It's Only Rock 'n' Roll - Ronnie Woods original home recording with David Bowie
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 бер 2021
- This is THE version of It's Only Rock 'n' Roll that was taped in Ronnie's home studio in 1974. Ronnie Wood and David Bowie on acoustic and also Ronnie on lead. Sounds like everyone's singin too! Willie Weeks(?) on bass and Kenney Jones on the drums as well.
If you listen closely to the left channel you can hear what has been assumed to be Mick Taylor's guitar part in the studio version. Not sure if Mick Taylor was there too, or if it's been Ronnie the whole time. Ronnie is definitely the 12 string in the left channel meaning the one in the right is David Bowie.
This is some pretty rare stuff I guess, but I might post some more if anyone's interested in it any more. let me know.
I know it's only a demo but I like it
Lol! 😆

...and the next evolution of this idea! 💡 Great, buzz!

This is the best version I've heard! Shades of T-Rex
Nuances of T Rex !Yes!
The David Bowie’s voice ,probably ...and the electric guitar rythm certainly !
A very good version !
Nice calls. This was at their best, when it wasn’t contrived, they were at their best just riffin it out who cares if the verse is a bit different….
I can hear the dirty sweet and your my girl in it
I can hear it, but the Stones had that chugging rhythm guitar way before T Rex.
It’s the other way around, Einstein.
Love that chuga chuga chuga groove!!
I was with my late older brother, the first time I heard this song (1974: the official Stones version). Fast track to 1992: my late older brother met both Keith Richards and David Bowie that year.
Speaking of which, of course, you all recall Bowie's "Aladdin Sane" album, and his peculiar version of "Let's Spend The Night Together". My late older brother not only recorded an entire album in the same studio as Bowie used for the songs-'The Jean Genie' and 'Drive-In Saturday', but he ended up spending the night at Keith Richards' house numerous times! True story.
Ronnie Wood, is an OUTSTANDING ARTIST, Along with the Stones, Their all LEGENDS, R.I.P. CHARLIE & GOD BLESS HIS FAMILY.
Woody could have been one of the best illustrators EVAH...
Ronnie had a style all his own from the face's to the stones. rock on.
Don't forget the Jeff Beck group and Rod Stewart's solo LPs. (Should we include the Birds, which I think was Ronnie's earliest work?) Ronnie brings a lot to the party, and has never seemed to ask for too much. Perfect side-man.
Yes he does. He's a perfect fit for the Stones.
A great guitarist !🇬🇧!
@Clayton's Riot
A monster ! I agree!
Yeah shyte, added nothing to the stones
So cool. Love how you can hear Bowie’s vocals better
Can't really distinguish Bowie....
@@deanmasih8485 You need better headphones
@@anujbajracharya55 Clever. Drop dead
@@deanmasih8485 - the harmony on the lead vocal, and the "only rock and roll"s at the end. He stands right out.
Bowies voice adds a new vibe to the chorus
Wow, this is the best version I've ever heard! If you have more of this, definitely I want to hear it and so do lots of people.
Go ask Ronnie Wood
The basic tracks are still there; guitar, bass and drums and some back vocals on the chorus. They overdubbed and tried to replace the bass and drums, but ended up leaving Kenny’s drums on the stones version.
Rhythm section is spot on, sharp as a tack.
I like this better than the original. I hope there's more stuff like this.
Well actually it is the original.Jagged made a deal with Ronnie Wood (Not part of the Stones at the time) to take the tapes for him and Richards to record for the Stones.
What a treat! Wood, is such,
an underestimated, talented, man! Title, says it all, really,..
Wood saved the Stones.
Wood is an absolutely amazing artist also…
Ronnie traded it for The Stones participation and songs for his first solo album. Keith gave him "Sure The One you Need" where he sang lead vocals, and the Jagger/ Richards composition "Act Together". Jagger sang on a couple songs, Mick Taylor played on the album as well, and Keith famously stayed the whole time contributing heavily while hiding out from a girl...... resulting in "Got My Own album To Do" . Great stuff
One of my favorite albums to this day....thanks for the info
Showed he could hang and flourish in spite of Mick Taylor being a f#cking tough act to follow.
Ronnie is a very underrated guitarist..
Cool history thanks for sharing. Who was Keith hiding from? lol

How fricken fantastic was this jam!! 1970s were the BEST!!
RIP Dearest Charlie.💔
RIP Sweet Charlie. 💔
Charles Robert Watts (2 June 1941 - 24 August 2021)
Certainly NO one was more humble than dearest Charlie.
RIP Brian Jones
RIP David Bowie
RIP Nicky Hopkins
💔💔💔
I agree but, Charlie isn't on this.
Agreed. 💔
Thank you for adding Nicky.
We need to remember Ian Watkins, as well. 💔
There WAS someone more humble than Charlie, and I'm positive Mr. Watts would have agreed...Ian Stewart, who nobody had a bad word to say about.
Indeed, the '70s were the best. Take me back pls.
Very cool. I'd heard this existed but this is the first I"ve actually heard it. Better quality than what I thought it would be.
And I certainly would like more like this!
Thats because the track is the same on the records you aleays heard before… they tried to record it again in studio but in the end the original balcong track was their facourite and they only changed guitars and other stuff includingnall the vocals.. Keith told Ronnie he changed all his guitar parts but Ronnie told hin “thank you.. but you forgot my 12 strings!”
Of course you can’t hear Bowie and Ronnies backing vocals on the definitive album version.. but if you compare drums and that acoustic guitar.. it’s the same!
Yes Jagger was there, I thing every body know Jagger vocal when his singging or not
The complexity of the guitars in amazing. In some parts there's a lovely, slight echo of one guitar to another. The tasty little bits that pop out at the end of a phrase are very original and spontaneous. It sounds like very experienced people modestly working together to create a whole.
Not complex at all
It sounds like Wood on 2 guitars. And backing vocals.
Complexity? Really?
@@netosampaio8548 Yes, 'complexity'. I am assuming, sir, you don't feel this recording exhibits complexity. I suppose that's one of the beauties of UA-cam comments - you can say anything to make yourself 'feel' superior without actually 'being' superior.
There is absolutely zero chance of this happening, however, if you feel this recording does not exhibit complexity, put your money where your mouth is, Mr. Sampaio. Create and post a recording that does exhibit complexity.
Oh, that's right, you absolutely will not try because you know you could not even get close.
Oh, you don't 'feel' like it? - that's the reason you will not try to produce a recording with complexity - right.
I get what you're saying and I think other commenters are missing the point. Perhaps any given part in isolation is not that hard to play, but in ensemble, they combine for a rhythmically complex sound, and THAT is hard to do. That sort of part-weaving is quintessential to the Stones. This is remarkably tight for a casual recording.
It's hard to believe that bowie is gone.he just seemed like something that would always be there changing before the times showing what rock n roll was about.
Miss him, the world is a lot more hollow without his presence.
He's still alive.
@@catpocalypsenow8090 oh yea
@@catpocalypsenow8090 who is he now?he had to kill the character of David Bowie to move on to his new project?

This version is the the best, live and raw.
If there are only two versions then it has to be BETTER...
This has to be the best Stones groove I've heard in maybe 40 years.
Better than the version the released. Oh well Mick has always been overated.
By far the best performance of this great song. I like it, yes I like it.
I reckon this version is the only way to perform it. A spontaneous sounding raw groove. Great stuff. Thanks for the post!
rocking ronnie wood always done good....
Love to hear Bowie's Backup vocals on this
Omg! I get goosebumps when his voice comes through! I’m not a Bowie freak or anything, but his voice being so pleasantly different from the others and I hear that one word, “cry-y-y” from him, I can’t explain what happens, but it’s truly something and I like it!
@Mike Barooshian Bowie also stole their artist for the album so that he'd do the cover for Diamond Dogs. Mick was pretty mad. 😅😂
@@chrismeadows4216 that guy was a great artist.
Look live album soul tour of bowie and last song is diamonds dogs combine with only rock n roll but like it
@Mike Barooshian I really like Now Look, at least as much as My Own Album. Bobby Womack gives it a more r&b vibe and it works beautifully. 'Breathe On Me' (those guitars!!)is simply beautiful, one of Ron's best songs...
The drums really make this tune great!
Kenney Jones, drummer on this version
@@jimerskine539 On this version and on the RS album version as well (Charlie tried to overdub his drum part, but they eventually kept Kenny Jones track).

This IS rock n’ roll. Fantastic!
One of the most significant albums in the history of the Rolling Stones......and a stand alone classic to boot..
This song is so in finesse and captures the ambiance of the year 1973 and for that, matter 1974 in one song. Nostalgia, I danced to thisvon all my first 12 year olds parties in 1976
Ronnie, "It's my effing Wick and i'll sing on the recording if i damn well please."
Never heard this before. Thanks for posting it.
Ronnie Wood should have writing credit for this song.
Jagger and Wood were writing music together in late '73 (the description is wrong, this demo was not recorded in '74, but during the 4th, 5th and 6th of Dec. in '73, Kenney Jones, Willie Weeks, David Bowie, Wood, and Jagger played on it). Jagger helped Wood with "I Can Feel the Fire" (only credited to Wood) and Wood helped Jagger with "IORR", so it was a trade off. If Wood deserves credit for anything it's for coming up with the riff to "Hey Negrita". He presented the riff to the Stones in March 1975, when they were recording at Musicland in Munich.
Yeah the glimmer twins don’t credit no one. Ask the late Ian Stewart. Being in the Stones is a labour of love. No free lunch. Love em anyhow. Ask Mick Taylor about Can’t ya Hear me Knockin. Lol
@@TheRedSphinx similar thing happened with Black Limousine, mostly was Wood but credited also to Jagger /Richards

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, but when I hear that lovely David Bowie in my right ear (headphones) at around :42, my insides jump with love. No, I can’t admit how very many times I’ve repeatedly played this version without interruption. I’m blushing…

Thank you so much for sharing this. 🙏❤️
This is really GREAT!!!! One of my favorites! Thanks for sharing
The 12-string stayed, too, and Ronnie rubbed that in Keith's face after Keith bragged to him about recording over all of his guitar parts with his own overdubs later on. lol.
Great sound thank you
Now that was cool! The only thing that i know that they kept for sure on the album version was the drum and 12 string guitar track, they erased the rest and dubbed all the other tracks over that snd re-cut the vocal. This original had even more of a shuffle feel to it, and would have fit perfectly on ronnie's 1st album, instead it's his first stones song, how prophetic!
Willie Weeks is credited with playing on it,
Who is the second vocal on the studio version?
When I listen to it, both voices sound like mick
this is fantastic love it

Very nice version, 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍
Ronnie writes about this in his autobiography. Jagger and he were jamming. They agreed to split song ownership and this is one that jagger took back with him. Keith and mick taylor were not there.
In Woody's book he says that Keith did some more 🎸 overdubs to make it more Stonesy🚬

Yes! Love to hear some more.
Kenny Jones's drumming is fantastic on this...and it's a demo...Charlie had his work cut out for him.
This would have been a cool T-Rex track if Marc Bolan had been in the room.
Funny you say that....I had the volume turned way down and the basic inro rhythm sounded like Get It On (Bang A Gong) until I cued in on the words. Bolan would have done a great job with it.
Kenny played on the demo-which was used as the final drum track. The released version is Kenny Jones on drums-imitating Charlie.

Great tune for sure .Also the best performance .
Bowie recorded with Ronnie W a few months earlier in November 1973
They recorded a cover of the Bruce Springsteen song " Grown' Up".at the very early sessions for Diamond Dogs.
It did end up, however, a bonus track of the Ryko 1990 CD release of Pinups.
