Especially considering how futile the whole effort is. They did not have completely pyrolyzed charcoal (you won't get jumping flames off pure charcoal since there's nothing that readily vaporizes before combusting,) but pure charcoal has zero flavor, it's just carbon and some minerals that don't really combust at the temperatures involved here. You'd get the same effect cooking hot dogs over propane, maybe adding in a piece of wood for smoke flavor, but that's not necessary since hot dogs are already smoked.

I make steel drums if charcoal from driftwood couple times every year, if properly made 1/8th charing container of firewood + the woodgas should be enough to char everything inside.
      Tip 1: use DRY wood
Tip2: pack fairly well but with vents
Tip 3: make a "chimney" around the container "funneling" the heat and burning gasses so they suround the container
tip 4 make the vent hole at bottom and make a valve to regulate/shut of flow of gasses, too fast and it will not char through to slow and process wi l stop.
If properly chared it has 0 flames and is black all through, any "brown" = not finished

Yea, just dig a hole, throw a bunch of logs in there, light it on fire, and cover it in dirt, come back like 8 hours later and you got charcoal. Or optionally if you have firebricks you can make a coke oven which produces the charcoal much more efficiently and can make coal coke too, with creosote oil as a byproduct for all your track making needs.

All these people saying they aren't clear or have good highs, they're totally wrong about it once you've hit up an EQ to flatten out the response. These things compare to my studio headphones (CAD MH320's) with next to no issue short of the battery only being 6 hours. Not long enough for a good day's session, but more than long enough for me to enjoy Spotify at work with only one at a time.

It's interesting that Jason mentioned Minecraft because a lot of tech mods go really deep into the chemistry and physics stuff typically very oversimplified in vanilla Minecraft. Part of the reason I clicked here, in addition to wanting to catch up, was because pyrolysis (which is the name for what's going on!) is one of those topics. Many mods will have you dealing with the byproducts and doing stuff with them. It's neat. It's cool to see something I've done in a game done in real life, haha

8:29 The way a coal starter works is by using convection and an updraft to fuel a fire. Light a small fire underneath using news paper or a sheet of paper towel soaked in oil. As the bottom catches fire and an ember is started on the bottom, the heat rises and creates a draft pulling air from the bottom of the chimney to the top. As more coals catch the hotter the draft is as it travels.

That’s basically how we make charcloth, we put something that’s 100% cotton into an altoids tin and cut a couple of holes into it and put it in some hot ashes, or in the bottom of a fire so the cloth doesn’t catch, and you let it set for a few minutes and take it out. But with the altoids tin you have to cover the holes until it’s cooled down so it doesn’t catch and burn out

Mesquite wood doesn't come in a bag out here in west Texas. I grub mesquite. Last 4 or 5 years. We need a mobile charcoal maker you can throw whole tress in. And recycle the gas as a fuel to cook the mesquite. Use a bic lighter to light the gas it works and will stay lit.

if you water bubble the output gas, you should be getting ch4 methane at low heat, and h2 hydrogen (and co carbon monoxide) if high heat
