Everything About How to Fish a Spinnerbait - Bass Fishing

- Here is everything that I know about how to fish a spinnerbait. Perhaps one of the best lures that people don't fish often the spinnerbait can catch bass all year long. A simple change of size, blade, or speed can be the trick. It can be fished like a jig or like a crankbait and it can be virtually weedless. Get a few and try them out. You won't be sorry.

The spinnerbait has been my Go-To confidence lure for the last few years, I have started using a Chatterbait in it’s place a little bit lately as I have a little less trouble with thin stem silver dollar pads that are prevalent in my local ponds up here in NH. Great info as always Gene. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Only been “seriously” bass fishing for just over a year and I hardly ever throw a spinner bait, but I know I should more often and will now. Thanks for the video!
I used a spinnerbait a few weeks ago for the first time and caught my PB! It was only 13 inches but still the biggest bass I've caught!
Wait till ya catch a 25!
Oooo pls tell me your new or a kid like I have only fished for 2 years and I’ve caught a 20
I guess I am kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good site to stream new movies online ?
@@KrowTCG yeah! Lol I’ve only been bass fishing for a years and a little more, my biggest is a 20
@@KrowTCG no need to be a prick
I've NEVER had luck with a spinner bait UNTIL after I decided to force myself to use one all day. Now it's a confidence bait for me! Great video!
I fully agree. Had NO cofidence in it ( love soft plastics) but once i saw how my son nail them on the spinnerbait, i was hooked!
Using one all day is about the only way to catch one. Gotta bout 10 spinners in my box
It made me very happy to hear that you don't use any type of trailer on your spinnerbait. Same here. I feel like it impedes the sleekness of a spinnerbait. Really great info here Gene. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks.
Great video!! Now my 25+ years experiences with spinnerbaits has been pretty good truth be told any time of year. I prefer white chartrues skirts and tandem with willow leaf blade on bottom. Usually 3/8 oz to 1/2oz is my preferred weight! I fish mainly clear to stained water and occasionally very stained waters! I do run a few shad color skirts also but not many! And I like my arm to be extended out a little more then A frame! Also I never like to big of blades especially on the bottom blade where the blade is almost 1/2 inch or more past the hook. I used to use worm bags also but I ran Into my skirts drying out! So now I use a plano spinnerbait box! Well anyways great take on your opinion love your videos tight lines 🎣
Awesome job Genn,I just realized that that I think you were one of the first people I followed on UA-cam and I'm still watching your video because I learn so much ,and I've been fishing for 44 years 👊🍺🍻
Thanks Ken
heyo fluke i have a place on jackson lake any chance we could go fishing some time? and thanks for the tips they are super helpful
This was a really good break down about spinnerbait fishing. Knew some of it....but learned several new things as well. Thanks for sharing!
Love spinnerbaits year round. I’ve caught my last two pb on one.i use double willow. I Gotta try the Colorado.
Just want to say THANKS! I am fairly new to kayak fishing. trying to set up mt Ascend 128 and be more productive this year. Love all the help you provide! It is much appreciated from Southern NH! Tight Lines!
A black and blue spinner bait with a single Colorado gold blade has been my favorite here in West Central Florida they just nail it ferociously, I do throw a double willow leaf sexy shad and believe it or not I mostly get huge catfish on it and only a few bass on them I gotta restock on some Colorado spinner baits I think I'm down to one. Great informative talk thanks Gene.
Hi there from the UK! I have been thinking of trying spinner baits in my often murky local rivers this time of year, fishing for big perch. I knew little about them before, but you’ve just put me right. Very informative - thanks!👍
for rivers you are gonna want to throw a rooster tail or a trout magnet
Great video. I enjoy the way you explain your techniques and more importantly why you do it the way you do. I’ve been away from bass fishing for over 30 years and am getting in back full force. Thank you for of your knowledge and information.
Welcome back! and thank you
Really great info as always man especially about the 2 different type action rods you use.
I pond hop on larger ponds stocked with Florida strain bass in NE Texas and I have found that the larger fish like a single #6 Colo. blade, baby bass color with a swim-tail trailer. Slow roll, pull and pause. The bite is on the pause. Let it fall after the cast if you know there is deeper cover. If in the spring, work the bank lines at different speeds till you know what the fish want. A big blade likes to be slow rolled. Dont be afraid of slow-rolling the bait and then letting it rest.
Spinnerbaits have been my “go-to” for as long as I can remember. All water conditions all seasons.
even when it's very hot and sunny and the bass is lazy in the covers?
Just caught my first one on a spinnerbait this past weekend, lot of fun. They really come through hard cover quite well.
You got my vote when you mentioned the Hank Parker Classic by Mann's. It's been my Holy Grail Spinnerbait since 12yrs old. I've preached 'em to anyone & everyone since then. If it's Mann's. It's worth having
Great video on my favorite bait to throw. Catches fish year-round and it's so versatile, one heck of a contact lure in timber!
Thanks for the video Gene. I'm new to spinner bait fishing so this video really helped out.
Appreciate the tips, answered any questions I've ever had
Awesome video thanks, spinner baits are a confidence bait for me. I especially like it because I have some smaller urban spots that I go to and the spinner bait just delivers most the time. I think chatter baits and swim bait are the primary reason people don't fish spinner baits as much, but they stay in heavy rotation in my arsenal.
You do a very good job dude. Enjoy watching and keep em coming!
Spinner Bait is my GO to lure.. All the places I fish either from bank or in the kayak, the Pike and Bass love it
Great group of instructional videos, thank you for all you have given us!
Don't know why it works so well, but the Strike King mini-king in black in blue (single colorado) absolutely slays fish up here in Canada. Everything from bluegill to crappie to bass, pike and even walleye, that thing outfishes every other colour, it's almost stupid. If a youngster is just starting out with a spinning rod, I'd be hard pressed to recommend a better search bait. As a result, I picked up a couple Lunkerhunts in 'Dark Knight' and started swapping blades. Batta-bing, batta boom, bigger fish.
Good info and the main take away for me is the short arm less hang ups. I love to fish in the spring but my better fishing is always in the fall.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Finally a simple and AMAZING explanation of spinnerbaits! Thanks again!

I love fishing a spinnerbait- it is the best reaction bait in the murky waters of louisiana
I’m a beginner fisherman as far as freshwater. So far my favorite lures are spinners. I love just tossing them out and recalling them in. Not a lot to it technique wise. I’ve caught all types of fish on them and all sizes. First fish a caught was baby, I’m not sure how he even got it in his mouth. Anyway great information as always.
Thanks for the clarifications on when to use which type blade
Gene: SOB Lures Mini -Me. My favorite spinnerbait...period. Made to burn. And my blast from the past is the Fleck Weed Wader. I love those two spinnerbaits. When I found the Mini-Me it was like finding the spinnerbait all over again. Love the Mann’s Classic in 3/4 ounce too.
Right on man definitely worth learning more knowledge from the experience of many well know fisherman Thanks.
Great info! The one question I’m left with is what depths have you found comfortable to fish a spinnerbait? Given the time of year I’d guess 0’ -15’?
Dang good video man. Love the rusty hook comment!
I'm now a subscriber to your channel. Ty, love learning more about fishin
Great video thank you. I always had plenty of questions on spinnerbaits so thank you.
My favorite lure....can fish anywhere in water column & very versatile.....
When you said using a light weight with the spinner baits could you do a video on rigging it up. I have never used a spinner bait and I want to try it. Thanks
Old school bait, old school vid! Nice
I just started using a spinner bait I thought they were just for beginners but I have been catching bass and chain pickerel effectively with a white one and paddle tail trailer
Thank you for the video my name is Juan and I have a question for you? What size of spinner bait do you use
What about the diameter of the wire? What diameter do you prefer most? Thinner wire gives more vibration but is weaker. What you think is best?
I never really caught anything until I started adding a swimbait trailer onto my spinner baits and have been having real good luck since then.
I really liked hearing you give us some awesome tips. But could I throw a spinner bait on my Medium Heavy moderate 7 foot glass crankbait rod for running the spinner bait around shoreline rocks and occasional submerged trees?
Does blade color make a difference?
Awsome great video needed a video like this had so many ? About spinnerbaits and wut rod to use I just bought a 7ft heavy fast action cuz I couldnt find a 610 or 7 ft mh mod. Rod in my price range and alot were sold out hope this rod does wut I want it to do like rip threw grass
First person I go to if I need information is you
Question, you mentioned colors, for using a spinnerbait at night would a black with dual Colorado be good?
Love it, spinners baits make more sense now.
Gene, great info. I appreciate you giving us bank fisherman tips/info when your talking about how to fish the spinnerbait. My question is, since im a bank angler i usually carry 3 rods, sometimes 4. So one of my do everything rods is 7-2 Shimano Zodias MH fast tip. (I dont own any moderate action rods. I usually carry a spinning rod for finesse, my mh zodias and my med action jerkbait rod. Sometimes i carry a heavy rod or another spinning rod) I know u said moderate action, but can i still be successful with this Zodias MH fast tip rod? Ive never caught a bass on a spinnerbait but im going to try to force myself to throw the 3 spinnerbaits i own more often. I use my Zodias for chatterbaits which i think is similar to spinnerbaits as far as what gear i can poss use?
Hey gene what is a good bait to use on a 6:6:1 gear ratio with a 6'10 medium fast action rod? Thanks
But he never mentioned what kind of rigging and reeling method to use? I use a swivel to prevent line tangling, should I put weight on it. How fast should I reel?
Wow this may be the most varied lure I ever tried to lean. Trailers, no trailers. Lots of different ways.
What kind of line do you use? Flouro or straight braid?
Y'all fished Carter's lake in Georgia? Looking for some good places to spotted bass fish there.
Do you put trailers (worms or craws) on them? Thanks
Man, I love a spinner bait in the morning, it smells like victory
I do to, I never really fish spinnerbaits that much, but people have so much success with it, so im gonna use it more often.
Great video 🎣🐟
Him recommending a 7.2:1 gear ratio for spinner baits, me using a 3:1 spin cast reel and trying to make up for the difference in speed.
How do you throw them in heavy cover with out losing my lure? Anyway I can make it weedless
Hey Gene, What brand of rod is your MH Moderate? Appreciate your videos
It’s a 13 Fishing Fate Black Chat-R-Crank rod.
I have a 6ft 6in Medium, Fast action rod. Would that be okay for spinnerbaits? I just started fishing this year and have been constantly watching your videos! They are very helpful! How important is it to have a specific rod for a certain bait? I think I might have missed it in the video, but what line/test do you use?
Lithirrael perfect for 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits. Will work for 3/8 too. For 3/8 to 1/2 I would suggest going to a medium heavy with a soft tip. I prefer the shorter rods like 6’ 6 or 6’ 8, easier to get in tight spots and more accurate casts.
@@Eyesofthasouth Right now I'm looking at some medium heavy rods. A lot of debate about fast, moderate fast, or moderate. Any recommendations?
Lithirrael sure. What’s ur budget for a rod?
Dobyns Fury 703 - $120
Falcon Bucoo Finesse Jig 6’10 - $100
Falcon Lowrider same specs as bucoo
Dobyns Sierra 683 for spinnerbaits up to 3/8 ounce - $160
Dobyns SierrA 684 or 704 for 3/8 to 1/2 ounce
Dobyns medium heavy rods fish more like mediums.
St croix fast action rods are great too.
Look at the weight specs on rods. Whatever lure weight you’re wanting to throw needs to be close to middle of the specs. For instance 1/4 to 3/4 rating on a rod. A 3/8 ounce spinnerbait is the most you want to throw on it. Medium for up to 3/8, medium heavy for above.
Bass pro bionic blade is also a really good rod for a great price. Medium fast for 1/4 to 3/8 and medium heavy fast for 3/8 to 1/2. And if you’re looking for a reel the bass pro qualifier is a great reel. Now on sale for holidays. You’ll be hard pressed to find a better reel.
Still havemt caught a bass on a spinnerbait, but i did somehow catch a catfish trolling with one lol. COmpletely destroyed my lure and i bent it back but the big blade is missing
I bet fish be like "🐟🤦🏻 damnit I did it again!" 😂😂😂
Great video
I caught my pb today I didn’t have a scale but If isn’t 10 you can have my soul
I caught it on a spinnerbait
Do you trim the skirt any? @flukemaster
Nope
Another great video fluke,
Tight lines...and GO DAWGS!
Awesome...thanks
What line do you use mono or flor
Thanks for sharing👍
I really feel like the spinnerbait has gotten lost in most guys arsenal in the past 10-15 years. My go to reaction bait around wood and rock.
What lake are you on
very good, after my own heart man
What;s the thing on your cap
Wish they still made turtle shell blades
GOOD INFO 👊👍🎣
They still make the Hank Parker spinnerbait!
how do i know if i have a fish on a spinnerbait
Hey Genn... Caught my biggest bass on a spinnerbait... 6 lbs....😎
Here's everything I know about spinnerbaits in one sentence. Get a War Eagle 3/8 oz. dbl willow leaf in gold shiner color. You're welcome.
Using a Spinnerbait at Stone Mountain no luck yet!
Awesome video!I have learned so much through the years from you!Your teaching is top notch!I recently started a channel teaching the art of making lures and fishing with them.Check it out when you get a chance!
You ever come to Maryland Look me up Tumbleweed u can teach me how to fish this deep reservoir Prettyboy
If you ain’t first you’re last, guess that makes me last for real!
Fluke that old video of you fishing the spinner bait shows you using a trailer and trailer hook! What changed to now you don’t?
Now I only put one on if I start getting short strikes. Honestly that doesn't happen that often.
Ah that makes sense. Was there a particular reason for making these changes or to simplify? Some older videos, you discussed using a snell knot for flipping verse palomar (I saw the ike video where he discussed it too) but a recent video you indicated that you didn't do that anymore. Just curious if you honed in on your techniques or if simplifying your bait assortment made it easier. I often find myself at an impasse when buying lures and wanting to expand my colors beyond confidence colors (shad, chartreuse, white, black) but then it's hard to find a time to use them because I would prefer a confidence color. Sorry for writing a book, maybe this will be for a Friday Night Live question!
I finally caught a fish on a Spinnerbait. It never worked for me before.
Do you ever a spinnerbait without a trailer?
Yes. As a matter of fact I did today.
Thanks Gene. I must say that your advice is excellent; even here in South Africa of value!
I can't catch a thing on a spinnerbait -- literally would have the same results as throwing a bare hook and hoping to catch a bass for me.
Several years ago I was exactly the same. I couldn't buy a bite on one but I forced myself to mess around with one every day I was out and eventually it started to click and I really enjoy them now.
Fluke, if you had to identify one or two keys, aside from just throwing one a million times, what was the difference maker in it becoming an effective bait for you?
Same here.
Find bank side cover. Stumps, treetops, overhanging limbs, Lilly pads etc. Cast out lure past areas that seem like bass would be holding and waiting to ambush prey as it passes. Make a low cast for soft entry. Give your rod a short and quick jerk to get the blades moving. Keep your rod tip up and start reeling at a moderate fast pace until you see the spinnerbait in the water. Slow down and maintain eye contact with the bait where you can barely see it. Bring bait along side cover as if it were a baitfish. Lower your rod slowly as the bait gets closer to you. A little above parallel to the water gives you more hook setting power when one takes it. Don’t be afraid to get close to cover. It’s great for that and one heck of a adrenaline rush when you’re watching the spinnerbait as it swims along and then a bass reaches up; inhales it and runs with it! Set the hook and let the fight begin! Hope this helps
@@Eyesofthasouth it does. I'll give it a concerted go.
Anybody here ever try the war eagle wake bait Spinnerbait with any success
It would help if you would hold the lure steady for a bit before you start talking about it.

What kind of maniac is clicking the thumbs down?
Why does every fishing UA-cam video have 2-3 minutes of useless intro
So people like you can have something to complain about
You did not show how to properly tie spinner bait or if you add any weight to the line, etc. Thanks.
You can tie it with any standard fishing knot and I didn't show any weight added because I never add weight. In fact I've never heard of adding weight to the line. That would cause all sorts of problems.
@@Flukemaster Thanks!
