  • Pete Fountain was 49 years old when he did this concert at Wolf Trap in 1979. The first half of the concert was Pete Fountain and the second half was Al Hirt. This portion is Pete's show and his band. Enjoy!!!

The guitarist was Lloyd Ellis. He was with Pete's band for about 10-13 years. He passed away in 1994. Piano was Earl Vuivovich, who was with Pete forevermost. I remember him being with Pete since at least 1973. Drums is Charlie Lodice, Bass is Oliver Stick Felix, Trumpet - Jimmy Weber, Trombone, Jim Duggan was first trombone, Tom Geckler is in the middle and on the end is Mike Genevieve. I am Lloyd's step-daughter and grew up with these guys. Music was amazing and I was truly lucky to grow up to all this.

And we are lucky today to have you share this and experience a small part of what you had every day. Yes. I would say such a lucky girl.

There have been a lot of clarinet players in the music field, but Pete in the only one I could listen to for hours. Nobody played that "licorice stick" like he did. He could turn any musical song into a great number. He was always my favorite and thanks to you tube I can cherish memories of his many concerts. Rest in Peace Pete - You earned keep. - Joe Cimino

There are clarinet players and then there is Pete Fountain! I was a young teenager starting on clarinet in the 70's and my mother and father used to let me stay up late to watch him perform on the tonite show with Johnny Carson! His performances were incredible to say the least! And the audience always packed in and went crazy when he played! I knew even as a kid that Pete was on his own plateau far above everyone else at that time and for that matter- forever! Pete- You Rock! - Bill Shine

+bill shine Y'know I'll tell you something, I was born in 1956 and in the 70's I couldn't have cared less about New Orleans Jazz. BUT while watching Merv Griffin with my folks one day this guy by the name of Pete Fountain came on and JUST BLEW MY MIND! I never forgot his appearances on those talk shows, so much so that even though I hadn't seen Pete on TV since that time, while watching the New Orleans based TV show Treme I caught sight of a fella sitting on the back of a trolly car as the camera panned past, I suddenly realized it was Pete Fountain! I backed the footage up and sure as hell it WAS, he was on the trolly as the sponsor of his Half Fast Walking Club. That lead me here and other Pete F vids... wanna hear something ridiculous? Someone on a vid from the Tonight Show with Carson commented that basically Pete was alright but he was no Artie Shaw!!!! Artie Shaw was a very good clarinetist but there is NO ONE that plays the licorice stick like ol' Pete.

@@queenofyeay With my full respect to you, I think is taste, it is subjective.
There were other amazing musicians, you know Mr. Artie Shaw, Mr. Benny Goodman, etc.
Mr. Pete Fountain also very brillant.

Superb!!! Same year that I first saw him live. The best at his craft! A lifetime of training, exposure, and experience - all given for our enjoyment!! Shaw, Goodman, and others were extremely brilliant artists in their own lanes and were Pete’s heroes, but even they never achieved Pete’s distinctive sound or innovative ideas with a group, that was all him, probably never to be replicated again. Pete added to their immense legacies carrying the ball further than probably any clarinetist will ever achieve again. Especially representing New Orleans and traditional music! The clarinet has superstars, but this man blazed a long trail with absolute fire at a time when people thought the instrument had peaked in popular music and left the stage with the decline of the big bands in American living rooms. His appearances on the Welk show and later nightly New Orleans club shows set the stage for this master at his craft! Just look at his late night talk show performances - one of Johnny Carson’s favorite musical guests on the Tonight Show with 56 stunning appearances! A true legend that everyone should appreciate.

I saw this entire show with these same musicians at Pete's club at the New Orleans Hilton in 1979! I was a 19 year old aspiring clarinetist at the time. You knew Pete Fountain was on stage when the curtain opened as the band played Clarinet Marmalade -Because there was nobody else in the world that could play clarinet licks like that- He clears the field and is untouchable within the first few begining bars of this song. I also remember hearing this same phenomenal arrangement of High Society - Pete plays tribute to an early New Orleans jazz clarinetist- Alphonse Picou- who wrote "the" clarinet jazz improvisation solo to High Society- He plays it a couple of times during this arrangement. This arrangement of High Society was so tremendous that everyone was standing and applauding before the band had finished. It was like- Do you really believe what we just heard! I remember I had chills up my spine! Who could ever Imagine someone playing clarinet could have this effect on people - Bill Shine
