Good morning, CW! I love the old 35 Whelen, such a classic and Varget is a great powder, too. Down here, I have no need for its true potential, so I usually load it with a basic cup and core bullet from Speer or Hornady. I also shoot cast, but the velocity limits it to pretty much equal my 35 rem. When/if large rifle primers come back, I will probably shoot it more to save my 35 rem brass. All of my Whelen cases are reformed 06 cases, and I don't see a shortage of those any time soon! Thanks for sharing, Rat!

The American hammer for big game. Nice loading. 🙏. ❤. I got 1bl varget here bought to have bc I saw a few loading for 35rem , 338win , 30-06 and 243win it's a old stand by powder for older guys.
@@cw2a I know! I almost bought a couple more pounds even though I don’t need it because I know it could get worse… but $48 for a pound of shotshell powder or like silhouette powder? Ouch. Almost cheaper to buy factory ammo!
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 it is lighter almost for sure. Larger bore and less powder both large contributors there. I dont feel the Whelen recoils much more then '06 or 7Mag.

I'm a 3 shot group guy myself. Saves projectiles and time. How do the accubonds in .358 open on deer? I've had up to 100 yard plus runners using them with heart and lung shots on deer in my 375 rum, and 30-06. Went back to plain old cup and core...core locts. Same shot placement and deer go down in their tracks most of the time vs the accubonds. Never got as food of groups with the accubonds either. Really finicky to get a group under moa.

@tripplebeards3427 Not sure why.... They are a premium bullet with a tapered jacket and bonded core? Have ypu tried the LR version? Those are supposed to expand at lower velocities.
@@cw2a I’ve only tried the .308 in 180 grain in my 30-06 and 300 RUM, and .375 in 260 grain in my 375 RUM all on deer. All had the same results. I remember the first buck I shot with 30-06. It stood there like it wasn’t hit at a little over a 100 yards. I watched blood leak out right from behind its front shoulder. I shot it again with a high shoulder shot to brake it down. It dropped at the 2nd shot. Walked up to it about 15 minutes later once the other deer cleared out. I thought it was dead. It was still alive and I had to finish it off. When I cleaned it, it had holes poked right through the lungs twice. The other deer I shot ran over 100 yards with them even with 375 and 300. Not a big fan. I bought them when they were introduced the first year. Maybe they’ve changed it to a softer alloy since who knows? Just lost all faith and confidence in the bullet after shooting a few deer with them I’ll just Stick to the plain old cup and core that come apart and dump a lot of energy. I do like the partitions they at least shed the front of their jacket and dump a lot of energy going through and still penetrate super deep. Imo they are more predictable how they expand and react on game than bonded bullets. The first gen Scirrocco did really good for me. The second gen they made tougher and don’t expand as violent.
@@tripplebeards3427 Conserning the 375, Im not surprised at all. Especially on smaller Animals. But in 30, yes that is suprising because speed altho gets penetration on hard targets, it also degrades and quickly degrades, cup n core bullets in soft targets. There is also one off's. Meaning often, once, anything can happen. I had a 120GD fail on me in a Grendel on a "huge" bodied New England buck. Tats a premium bonded bullet too. It went in and came apart but didnt have the mass to be immediately effective. YES, I recovered the buck. But ONLY because I dont give up when I shoot a animal. He went 6/700 years up hill and died on his feet bleeding where he fell. He mule kicked @ impact direct behind shoulder above center angle down not exit. One lung hit. No bullet pieces or parts recovered. Deer weighed 262# after 5 days of hanging. (Dressed) So easily 300 + live weight. I spoke with Speer techs and they said I pushed the bullet too fast. I estimated 2600+ fps impact velocity. Bullet was designed for 23/2500 fps. As it was purpose built for the Grendel. I feel a "ONE OFF".
@cw2a you maybe correct, especially for me as I've never used varget. You already know the powder behind my Whelen loads. It will be interesting. I have more Whelen ammo than I could ever shoot but if I was in need trying some of the Vhitivori might be interesting too.

I used some N140 on heavy cast with good effect in an old video.
