How NOT to Change a Harley Tire (Could You Do Better?)

  • I attempted to change the tire on my Harley Davidson using a Rabaconda tire changer, which was sent to me for review. Unfortunately, the process did not go as planned. My Harley’s cruiser tire, which includes an inner tube, proved too challenging for the Rabaconda. The risks of damaging my wheel or popping the tire were just too high. Ultimately, I decided to take it to the dealer and paid $130 to have it professionally done.
    I want to be fair to Rabaconda-their tire changer might work great for other types of bikes and tires, but in my scenario, it wasn’t the right tool for the job. If you’re considering doing your own tire changes, especially with inner tubes, this video might save you some time and trouble.

    Haha, the learning curve. Appreciate the shout out, Fam! 🤙🏾 Totally get it, but don’t give up on the Rabaconda! I struggled with it like you and also tore the inner tube. I got my working time down to 10 minutes a tire now. I agree that they make it look incredibly easy.

      No doubt! I will certainly give it a shot again in the future.

    I just watched one of the first videos you did on that bike. And I asked if you still had the bike.. and now I see that you do! I have that rattling gas cap you mentioned. I like your videos and yes I hope to see John Maxwell back also someday 👍🏻

    I bought my Rabaconda machine last season and have changed a few tires since then. It's the best garage system I have found by far. There is a learning curve for sure, but now it only takes a few minutes to change a tire. And yes, it is a bit trickier on a tube tire, but still very doable. I've got a couple vids on my Rabaconda in use if interested.

    Oh man there's no way I would ever attempt to change out the actual tire myself!! Way too much effort for sure and your video shows why, especially when you factor in how often you have to change out your tires!! Now I have removed my front tire from my 2015 Breakout and took it to the local dealership for and let them put my new tire on. I believe I only paid $65 (1 hour labor cost) for that. I'll find out soon because rear is coming due for a change. I buy a purpose built device for doing the alignment and tension of the drive belt for when I changed out my rear sprocket to a different size and that was nice to have. This video is just why I love your channel! You give honest reviews about real gear and will own up to mistakes if they happen, so refreshing!

      Yeah certainly a lot more goes into the rear but still not too difficult to remove from the bike. Thanks for the long time support of the channel, I appreciate it.

    like you said, seems like a well engineered product.
    But once you get onto a wire spoke motorcycle wheel and / or inner tube…..nightmare potential.

      Definitely a really well engineered product. I felt bad that I couldn't "get it".

    Don't give up, takes me 20 minutes give or take to change tube tyres...high ply adventure tyres as well.
    Make sure both sides of tyre are in the channel of the rim.

    You didn't get the opposite side of the tire down into the wheel well deep enough to allow the bead to easily slide over the rim. Yes, it's a bltch, but totally doable. I just use old time tire irons to change mine. Both motorcycle and car.

    I like doing a lot of work myself and often my time is more valuable than the $$ it takes to have the dealer do it. I’d rather spend the day riding or doing something else than take my own wheel off and cus and throw stuff in the garage. lol

    $130 for both, is that one hour labor rate at your local dealer?

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  18 днів тому

      Yes I am guessing that is just the 1 hour minimum labor rate at the dealer.

  • @ejdtm

    Should only be 50 bucks if you bring the wheel in for them to change the tire.

    • @GearsGadgets
      @GearsGadgets  18 днів тому

      I would be curious to know what others have paid for similar service but at the time I was told $130 and they would do it while I waited. I wasn't really in a haggling or calling around kind of mindset. It was "$130 to make all of your problems disappear" and I said "take my money". Loading everything back into my truck and driving 20 minutes further across town wouldn't have been worth saving $80 to me at the time especially if the other dealer said I would have to come back to pick it up tomorrow.

      Harley dealership…they charged you for one hour of service…normal.
      That said, most any local indy shop and even Cycle Gear charges around $30 to $50 for a tire change.

    • @jamesturner7661
      @jamesturner7661 18 днів тому

      I was going to say the same… $40- $50 usually if you bring in just the wheel. I’ve done my own before and said the same thing. Screw it, take my money. Well worth it to avoid the struggle bus….

    • @ejdtm
      @ejdtm 18 днів тому

      @@GearsGadgets i’m starting to see dealers of all manufacturers require you to buy the tire from them. But independents usually do it in Massachusetts for 50 bucks.

      When I took mine in to a local Indy back a couple years ago before I started charging my own tires I was charged 30 bucks to mount and balance one tire/wheel.
