I find it odd, almost bizarre, that so many critics have suggested that I am promoting candy bars or work for the Hershey's company (or maybe my real name is Hershey). So let me say it as plainly as I know how to say it: I am not promoting candy bars!!!! Any diabetic who eats candy bars is either totally ignorant or living in a state of denial. But what is obvious from this little experiment is that fruit in general and bananas specifically can, in some cases, raise blood sugar just as high or higher than candy bars. My blood sugar meter is not a liar, nor does it have even a trace of dietary bias!
Because it's CHOCOLATE. Ive known for years that chocolate does not raise my BS as much as some fruits so I eat chocolate. It does not really help us much since we are not going to substitute chocolate for while fruits. And bananas dont raise my BS as high is it does yours so I eat them as well. Try exercising and you will be able to eat a LOT more foods than you could before.
There IS no bad food unless it is actually toxic to you, and people can react differently to the same food. But we Can eat too much of one type of food. Just as most Americans do with carbohydrates today. Genius's started cutting fat out of the American diet in the 50s and increased carbohydrate consumption to make up the difference. It was way easier getting people to eat carbohydrate encrusted... well, pretty much everything than eating more vegetables as we should have. Way more profitable also, what a surprise. All this being done in the belief that cutting fats would decrease heart disease. AHHHhhhhhhhhhhh..., excuse me. What about all the additional carbs? What are those little babies gonna do to the human body? Because nature doesn't work that way on her own. Mankind is one smart little monkey, but it was a swing-and-a-miss this time. My mother bought Oleo when I was a kid because they were told it was more healthy than eating butter. Butter! Not much better than butter when used in the proper amount. Although I do miss a big fresh piece of black pumpernickel with a 1/4" thick slab of cold hard butter covering it, maybe even hanging off the edges a little. Don't Judge ME! That's how I got to 308 lbs. at my most buoyant and 5' 10". I could and did eat with abandon when I was young, and now I am paying for it. Eating a little chocolate can actually be beneficial. A little chocolate, like 1 tbsp of chips if that's your thing. There is no bad food when eaten in proper proportions. Proper. All you old people that remember what the original McDonalds Hamburger looked like raise your hand. The adult hamburger, fries, and drink were fewer calories then than the matching kid's meal today. We have been taught to eat too much, it's as simple as that. People born in or that lived through the Great Depression started that, "Clean-up your plate" or the "There are kids starving in China" nonsense. Then portion size exploded because of the fast food industry. Today, when people feel hunger pangs it is nothing more than their brain telling them that they haven't overeaten as much as they "normally" do. In the past 96 days, I have dropped my A1C from 10.1 to 6.4 by trying to keep my blood sugar as low as I can get it for as long as I can keep it there. It was either make changes or start injecting insulin... most probably for the rest of my life. I started checking my blood sugar in the morning upon rising and two hours after consuming calories. I have logged all blood sugar readings in an accurate food diary that shows both calories and carbs. All this has amounted to weight loss of over 60 lbs. so far. And fast too! Yes, yes, I know 5 lbs. a week is too fast, or at least so my nutritionist told me this morning... with a smile. Even she is impressed with the numbers. My average calorie consumption has been between 600 and 700 calories a day. Sometimes less but I never went over 1000. I am not saying this is what everyone should do but it is working for me. This is what I suggest for everybody with diabetes and/or that want to lose weight. Set a strict calorie limit, and then drop it by 100 calories. This ain't a car lots so don't raise the limit before you subtract the 100. No cheating. Keep a daily food diary and track calories and carbs. by using Google. After no time you won't have to ask how many calories in an egg. Take suppliments. Eat what you like as long as you eat no more than 200 to 300 calories at a time. You will find that a single tbsp of honey can stop hunger pangs. Spread out the calories to control hunger. Eat the widest variety of foods that you can. Learn that hunger pangs aren't a bad thing. They probably mean your blood sugar is low and that you are losing weight. Wait until you are hungry, really hungry, maybe even your stomach is growling some, then set a timer for 10 mins. and do something to take your mind off it. When the timer goes off if you aren't hungry then don't eat anything. Many people are using various fasting lengths When you do eat to stop hunger pangs eat small amounts and eat slowly, take your time and let your body and brain catch up to each other. Drink water, don't go to sleep with a full stomach, eat whole foods, yadda, yadda, yadda.... we all know what needs to be done. Monitoring blood sugar worked for me because it has taught me what the numbers of calories and carbs.are that I had been eating, I had no idea how much sugar and excess calories I was making my body deal with. - Nucleic Acids. - The nucleic acids are DNA and RNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid and ribonucleic acid, respectively. ... - Proteins - Carbohydrates - Lipids All you have to do is balance those and don't eat excess calories. Unless your body simply can't function as it should anymore, such as Type I diabetes, this should make changes in the right direction. Listen to your doctor and make your stomach talk to ya. You'll feel better for it.
Estimate of the glucose content of the bananas may be erroneous: raw or green bananas have negligible sugar (for example, try the same experiment with raw bananas) , whose content increases from fermentation as the banana ripens. A greenish yellow firm banana will have lower content then the real ripe one, like here. So ideally, if you want to eat it, eat one, which is firm greenish yellow. Do some exercise after eating it, like a stationary bicycle for 100 Cal, and the blood glucose rise will be minimal. Fruits are simply candies growing on plants and trees!
It’s because the candy bar has fat in it and the fat slowed the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. The banana doesn’t so the sugar rushed into the bloodstream much faster. Would have been interesting to see the results from a continuous glucose monitor, to see if the candy bar kept you elevated much longer.
Thank you so much, I was diagnosed with type 2, three weeks ago, I went home he cleaned my fridge out of all the junk no food, found you online and Dr. Fung, and Dr Ken, I listen to you every evening, I love how you do the test and talk about certain foods... Thanks for breaking this all down, you have been such a big help, my doctor didn't tell me anything I did everything on my own... I walk twice a week and started Tai Chi at our community park... Also twice a week.... Yes I have lost 9 lbs.....I feel so good and am happy..... Thank you for all you do...I love your wife, she is beautiful and very funny, she makes me laugh.....
As a newly diagnosed diabetic your channel is gold. I feel bad at how many times you "take one for the team" to educated your audience. I am subscribed and will recommend this channel to all I know who have diabetes and with those who are not so they can make better choices with food to possibly ward off diabetes in their futures. It would be nice if others did these videos an you shared them on your channel so that you don't always flood your body with sugars in these contrast videos.
I’m not a diabetic but I had a blood test about 6 or 7 months ago and my fasting glucose was 107. My doctor didn’t seem concerned at all because my other numbers were good. He explained my triglycerides were very low and also said I don’t have any other signs of prediabetes. But I decided to change my eating habits just to be safe. I lowered my carb intake, stopped taking in sugar, and only drink water. Consequently I lost a lot of body fat which is great. Still Just adjusting to the healthy eating lifestyle. It’s difficult but I’m learning that we eat to live, we don’t live to eat.
Same, Louis! My doctor also said it was fine. She said “maybe eat less bananas”, when I stated my blood sugar went up to 210 after my daily morning oats with a banana. Consistently waking up with blood sugar in the prediabetic range. Listen to your gut. Even if your blood sugar was still “fine”, why keep eating like you did when you know it will sooner or later mess you up. Hope you are doing well still!
My blood sugar was a little high they said no big deal then they checked my A1c and it showed I was a diabetic it was 9.7 it's supposed to be lower than 5.7. I chained to eating LOW carbs an for now I'm pre diabetic I'm AR 5.8 I'm getting there.
Beat Diabetes! Don't listen to the detractors. You're doing a good service here to people who are trying to do something about their diabetes. Thank you for your helpful videos.
Yeah. I agree. I honestly think people easily miss the point you are clearly making in the video. This is incredibly informative because I'm at the stage in my diabetes where I'm trying to start watching the fruit I eat and how much I can safely consume. this is a really great video and honestly its just like all of your other videos. I send these to just about everybody I know. You do amazing work and please know you are making such a huge difference in this world
I weighed 320 lbs and was prediabetic at 35 years old. I cut soda and fried food..then eventually red meat and went on a high fiber diet with exercise of 30 minutes a day. I'm now 43 222 lbs and my blood sugar is around 105 after meals and 80 to 90 in the morning fasting..

CHENTE TV: How can you be on a "high fiber" diet while cutting carbs (sugar)? Most foods high in fiber also have a lot of carbs. And red meat doesn't contain any sugar.
You have no clue how blessed I I’m to have found your channel!! I’m newly diabetic and after listening to you I have had great great results!! I have a million and one question I love love to hear back from u
Incorporate a full circuit of high repetition resistance training 5 days per week exercising every major muscle group. This will improve insulin sensitivity and within 90 days you will be free of type 2 diabetes. Diet has a lot to do with it as well, so eliminate all offending foods that raise blood sugars. Basically ALL white carbohydrate foods and sugars along with ALL fruit except for berries. Most diabetics can do well with berries, like blueberries.
@@regalsurvivor3418 actually older videos seem more technical and informative. People in my generation are very “raw” in their vlog style videos in comparison in my opinion.
As a doctor looking after patients with diabetes I commend your efforts in self research. Different patients with diabetes respond differently with similar foods. Your idea of self discovery is the best way of ensuring what you should be eating. This should be done by as many diabetics as possible. Self reasearch and discovery is the way to go.
Beat Diabetes! - Yes, I do the exact same tests. It was the only way to know how my body responds to food. If diet soda has no sugar, why does my BS skyrocket after drinking some? They lie to us. Corporations are evil. Why does my BS spike higher eating wheat bread compared to white bread? And uncouth people tell you wheat bread is good for you. It’s not good for me. 1/2 apple, ok - whole apple, not good. Peas, can not eat, not good for BS. I can eat all the steak I want, no effect on BS. What I’ve learned is to test, it is the only way. The scientific method is what I was taught in school as an engineer. Too bad my doctor does not understand this. How does one know if you do not test and there are no visible manifestations. I felt like telling her to go back to U of Florida and ask for your money back because you got cheated with your education and you haven’t learned much since. At my school there are two Probability and statistics courses. One for scientists and engineers, the other for business in premed students. Guess which one is for boneheads.
Dennis thank you so much for undergoing all those tests to teach the rest of us the benefits and dangers of different foods instead of just lecturing like others. I am not a Christian but I think you represent real Christian values in your own way for the benefit of humanity. God bless you.
I'm a newly diagnosed diabetic and have been recently watching your videos to help me out. I really find your videos very informative and helpful! Thank you so much!!!
Please do not rush to judgment! The man is trying to help inform people on how diabetes works. What we eat can make blood sugar rise. Some blinded commenter must understand that this is a test on one man! Everyone system is different! The point is one must be careful of what and how much you eat! It is information. Do your own TEST! Dennis, Thank you for your test! It is a service that help us learn more about diabetes.
@@beatdiabetes3 I have an answer for you. The best way for diabetics to measure the Blood Sugar is the very first thing in the morning while still fasting...That number will tell you if what you ate the day before was sending your blood sugar through the roof....Since your Blood sugar the day after you ate the bananas was also 106, then you would assume that the natural sugar from the bananas was assimilated by the body better than the candy bars...that of course if the measure you got the day after the candy bars (While fasting) would have been greater than 106.
Whenever you eat a high amount of sugar you need to do some exercise so as not to let the pancreas release insulin. The release of insulin wipes out your energy and makes you tired. One thing I do, if I'm still sitting around, is raise and lower my arms repeatedly, roll them, walk around the house, anything to keep moving. Keep the muscles working to turn the sugar into energy.
You’re right that there is always going to be surprises. One day my blood sugar numbers improve so the next day I eat the same things but my sugar is higher. I think other factors come in to play, such as amount of exercise, quality of sleep and stress.
The candy bars each had 7 grams of saturated fat and 2 grams of protein. The 14 grams of fat and 4 grams of protein slowed the spike in blood sugar. The bananas were all carbs with no fat and no protein so the carbs were converted to glucose right away.
5 months my hba1c was 12.2 but ur videos gave me idea of low carbs now my hba1c is 6.5 still trying my best achieve lower I am so glad I found your videos, keep it up and keep motivated 🙏🙏
Great video! Some of these people who comment barely have two brain cells to rub together. Good grief people. As a diabetic myself, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video, it was great info to know. And please ignore these dipsticks that don't understand the simple point you were obviously making. Keep up the great work!
My physical showed me with a blood sugar of 102 and I was deemed a diabetic. I had eaten pancakes with maple syrup, orange juice, and a peanut butter toast before the physical. My A1c was 68. A bit high. I cut out carbs, and filled up on meat. My blood sugar has stayed below 70 and my A1c is in the 50's along with I lost 100 pounds. Give me that Atkins diet over any vegan crap any day. Oh, and my cholesterol went down too. 240 to 180.
We are all here to learn and may be at different stages and have learned information in different places, so be patient with us. I will concur, he is awesome and a treasure!
I only want to add one thought about the bananas vs the candy bars. If you are normally eating low carb as a rule and then you hit yourself with 2 bananas, or candy bars, the spike will be super high. By the second day, when you had the candy bars, you would have had more insulin floating around in your system after the assault with the bananas, so the candy bar spike was not quite as high. I bet if you had eaten the candy bars on the first day, the result would have been similar to the bananas on the first day. In other words, whatever carbs you eat on the first day after a low carb diet, will give you a bigger spike. By the second day, with more insulin, you body manages it slightly better, but after several days of assaulting yourself with sugar, your insulin resistance increases again and slowly the spikes will increase, as does the morning fasting glucose. So what this means is, candy bars are not better than fruit - but fruit is JUST AS BAD AS candy bars when it comes to the damage sugar can do to our bodies, especially once we become insulin resistant. And just because our blood sugar might be good still, doesn't mean it's not affecting us - it is - it's causing insulin spikes, which you can't easily test for at home. That's another really interesting discovery - looking at how insulin and blood glucose are affected by various carbs - in one study of chick peas vs whole wheat bread, while the blood sugar seems to remain in the healthy range, you could see when the test subjects ate chickpeas, their insulin spiked to 9, whereas when they ate whole wheat, their insulin spiked to 20! And that's all going on behind the scenes. For years and years, long before you start to see it in the blood sugar. The last thing I have to say is it is good to check your blood sugar at the 30 min mark, as well as the traditional 1 hour and 2 hour marks, but also, if the carbs are combined with fat (like apple pie and cream or pizza) then check at 3 hours as well there is a phenomenon known as the "pizza effect" of high fat and carbs together causing the blood sugar spike to take longer than the usual 30 mins to one hour. By two hours your blood sugar should be back to base (around 70 / 4.0mmol) but after pizza, you might find it's still high 3 hours later while at 30 mins to 1 hour, it looked okay.
Thanks. Interesting. It would be really great if they published more of the insulin index instead of the glycemic index since sometimes a food can have a reasonable glycemic index but a bad or very bad insulin index.
@@travelinggirl6681 Thank you for taking the time to thank me! I have more thoughts about this topic after reading my previous comment. I think fruit, in theory, should of course be completely fine in moderation (perhaps when seasonably available only) for those who are metabolically healthy and who are physically active. But if we have become insulin resistant (which is the majority of us these days), that's when you can consider that even one apple a day can, for some of us, be enough to prevent our bodies from burning its stored fats (which means you won't reverse fatty liver while you are eating even that one apple a day). So I think, provided a person does not have signs of insulin resistance, there is no reason why you shouldn't enjoy fruit every now and then or even a little bit each day. But if you are diabetic, it is definitely helpful to avoid fruit just like you would avoid other starchy carbs and sugars for long enough to get your insulin sensitivity back and heal some of the damage that may have been done from the high sugar/insulin environment.
Wow. No candy and no sugar for me! Thank you for being a Guinea pig for us. Most appreciated, but be careful abusing your body! We love you and want you healthy. Kind sir!
That's what you took from this video? You can eat anything you want. The key is portion and combinations. Science is just starting to unravel the complexities. Don't listen to nutritionists or doctors whom aren't up to date on the latest studies.
Thank you for all you and your wife do. My mother was diabetic and lost her vision and had her leg amputated. This was while she was under a doctor's care. I am deathly afraid of diabetes and your videos have taught me so much about this disease. I bought your book "60 Ways to Fight Diabetes" and will follow it to the letter. Thank you for all of your help. I look forward to each and every video.
Dennis, I have to tell you this. I went to my endocrinologist yesterday and usually my morning fasting glucose is anywhere between 102 to 129. Well, I had very bad sinus issues that morning and took an over the counter sinus liquid capsule. When I got to the doctor she took my sugar and it was 186. She said, if you need to take it occasionally, it,s not a problem. I said, no thank you I don,t think I,ll be taking this anymore. She said we all experience life and sometimes you need to take something. I said I think I,ll go the natural way for my sinuses. She is a great doctor, but I don,t know why she would think thats not a big problem?
Thank you for subjecting yourself to this. I may try something similar but take 1,000 mg of Berberine & Ceylon Cinnamon with one test and then without; just to see if there is a difference.
The fat in the Hershey bars was most likely slowing the release of blood sugar. One strategy is to increase your intake of good fats (nuts in particular...eg. 6 almonds) to help control blood sugar release in a meal. And as you say the two bananas probably had more carbohydrates. One other tip is to make sure at least half the volume of what you eat is non-starchy vegetables every time you eat.
my guess is that the candy bars are lab tested and measured to contain exactly that amount of carbs. those bananas look extra EXTRA large, which likely contain way more carbs than one might think or guess. clearly no way of measuring that exact banana unless you are in a lab. but, here's the thing. regardless of this, what is failed to be mentioned is his lean physique. why you ask? because EVERYONE will get that spike from either of these foods, no matter if they are diabetic or not. why does this make a difference? ask Dennis if his body was able to lower his glucose levels by itself or did he need to take insulin? this is exactly my point. you should be measuring after 2 or 3 hours, not 1 hour. after 1 hour, the body is still processing the glucose, so of course it will still be high unless hes burned it off through vigorous exercise. i dont think Denis is highly insulin resistant that much with him being slim and lean, if he is Type 2. morbidly obese people can be heavily insulin resistant because of the comorbidity, in which the body does not lower the blood sugar without help from medication. they key is to maintain 100mg/dl or less in glucose levels all the time, meaning no spikes, and low carb seems to do that. problem is for me, that i did not take into account that the large amount of fat intake would clog my arteries, so now i have a 2nd diseases to worry about, from what my cardiologist told me.
@@BobRooney290 Dennis doesn't take any meds. And in regards to the spikes, healthy people don't spike higher than 140 no matter what they eat. I tested around ten people in my family and friends and they didn't spike. It's just a matter of the degree of the insulin resistance for everybody. But I think there are more mechanisms involved in the blood sugar regulation beside insuline .
I wanted to thank you so much for your information you make available to the world. I have in 3 months lowered ALL my blood work numbers from A1c to cholesterol, etc. Dr. Is amazed and has never ever seen these kind of results in all of her years of practicing medicine. I just want to tell the world that you can control your health by what you eat. I'd love to share with you. Thor.
But the candy bar is also high in fat which slows the absorption of the sugars... bananas are almost entirely carbs and sugar. I'd be curious if the candy bar KEPT blood sugar high for longer?
You're right. I didn't think of it at the time, but someone else pointed out about the fat in the candy bar, and that most likely was the reason for the lower number.
Beat Diabetes! I appreciate the experiment, but you may want to consider removing this video so as not to mislead diabetics to think eating a candy bar is better than two bananas. There's actually been people to REVERSE diabetes with a fruit based diet. Look up "the mindful diabetic"
I am aware that there are people who say they have been healed of diabetes based on fruit based diets. However I am not convinced that this is the best way to overcome diabetes. The only way you could be sure that any diet is truly healing you of diabetes is to not only be able to see good scores on glucose tests and A1c tests, but also to have your insulin levels checked. I would venture to guess that in some of these fruit healing situations they may be walking around with insulin double, triple, or five times the normal levels. And even if your blood sugar is close to normal, if your insulin levels are high, you are damaging your body. As for the experiment, it speaks for itself. Whatever conclusions people want to draw from it, the fact remains that bananas clearly raised my blood sugar significantly higher than candy bars. Also, in one of my earliest videos I did a blood sugar test with a diabetic named Richard, but in this case we tested fruits vs vegetables. The vegetables raised his blood sugar to 116, but the fruit drove it to 199. In that case there wasn't much fat in either the fruit or the veggies, but clearly the fruit was far more efficient at raising blood sugar.
Beat Diabetes! You don't have to believe fruit is the best way to heal diabetes, this is still misleading to viewers since you didn't address or point out the fat in the candy bars. When spreading information about health and nutrition on youtube, I think it's the UA-cam's responsibility to make sure not to aren't mislead others. Hopefully your viewers will read the comments ♡ with love.
I was talking to an acquaintance in my local dog park this morning about my pre-diabetes when he mentioned that the amount blood glucose levels rise is not just a matter of how many carbs you eat, but also a matter of what you eat with the carbs. He claimed that if you eat fat along with the carbs it reduces the blood sugar rise. If he is right it may explain the results of your test. A banana has .4 grams of fat and a Hershey's bar has 35.7 grams or nearly 90 times more fat.
Totally true. I'm assuming this guy is type 2 and still producing insulin so the fat slowing down the absorption of the chocolate gave his slow body "time" to deal with the glucose uptake whereas the bananas are assimilated faster. Hence a more drastic spike.
I wonder if you would've had the same results had you conducted a test with an unripened banana, mostly green. The more ripe a banana is the higher it is on the glycemic index. When we see a banana turning dark, that is the fruit directly turning into fructose. Pure sugar!
This is an excellent way to test the foods we eat. I’ve started doing the same timed test on different foods. I’ve also waited a couple of weeks and tried it again with the same foods to see what would happen. Thank you
I just wanted to thank you, for all the worked that you do, and that approach that you take in explaining, in how it makes so much sense, how to go about this issue. God Bless you and your Love Ones Thank you .
Thank you Dennis, you are my hero ,you are above those Dr's (like my self) who didn't give enough emphasis on low carb diet, I was doing it on and off in the past but my A1C has not been changing , always 6 to 6.4, finally I run to your channel and subscribed, watch every day and follow my low carb diet constantly, I got my A1C today, guess what 5. 3, in the past I lowered it to 4.5 but went back to 6 when I stopped watching my food..I'm happy to see that I lowered it once again and would like to say Thank you for making a difference, for letting us know the reality with out being tired, I don't think I will go back to that bad reading again as long as you keep posting this educational videos and I keep watching them , Thank you kindly!
I've read this elsewhere on the web. Eventually, I found this video and I personally belive this to be true. Thank you for making me think again... ! 💐🙏✍️
I’ve been eating a ton of fruit. ☹️. I don’t test and I know I should. I’m hoping I get encouraged by watching your videos. Thank you for your service. 🤗
Thank you for this very informative video. I would have liked to see the results after two hours. My doctor told me to not bother to check my blood sugar until two hours after I eat.
Not really a good test. If you reversed the order by eating the hershey bars first they would have shot your blood sugar through the roof, then the next day, the bananas would not have risen as high. The reason is because you ate the bananas after eating very low carbs, then when you ate the candy bars, your body was already geared up for high carb and handled it much better. run the test again but in reverse order and you will get the results you first expected.
I realize this is an old video, but it is still very relevant. I have seen a similar test of an apple with a donut. I might suggest that the reason the candy bar had lower blood spike than the banana was due to the slower spikes from chocolate. It very well may have gotten as high as the banana if you followed up with a 2nd test 30 minutes later. Chocolate has that effect. Thank you for your great content.
I have been following some of your videos, I use caution with what I eat, I do not panic at what everyone says, because I know we are different physically and our bodies do not react the same for all of us! Thank you for being open to us.
My A1c dropped from 5.8 to 5.3 and all my health markers improved over the past year and the biggest change I've made is eating a lot more fruits and veggies and specifically a LOT more fruits. I now regularly eat a large plate of just fruits for a meal (a common dinner will be 1 apple, 1 pear, 1-2 mangoes,1 orange, 1-2 bananas and some grapes - which makes for a pretty large meal!). My mom is diabetic and I'm not confident enough in this to advise her to eat fruit so I leave her to follow the advice of her naturopath, but in my experience the fruit seems to agree with me, I feel better eating it and my lab results all look a lot better than a year ago.
I have questioned the advice to eat less fruit too. According to the book, "Mastering Diabetes," fruit is better than fat. Both authors have diabetes and say that fat blocks the glucose receptors in the body so that insulin can't do its job, or something like that. There is so much conflicting information that it is difficult to know what to do.
@@funshinebear4822 If I remember correctly, they both developed Type 1 at a young age, but don't quote my on that. They will have to live with it for the rest of their lives but they have been able to severely reduce their medications and are doing well by eating a lot of fruit. I am just trying to say that I have read many books touting the benefits of a plant-based diet as being optimal but as I research further, I don't believe that that advice is correct anymore. I won't delete my comment above but I am questioning the plant-based diet and believe it to be a new world order diet.
The carbs in the bananas are mostly fructose whereas those in the candy bar are sucrose. Sucrose is made of half glucose and half fructose. There is certainly a difference in the absorption and the metabolism of fructose and glucose which should definitely be considered in a test like this.
Eduardo is correct. Tommy should check his facts 😀 fructose is primarily metabolized in liver but glucose can be metabolized in almost all kinds of cells. That is what I read. Probably insulin rises abnormally to protect the liver which is a vital organ
In my diabetes education course they did this experiment - offering volunteers one of those mini chocolate bars & measure blood sugar after an hour. Blood sugar good! We were told it was the fat in the dairy.
Very very interesting!!! Newly type 2 diabetic I have been doing my own research. I switched bananas to berries. Stopped all processed food. I love your testing different foods and especially loved your white/brown rice!!!
Thank you so much "Spirit of Grace" for subjecting yourself to the pain of self-testing in order to help us visualize the effects of foods on diabetic blood sugars, as well as practical ways to improve our health and keep our blood sugar in check! God bless you richly for such a ministry. Love
I wanted to tell you that I made chia seed refrigerated overnight cereal. I put 4 tablespoons of chia seed & a cup of milk, cinnamon, salt & vanilla then I heat edit with a couple tablespoons of butter then I put a big handfuls of sliced almonds and pumpkin seeds. It was a great breakfast!!
Sir Please check the Rice Resistant carb sugar spike again Only; this time, cook the Basmati rice like spagetti. Cook the rice in a large amount of BOILING salted water. When it is cooked, drain out ALL the starchy water through a colander and rinse the cooked rice with cold water. Put the rice in the refrigerator overnight, and eat it cold the next day. I would like to know if rice cooked in this manner causes a sugar spike. Thank you once again for your great videos.
IIeat frozen chunks of banana and avocado, in a bowl drizzled over top with with virgin olive oil, a few tblspns of low sugar greek yougurt topped with sliced almonds, and organic cinnamon powder. I love it
My thoughts about this is that since you have been on a low-carb diet for a long time, the FIRST high-carb meal (which would be something out-of-range for the body's glucose and insulin levels) would be a higher reading as it releases stored insulin reserves into the bloodstream to process the glucose. The next high-carb meal would be lower because the body makes adjustments to this new diet.
Yeah you know, I always wondered if someone completely stopped eating KETO/LOCARB and went back to eating carbs again, if their glucose levels would go higher than the average person who does not follow a KETO/LOCARB DIET. Would it be because their bodies have been so used to eating a KETO /LOCARB DIET that the body isn’t used to eating that many carbs and thats causing such a Spike? Does anyone know the answer to this???

I had a similar experience with grapes vs ice cream. The grapes shot my blood glucose up over 200 vs the ice cream which actually lowered my blood glucose! I told my doctor, but he just scoffed at me as he didn't believe me. I told him that I know my body, so I will continue eating ice cream...granted, it is low carb ice cream now!

I am just curious, do you remember were they green grapes or red? Did they have seeds? I am curious if the modern varieties are worse than the seeded grapes that might be more heritage varieties/non GMO.
@Good News Keto you are delusional if you think having ice cream will help you control diabetes in the long run! Every doctor in the world will tell you that diabetics should stay way from grapes and ice creams! If it comes to ‘occasionally’ then 5 grapes will be as harmless as an ice cream scoop!
I used to do a banana smoothie every morning before I got my high blood sugar diagnosis. I'm on a three month low carb diet to see if it's diabetes. But I can't believe how much the banana raises blood sugar!

Haha trolls,I found this interesting,I think the best thing to do is have a banana followed by a candy bar for breakfast, get some variety.

You go and eat your candy bar 😂😂😂. I’ll have my banana any time over a disgusting candy bar.

You also need to eat a protein after eating all that starch and sugar.
@@abaneyone And fiber
I just ate a banana. For future reference, should I start moving literally immediately, or do I at least get to wait like 30 minutes at least?
You’re right that there is always going to be surprises. One day my blood sugar numbers improve so the next day I eat the same things but my sugar is higher. I think other factors come in to play, such as amount of exercise, quality of sleep and stress.
Yes you’re right! It’s like that for me too, and I get confused but then have to remember stress can raise BS levels just like lack of sleep can, too.
@Relax Relax yup it does
The candy bars each had 7 grams of saturated fat and 2 grams of protein. The 14 grams of fat and 4 grams of protein slowed the spike in blood sugar. The bananas were all carbs with no fat and no protein so the carbs were converted to glucose right away.

Beat Diabetes! I totally enjoy and appreciate the work you do, Thanks and God Bless you.
You make some very interesting comments. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I learned some things.

Mine too but I noticed the peak varies. Consume sugars it spikes in an hour. Good meal 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
You are a great person by helping others to help with diabetes or pre-diabetes. God bless you.Thank you.
my guess is that the candy bars are lab tested and measured to contain exactly that amount of carbs. those bananas look extra EXTRA large, which likely contain way more carbs than one might think or guess. clearly no way of measuring that exact banana unless you are in a lab. but, here's the thing. regardless of this, what is failed to be mentioned is his lean physique. why you ask? because EVERYONE will get that spike from either of these foods, no matter if they are diabetic or not. why does this make a difference? ask Dennis if his body was able to lower his glucose levels by itself or did he need to take insulin? this is exactly my point. you should be measuring after 2 or 3 hours, not 1 hour. after 1 hour, the body is still processing the glucose, so of course it will still be high unless hes burned it off through vigorous exercise. i dont think Denis is highly insulin resistant that much with him being slim and lean, if he is Type 2. morbidly obese people can be heavily insulin resistant because of the comorbidity, in which the body does not lower the blood sugar without help from medication. they key is to maintain 100mg/dl or less in glucose levels all the time, meaning no spikes, and low carb seems to do that. problem is for me, that i did not take into account that the large amount of fat intake would clog my arteries, so now i have a 2nd diseases to worry about, from what my cardiologist told me.

@ashtynnehudecz lol ... what about all the chemicals in the so called chocolate... food should not have an ingredient label
Yes, its called the glycemic load
@@Neptunecloud Thanks for the confirmation.
Thank you for taking the time to present your experiences with sugar.
An eye opener even if we have no history of diabetes.👍👍👍👍
This is my fav diabetic video ever. Thank you Dennis.
Ty for sharing Pastor Dennis and Benedicta and God bless 🙌 🙏
I’m thinking the fat and some protein slowed the quickness of the sugars in the candy bars spiking the insulin
The fats in the bars slowed the absorption of the sugars and carbs
Totally true. I'm assuming this guy is type 2 and still producing insulin so the fat slowing down the absorption of the chocolate gave his slow body "time" to deal with the glucose uptake whereas the bananas are assimilated faster. Hence a more drastic spike.
Exactly.
Obviously!
Maybe the had a higher fructose to glucose ratio.
I came here to say the same
Thanks man my blood was 250 almost every day I stopped eating carbs now my blood is 127 thanks for video 😙😙😙
That's great! Way to go!
About how long did it take you? I'm starting to do that now.

Dr, thanks for testing/risking with your own body / health. I appreciate that very much!
THANK YOU! for your help and all your sacrifice to help educate us.
Shocking video. A real eye opener.Thank you
Welcome!
Thank you
So, what did you find out?
dear dennis...you are a wonderful human being..keep up the good work
Thanks, Ketan.
Thank you. Valuable information for sure.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for doing this "super size me" type experiment on our behalf!
You are so amazing! Thank you so much for this video. I've learned so much today from you. Thank you .
Bananas give me the WORST heartburn ,when someone tells me to eat a banana for my reflux it makes me want to scream !!!!!
I just wanted to thank you, for all the worked that you do, and that approach that you take in explaining, in how it makes so much sense, how to go about this issue.
God Bless you and your Love Ones Thank you .
I appreciate that!
Keep saving millions of lives. Great job.
Thank you Dennis, you are my hero ,you are above those Dr's (like my self) who didn't give enough emphasis on low carb diet, I was doing it on and off in the past but my A1C has not been changing , always 6 to 6.4, finally I run to your channel and subscribed, watch every day and follow my low carb diet constantly, I got my A1C today, guess what 5. 3, in the past I lowered it to 4.5 but went back to 6 when I stopped watching my food..I'm happy to see that I lowered it once again and would like to say Thank you for making a difference, for letting us know the reality with out being tired, I don't think I will go back to that bad reading again as long as you keep posting this educational videos and I keep watching them ,
Thank you kindly!
That's great! Thanks for sharing!
I've read this elsewhere on the web. Eventually, I found this video and I personally belive this to be true. Thank you for making me think again... ! 💐🙏✍️
Really appreciate this video..thanks for posting.
Read 100 year old diet books and they all say to not eat bananas.
I like all you videos sir. I learn a lot. Thank you and keep posting informative videos like this.
Nice test! Remember that the candy has also fat in it and this can slow the sugar respond but the fruit is all sugar. Keep the good work!!
That was a great experiment. I thank you for all that you do.
I’ve been told by nurse several times to test 2 hours after eating
Becca_Biscuit ikr I’m trying to not go crazy wanting to know his two hour sugars 😤
Best guess is fat in candy bar blunted glycemic response. Thanks for doing these tests so the rest of us don’t have to!
I have been following some of your videos, I use caution with what I eat, I do not panic at what everyone says, because I know we are different physically and our bodies do not react the same for all of us! Thank you for being open to us.
Thank you. God bless you for trying to help others.
Both authors "have" or "had" diabetes?
@@funshinebear4822 If I remember correctly, they both developed Type 1 at a young age, but don't quote my on that. They will have to live with it for the rest of their lives but they have been able to severely reduce their medications and are doing well by eating a lot of fruit. I am just trying to say that I have read many books touting the benefits of a plant-based diet as being optimal but as I research further, I don't believe that that advice is correct anymore. I won't delete my comment above but I am questioning the plant-based diet and believe it to be a new world order diet.
Why didn’t you eat one banana? I never eat 2
YES I AGREE 1 BANANA IS BETTER...OR EVEN 1/2 A MEAL...
I never met anyone who eats 2 bananas for breakfast.
@@MightyCrazy I used to eat two or three bananas for breakfast I loved them so much.😀
@@ninamarie8654 Glad to meet you :)
I never even eat a whole banana. Just half at lunch or breakfast and hours later the other half.
The carbs in the bananas are mostly fructose whereas those in the candy bar are sucrose. Sucrose is made of half glucose and half fructose. There is certainly a difference in the absorption and the metabolism of fructose and glucose which should definitely be considered in a test like this.
Wrong; all carbs are eventually broken down into glucose.
Eduardo is correct. Tommy should check his facts 😀 fructose is primarily metabolized in liver but glucose can be metabolized in almost all kinds of cells. That is what I read. Probably insulin rises abnormally to protect the liver which is a vital organ
Thank you for the test. I've been surfing thru your videos. You are making a difference in my life. God bless you and your family.
That's great, Frank!
In my diabetes education course they did this experiment - offering volunteers one of those mini chocolate bars & measure blood sugar after an hour. Blood sugar good! We were told it was the fat in the dairy.
Eat less, move more
Thanks for the irrelevant and generic advice.
"Measure twice, cut once".
See I can do it, too. Wheee!
Thanks for doing this test. Very interesting! The fat in the candy bar produces a lower glycemic index than the banana IMO.
Very very interesting!!! Newly type 2 diabetic I have been doing my own research. I switched bananas to berries. Stopped all processed food. I love your testing different foods and especially loved your white/brown rice!!!
Good for you!
Thank you so much "Spirit of Grace" for subjecting yourself to the pain of self-testing in order to help us visualize the effects of foods on diabetic blood sugars, as well as practical ways to improve our health and keep our blood sugar in check! God bless you richly for such a ministry. Love
Thanks, Rose!

Wow, anything over 140 you are doing permanent damage to your small arteries
Sir
Please check the Rice Resistant carb sugar spike again
Only; this time, cook the Basmati rice like spagetti.
@@arroyobaby38 hence why keto isn't good I believe in eating carbs not a lot but a banana won't harm u I used to eat 1 before bed and in the morning my blood sugar was ok
@@xenaburg2362 - Oh I can understand why you feel that way. TOTALLY. A lot of people are on it to lower their blood sugars though.
Orange juice is a nightmare when I’ve had my blood sugar taken and I don’t even have diabetes
You sure ?????
Apple juice is worse due to fructose. Albeit won't raise blood sugar as high.
Fructose reduces blood sugar levels doctors don't want this truth to be known because nobody would go to them if your sugar level is under control
@@samdog8087 Yes for sure when you blend fruits to extract juice the good fibers will be broken and all you will get is pure fructose .So eat fruits as god has created them 😁

Grapes are a nightmare.
@@beatdiabetes3 tell me about it! They are my favorite fruit, but I had to give them up except for special RARE days, but I plan ahead with my insulin pen in hand!
Thank you so much for your enlightening video. You opened my eyes!
I used to do a banana smoothie every morning before I got my high blood sugar diagnosis. I'm on a three month low carb diet to see if it's diabetes. But I can't believe how much the banana raises blood sugar!
