1:33 now we know why some English car companies didn't know how to build cars that would last...

Thank You James May! As a young man growing up in the States, we had Erector sets. They didn't have instructions, just the detail drawings. And I wore out the girders, flanges, drilled plates, threads on the bolts and learned how to replace/repair sprocket shafts. I loved it! How many young people get to build & understand a gantry crane or a long span steel truss bridge? Engineering at the impressionable perfect time of mind development. Good Toys? How about great learning experience. Too much Fun! Keep up the good work.

    James: "What is this!?"
Blonde girl: "It's wonderful! It's wonderful, that's what it is!"

I had a biology teacher that was like James May...relaxed yet informative, I did best in his class than I did in any of my other studies....aside from Math Lab where I taught and worked at my own pace.

    Child Labour at its finest

To be entirely fair, this likely would not have been a child's first Meccano playset, and they would have built up the experience and skills required to assemble it.

James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond were born in 1969. The crane set is 12 years older than them. But James May said that it doesn’t matter because they are 50 years younger.

Isn't this wonderful! The instruction ACTUALLY identify the part. Pully, Flange plate etc. Not like today where all one gets is a picture. A part connects to B part. Yet, in the 21st Century NO MODEL MAKER puts proper instructions on the WEB that can be down loaded. Those instructions identify the part. Where do you think engineers first learn about "things"? Today, you have to wait till you enter University to learn what that part is.To all you model makers out there write letters, email, smoke signals to your favourite model maker and tell them, don't ask, to put proper down loadable instructions on the WEB!

I get the point he's trying to make, but if he thinks building cranes is so great why did he make a career as a television presenter?
