    I've only owned my mimic for a few days. I am a huge fan of analog synths and love getting creative with deep diving to find new sounds. This video inspired me to spend tomorrow deep diving to see what kind of sounds I can coax out of it.
    Awesome video. Very creative sound layering. Love the quote about breaking sounds down into parts.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop I did. Now the only problem I'm getting is my kick drum. I play a 24x14 3 ply kick and love wide open resonant kicks. Having a real problem getting my kick to not sound thuddy. Gonna play around with compression and EQ and try and get it figured out.
      I have samples from my acoustic kick. Was also thinking of layering a sample from my resonant kick head and adding some attack so I just get the resonance. Gonna play around with it.

    Awesome Tutorial! I've spent some time playing with these less obvious settings with some dramatic results as well. BTW, as for the TD-27, it has the same washed out and over-processed sounds as the TD-17 and TD-50. No need to waste time on it, IMHO, LOL.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Thanks John, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it's surprising just how much flexibility some of these settings can give you with a bit of creativity or time! I know what you mean on the sounds of the 27 - that sound character only appeals to some people. I'm actually far more interested in the general feature set of the module over the sounds - it's the best mid-level offering Roland have given for some time. But it's not going to be for everyone.

    Thanks for the videos. I’m currently in the process of an A2E conversion. I have Yamaha PCY135 and PCY155 cymbals (3zone). Do you know if they are compatible with the Mimic. Also, I’m confused. Does the module have a “snares off” option? Maybe I missed it.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      You're welcome, thanks for watching! Yes, both of those Yamaha cymbals are compatible with the Mimic. You can even use both of them as 3 zone rides together, there's an option to split the ride bow/bell inputs into two full ride inputs with 3 zone cymbals.
      Unfortunately there are no snares off samples at all inside the Mimic, that's why I made this video! To show how you can create a snares off sound by manipulating "snares on" samples and tom samples together to emulate the "snares off" sound.

      In this video, in my snare I'm using the Gear Drum 3CS trigger (I have a first impressions video up on the channel but will have a full review soon) with a Roland BT-1 attached to the rim, DIY centre mount for the rack tom, Alesis Strike floor tom pad, DIY trigger on the kick (basically just a side trigger), centre mount DIY for the little aux pad and a mixture of Roland, ATV and Yamaha cymbals. I might do a gear run down video at some point though!

    awesome !!!
    finally percussion sounds from mimics ...
    I hope that your creativity will not stop here and that the rest of us will learn how to improve the already perfect-imperfect module.
    otherwise I quote you about td-27:
    -But it's not going to be for everyone.
    in your opinion what is the interest group of this roland module?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Cheers! I aim to do some more of these when I get chance. I've been playing with some other sounds so hopefully won't be too long!
      For the 27 - I think as far as eDrummers go, people who want to upgrade to the digital pads from a previous low/mid module but can't afford or don't need a TD-50, especially those who want to use VSTs with digital pads but don't want a flagship just for VSTs. There's some other good features on it too.
      Or, if looking from the perspective of those who aren't currently eDrummers, or have only dabbled - paired with the VAD kits, this is the first Roland offering that finally appeals more to those who never really liked the look or feel of eDrums - acoustic shells, thinner cymbals, digital pads for better playability. It's Roland's most affordable option that's actually attractive to those outside of the eDrum scene, in my opinion. Still very expensive but more and more people are having to look towards eDrums out of circumstance (home practice, volume control at gigs etc). Roland equals eDrums for a lot of people outside the scene so the other options might not have been as well known or "trusted" for those people.
      Wow, that became an essay!

      @mintichess8496 4 роки тому

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Well put.
      If I may notice, it seems to me, that the mimic is the undisputable best module for live performances. However, could the same be said if you used a Roland module with a VST - not for live performing, of course, but for home or studio use?
      Interestingly, if you compare the prices of the DAV 506 and an ATV EXS set, or the Drumtec Diabolo with the Mimic module, we can conclude that it is only a difference in the cost of the TD-27 and the Mimic. So, if the Vad 506 came with the TD-50 module, all three configurations would have the same price.
      This raises the question of comparing sets without modules.
      Which of these sets (without the modules) do you think has an advantage over the others?

    • @johnnorris7289
      @johnnorris7289 4 роки тому

      I posted this on Facebook a few days ago. I think it addresses the target group for Roland sounds: "
      Listening to the sounds of the new Roland TD-27, as well as those of the TD-50 and TD-17, I was struck by how phony and processed they are. Then I realized that most, if not all, of todays pop music is devoid of natural drums, and a lot of country music's drums are so over-processed that they don't sound real at all either. In this context, the reality of the sounds of the Mimic is no longer a valued attribute among younger drummers. As a jazz player, I find the Mimics samples far, far superior to anything Roland has, and would never consider going back to Roland."

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I'd say that a Roland module + VST is a very solid contender for one of the better experiences you can get sound and playability-wise, if you can do a good job of getting it all to work well together (definitely possible for those who are comfortable with it all but it's not for everyone).
      As for those kits, you'd be in good stead with any of them! I'd say that the EXS, though it would play well with the 3 cone ATV design, is the less aesthetically exciting one. Then it comes down to preference, I guess. The VAD has the digital pads but they're only useful with the Roland modules so it's down to the triggers. Different designs but all good quality!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      I see where you're coming from, John! People's expectations over time have definitely shifted.
      I do find it's also often a case of what the other instruments in a mix will cover up - once you get to a certain volume with other instruments blaring, only certain frequencies will really matter to make up the entire sound. So you can get away with a sound that's less natural as long as it hits the right overall sound for the music, if that makes sense. Remove the instrument from that context though and the authenticity of the sound on its own will really matter and that's where the Mimic really shines!

    If allowed, another question about triggers. Which snare trigger do you currently use in combination with the Pearl Mimic

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому

      Currently, I either send MIDI to it from the TD-50 (for speed so I don't need to re-cable everything) or a 13" conversion snare with a DRONE trigger in it and a Roland BT-1 attached. I haven't done a review of the DRONE trigger because the guy who makes them has closed up shop for the time being and even when he was selling more triggers, he was mostly only making small volumes and selling things as he finished them.

    Does the mimic support cross sticking like the td-50/td-27?

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      It supports cross-stick but not the exact same way. The 27/50"s digital pads have a sensor which let it know your hand is on the pad, no other modules can do that method.
      With the Mimic, you can set it up so you have the head sound, the cross-stick on the rim and then rimshot sounds when hitting a rimshot like you would on an acoustic, though this means you don't get the "rim click" articulation (like just tapping the rim). The best setup imo is using a Roland BT-1 trigger attached to the snare for cross-stick. This lets you have head, rim click when hitting the rim, a rimshot and then cross-stick on the BT-1 which is pretty close to feeling like how the digital pads do it. It does mean taking up an extra input just for the cross-stick, but it also gives you individual routing and FX for it which is a good trade-off, I think. Hope that helps!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      The reason I actually put this out a day early is that I'm aiming to do a quick overview and first impressions video for the TD-27 and the new Roland VAD kits tomorrow, going over some features compared to the others and my initial reaction based on what we know. I wouldn't be able to do a full review without getting hands on with the module but there might be a follow up to tomorrow's video down the line if I find out more information.

    • @jezusmylord
      @jezusmylord 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Coolio, yeah its logical a full review isnt possible until you actually played them for some more time, The VAD drum line is probably aimed to compete with ATVs full seized drums, the same goes for the new 16 inch crash they put on those drums, apparently the ATV cymbals must get really popular if they actually answer with conter-offer for the customers, I have the ride from ATV and its world class i must say that. The e-drum market is getting really interesting this year. Cant wait to see what you have to say about them.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Yeah, it's really interesting to see them go full-on with an ATV-looking acoustic kit and ATV style thinner cymbals. Definitely trying to flex on other companies with the kits and pricing, they know their brand name will push people towards their kits more if they're competing at a very similar level like that.

    • @jezusmylord
      @jezusmylord 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop They even kinda "borrowed" the three cone trigger system on those new pads from ATV, if they made the cymbals 360 like ATVs they would be perfect then. Next year they will anounce a digital hihat i bet, thats why the td27 has three digital inputs and THAT will be a game changer. Well the ATV full sized shells arent that cheap either, or drumtec ones so roland charging the same money is okay i guess.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I was very surprised that the 3 cone approach has been adopted - though I do think that part of why Roland never went larger than 12 inch pads is down to the centre cone so I can see why they've done it. And ATV pads being highly regarded will have helped push it. I hope they do come out with a digital hi-hat - I was kind of surprised they didn't at least attempt a 14" analogue pad alongside the new cymbals - the 12 inch VH-10, 11 and 13 are now the weak points in the cymbal selection in terms of size.
      And yeah, other brands being that pricey help Roland keep their appearances up on price but also not be much higher than them either.
