  • Have you ever wondered why your favorite fandoms might not have the greatest writing? Sometimes breaking all the rules can lead to something more beloved than a perfectly crafted piece of media. Today, I dive into what I call "sandbox theory" and break down some good examples of media that made its mark by being imperfect, such as Harry Potter, Homestuck, and Alanis Morissette's album "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie."
Huge thanks to my patrons, Jonaya Riley, Tev Linsey, Stinky, Rosalie Ross, and Jeremy M!

Oh. That's why Warrior Cats is the way it is. Gotcha.

This is a great theory, most of my favorite fantasy settings are sandbox worlds that were introduced to me with stories that were complete and without plot holes but fell apart after retcons. And now I can't stop thinking about the ways they could have done it better.

Oh I had no idea moomin was that old! That's really cool, I'm glad it's been able to stick around for so long!

They Might Be Giants’ album “Flood” is an absolute sandbox.

Oh I love flood! I grew up listening to it all the time! Funny thing, my songwriting professor in undergrad wrote a book analyzing the music theory behind Flood. They’re doing all kinds of wild things with meter and modes and unusual instrumentation, so there’s tons to pick apart.

@@articulatelyComposed that’s so cool! Great term, btw. I do a lot of writing coaching online and I’ve tried to explain to people a lot about why really-not-very-good original material inspires so much fic, about how potential with a lot of imperfections is so inspiring, and I’m definitely picking up the term sandbox, so thank you!

I was almost surprised you didn't say Warrior Cats - it's somehow both the worldbuilding one AND the plotholes one at once lol

I probably should have mentioned warrior cats, though honestly it didn’t cross my mind because I was never in the warrior cats fandom myself.

Oh huh! Encanto did seem to have way more of a Fandom(tm) than pretty much any other disney movie, so that does make sense!
