look at. It all tends to be very surface level and very "Ah yes, genitals" but Trevor brown utilizes this beautiful juxtaposition of cutesy imagery and blatant fetishism that just is unparalleled. Yes, there's other amazing artists that paint sad big eyed girls with surrealistic themes, but none do it like him.
Well done. Thank you!
EXCELLENT! (you look really nice in your commercial. it was nice to see your face which matches your voice well.)
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! I’ve never seen his work before, stunningly beautiful. He truly was an artistic genius to say the very least. His story just makes everything even more mesmerizing and captivating.❤
Not sure if youve covered Joseph Yoakum yet. Would be interesting to see!
If you haven't done so already, can you maybe do a video on the art of David Tibet, hes on of my favourite abstract artists but his art usually gets overshadowed by his music from current 93
Showing some love!
Would you ever consider featuring directors on your videos. I love all art forms but I especially love film and I’ve wondered if you’d ever show movies or directors on your channel
I refer many art students to your site. Excellent stories of artists and their history. Very inspiring!
I have learned so much information and have been exposed to many more artists with your channel. Excellent. 🎉
21:06 mowlka jet lol
yessss one of the best!
Jalisco (Ha-lee-sco) ❤

Please cover Gertrude Abercrombie too! Her works are lovely!
I think is a good moment to recomend the artist Hannelore Baron ( which also use collage)
You inspire me further to pursue my art history degree, thank you ❤
🖤👏
Great video, thanks. The initial "J" in Spanish is pronounced as an "H". Ha-lees-ko.
Thanks for the heads up! My Spanish is terrible at best haha
thats good video right here
Intriguing!
I see people are mentioning the sponsorship,. I don't worry about that as i can view it through an alternative app skipping all ads. Try that, good luck. Great channel, subscribed today❤
