Hello and welcome back to France for an Intercity review on the channel!
Today we will be riding on one of SNCF's old school Intercités loco-hauled services from Bordeaux to Marseille in the South of France. These trains may be old, but they're still great fun... Enjoy the video!

Oldschool, retro style comfortable loko hauled intercity train on a classic line through the french countryside.

I'm a frequent traveller on this line between Marseilles and Toulouse (twice per month at less), I don't know when you shooted your journey (in the summertime of course) but I have to precise that now the whole Intercity is WIFI connected for free you have to be registered with your ticket number, and you have sockets (one for 2 seats in second class and a socket per seat in first)
As a frequent traveller I'm using the 1st class coaches much more comfortable than second and quieter

Nice video! I like these older Corail coaches :-) Sad that there are only few classic loco hauled trains in France. And Bordeaux is a very nice city, I was stuck there in 2018 due to flight cancellation :-D
There's definitely worse places to be stuck, I mean, you could be in Paris 😂 They are great old coaches tbf mate 👍🏻
@@NonstopEurotrip, if you love old coaches pulled by locos, you should pay a visit to North America and take a train trip on either Amtrak in the United States or VIA Rail here in Canada (particularly the _Ocean_ [which goes from Montreal, Quebec, to Halifax, Nova Scotia] and the _Canadian_ [which goes from Toronto, Ontario-where I live and am typing this-to Vancouver, British Columbia]) ; the _Canadian_ consists of old passenger cars that date from the 1940's made by Budd. Of course, each trip takes days, but you'll be enjoying the scenery too much to complain. 😄

Great ! When I was young a similar train made the connection from Bordeaux to Milan and Venice once a day. I used to take it. It took 18 hours from Venice to Toulouse in a UIC-X coach without air conditioning... At destination I felt like today making an overseas travel , jet lag included... I miss it !
Yes, I remember that service, I took it once between Venice and Marseille, but it was even before the introduction of Corails: old green and green-beige coaches. And really too bad that Corails will be gone completely in a very near future.
Well. it may have been a mix of SNCF and FS coaches. I guess it was in 1977.
@@maxart3392 Exact ! 1977 to 1980 .. FS Italian coaches. Now I'm "expert" but at the time I wasn't able to recognise the ones with Minden boogies (a little bit noisy during the braking) with the ones with FIAT boogies much more recent and comfy ...

I see what you mean about SNCF catering prices. €4.80 for a Twix and a paper cup of coffee is outrageous. At that price I want the beans roasted in front of me!

You should have mentioned at Agen that there is a prune museum there, this being the ‘Capital of the Prune’! I visited many years ago when cycling in the area and it was more interesting than one might expect.

Takes me back. As a student in France in 1969-70, I used the Corail quite a lot (mainly between Paris Austerlitz and Brive-La-Gaillarde where I had to change on to a regional service, but also went down to Nice on one from Clermont-Ferrand). I remember the seats being more functional than comfortable. There was a buffet service (with excellent food and drink - well this was France remember!) and the toilets were very basic. The one on here looks a lot better.😁
I travelled on one of these from Paris to Toulouse and back in September last year. I found the experience to be a mixed bag. On the one hand, the trains look really great (especially the modernized coaches, which I had on the way from Paris to Toulouse) and the seats are comfortable (I found the modernized second class seats and the old second class seats equally comfortable by the way). On the other hand, I was shocked to find that there was no restaurant car for the almost 7 hour journey, which I had totally not anticipated and which caused me to be unable to have any kind of dinner on my route from Paris to Toulouse. I am more used to travelling on board of ICE and IC trains in Germany, and there almost all long distance trains (except the IC2 trains) have at least a bordbistro, and sometimes a complete bord restaurant. Next to that, the doors of these trains are very small and there is no level boarding, so if you're a bit older or even in a wheelchair or you're just travelling with a large amount of luggage.. well, good luck with that...
But well... I paid about 25 euros for each trip, so I guess that value for money on these IC trains in France is so amazing that I can't be too critical on their (relatively) small issues.

I still had a few slices of bread with me before the ride from Paris to Toulouse started and I had bought some sweets at Paris Austerlitz station, so it wasn't like I had nothing to eat for 7 hours... but I was very hungry when I finally arrived in Toulouse 😉
@@NonstopEurotrip It was still a nice and beautiful ride onboard a mostly comfortable train through beautiful French landscapes... so it wasn't that bad. And I probably should've checked whether French trains had a bord restaurant before going on this trip. But I made it in the end and I enjoyed most of the trip (before the final part where I really got hungry), so it wasn't all bad haha 😉
Lack of restaurant may be Covid related.

10:12 where my favourite plane came from, the Airbus A340! 10:25 I'm getting deja vu because the windows on the GWR 80x sets are usually dirty. It was never the case on their HST sets. Also great video, I like the occasional locomotive hauled train

I’d option to fork over the €8 for first class seat. Looks really comfy for 5.5 hour trip. Strange that there’s no cafe/dining car for a trip of that length. SCNF should be embarrassed of those dirty windows … after all, IMHO, one of the pleasures of rail travel is to see the countryside and Mediterranean Sea … but not through a scuzzy grimy film on the windows. 🤨

A proper train on an interesting journey. Unbeatable combination. These locos and coaching stock will be around for some time yet fortunately. Incidentally, I prefer your format of captions rather than dialogue. Keep up the good work.

Montpellier might be stunning , but I never had to encounter so many troubeling homeless and weird people as during my extended stay in that city. Such a shame.
And great trip ...miss these style of old school sets. Reminds me bit of the swiss old school intercities (which I believe are being refurbed soon too)

Marseille looks very Mediterranean. I should know, because I live in Malta: a small country where there are towns/villages called Marsa, Marsascala, Marsalforn and Marsaxlokk, which all have the same origin as Marseille.

They don’t run there anymore, but, if you are interested in Corail coach, you can still find some in Alsace, between Basel and Strasbourg under the name TER200. And they will be there for a while, so you have time to try them! Corail were all my childhood travel, in Intercité, TER and night corail, so many hours in these comfy chairs.

€8 is well worth the upgrade. Nice to see a trolley service even if you think it's costly. No more expensive than here in Ireland to be fair. Haven't you done at least part of the trip before?

Yeah from Montpellier we followed the line in the opposite direction from when I did Nîmes to Portbou. Tell the story then 😂
Awesome video! Indeed apparently the BB 7200s no longer run this route, replaced by BB 26000, someone can probably confirm this. Thankfully there hasn’t been an announced replacement for the Corails on this route, so they’ll be around for a while still😁
Too bad especially considering that not long ago the good old Jaquemins were stil in use for the services around Toulouse.

just found your reports nice video brings back memories of when i worked the trolley service on trains that came through valence i'd go down to perpignan or marseille ,cannes etc even back then the prices were very steep !! LOL strange it costs less to do bordeaux /marseille than the 3 hours it take me to get down to marseille from valence and it is also cheaper if i get a tgv takes an hour but the tgv station is 15 mins on a coach from the main station here ,to your friend trainlagged theses corails will be around a long time as they are reinterducing corail trains from Paris to Lyon and will bring more routes back this year

Rode the train from Paris to Bordeaux with a camping group ca. 1963. We were not wanted in the regular train. Coaches from the 1930’s were added with numerous doors. The train was very fast. The brakes on the old coaches stunk and smoked. It was a great trip.

When they were first built these Corail SNCF Coaches are used on Paris Nord-Brussels Midi Aachen-Koln-Dusseldorf-Duisburg-Essen Bochum Dortmund Hannover Helmstedt West Germany Border Station with DDR Marienborn Magdeburg Potsdam West Berlin Zoo. Paris Est to West Berlin Coral coach used Forbach Saarbrücken as the French West German Border Station then Bebra West Germany Border Station via Frankfurt Am Main. East Germany Gerstungen (Border Station) Erfurt Leipzig Berlin

I love Corail train set, specially these with Alsace refurbishment (Trains Fluo on the TER 200 Strasbourg Basel, every 30 minutes at 200 km/h)
This train was in the news this week, on thuesday 22 february.
- IC service had 90 minutes delayed;
- at Narbonne station, the staff indicate passenger to travel with a regional train instead to arrived earlier;
- train staff was informed about theses "rebooked passengers" on bord the regional train;
- at Marseille station, ticket checked at the arrival;
- rebooked passengers were told that thier ticket were unavalaible on the regional train and get 140 euro fine !
- the company is investigating but no excuse or reimbursed at the moment.
SNCF aren't known for their customer service...
European train stations are classics! I believe I would travel in 2nd class if I was in a quiet car. I don't like cell phone chatter. I sit in designated quiet cars here in the US.

Great video as always 😄and definitely, loved the retro interior of the coach but I do think SNCF should do some maintenance work on the exterior, they must pay attention to these trains too like they do on high speed trains. And like John Hartley said, I too don’t understand these guys and why do they like to do their so called art on the trains.
Thanks mate! Yeah the windows and graffiti annoy me too, and it's usually France and Italy! But I do like the old school trains, especially as they won't be around forever! 😄

SNCF Corail coaches are probably the most comfortable coaches in the world. Up there, with CP Sorefame, NSB B3 and B5 and VIA Rail older stock. If there is a choice, I would always opt for these loco hauled trains with Corail stock. Not so keen on the TGV, and I really hate the new multiple units.
You were lucky. Trains between Bordeaux and Marseille can often loose 2 hours .I have been no less than 20 minutes late.

Hello from France 🇫🇷 You can test like me historical line from Paris to Lyon, the Burgundy area sets with SNCF old stock of Corail trains too. Before TGV it was the uniq way between theses two majors French cities on the so called Imperial line. The journey was shorter than today because in the past there was no such stops like today in medium cities. Before : Paris/Dijon/Chalon/Macon and Lyon. Now : Paris/Sens/Joigny/Laroche M./Saint-Florentin/Tonnerre/Nuits.R/Monbard/Alesia/DIJON/Beaune/Chagny/CHALON s.S/Tournus/MACON/Belleville s.S/Villefranche s.S/Saint-Germain M.O and Lyon. It’s too long and the fare is sometime not so cheap in comparaison and there is no dîner car too. Even a trolley because it’s not an exactly an Intercity trip. But try it in during a sunny day in autumn and you will see a perfect view of burgundy like never, with fire on trees, if windows are clean 😅
Edit : I forgot to say it’s almost a 6 hours journey with this TER (Train Express Regional) and departure is at Paris-Austerlitz station. Don’t forget drink and food and an additional battery for your devices 😅

In the "good old days" the long-haul trains in Europe used to have COMPARTMENTS. That was much nicer than what they have today - one large space with seats one next to the other. Makes you feel like you're on a commuter train riding to work. I don't like it.
The UK still uses compartments on Loco Hauled services between Crewe-Glasgow, Livepool-Hull and Reading-Manchester

I disagree... I don't like to be in a small room with people I don't know for a longer period of time. At least in normal coaches the people are spread out over quite a spacious area, but if you are in compartment for 6 people, even if only 2 or 3 seats are ocuppied, it already feels weird and uncomfortable when travelling alone.. Maybe compartments are nice when travelling with a family of 4 or 5 and you have a compartment for you and your family members.. but when travelling alone or as a couple, more or less being locked up with random strangers in a small room doesn't sound like my idea of a pleasant journey.
Also, compartments can generally only fit 6 people instead of 8 in the same space if you hadn't compartments, so if the train is completely packed, not only will you be in a small space with strangers (if you're lucky) you'll also have to stand because you don't have a seat (if you're unlucky).
And don't get me started on how wheelchair users are supposed to use these compartments... right...
So no, I think it is best if a train has no compartments, or maybe only a very small section of compartments in first class (where people are more likely to have a whole compartment for themselves)..
Compartments have three seats over the width of the carriage. The ones with the large open space have four. It's a no-brainer really if you're a train company.
Having said that, on our honeymoon in 2001, my wife and I travelled from Rome to Florence, Florence to Venice, Venice to Milan, and back to Rome. All of the trips were in ETR500 high-speed trains without compartments, except for the trip from Venice to Milan: that was loco-hauled (one of those Italian articulated locos) and we had a compartment for most of the trip. That was the most memorable train journey of that honeymoon, just the two of us, either reading a book (no smartphones in 2001), or looking out the window, or admiring my beautiful wife.

Thanks for posting. The Corail are, from my experience, very comfortable and smooth running - they put the class 800s on the line between Paddington to Bristol to shame. I like the curtains - blinds are such a bad idea as you have to negotiate with the next seat. Personally I would keep the Corail coaches, if you have something as good as this why get rid of them - unless they are proving very expensive to maintain. I think that the SNCF needs to improve their presentation. It is amazing that a country renowned for its food should have such a poor offering on its trains. As you highlight dirty windows are not good. Also the terrible graffiti, this should not be tolerated. Finally the colours of the coaches are a bit of a hotchpotch and painting the locomotive in overall silver when they originally had such dynamic colour schemes is sad.

I do recall getting off the train in Marseille (TGV from Paris), stepping outside the station and at the top of those steps thinking "looks great but smells like a public toilet!". Not the greatest first impression I've had of a city.

Enjoyable video, thanks. What a shame about those very dirty windows - shame on SNCF. I'd definitely upgrade to 1st class for a 6 hour journey, given the relatively small difference in price. Here in the UK the price difference between Standard (2nd) class and First class is usually considerably more, unless you can get an advanced booking deal. It's a shame that so many 'classic' loco hauled services are disappearing, especially as their successors are often not as comfortable (e.g. the replacement of the loco-hauled LNER Mk4 coaches by the Azumas on the London to Scotland East Coast route).
At least you still get complimentary food on long distance UK First Class though 😊

I have been travel Cherbourg-Caen, that train maximal speed 200 km/h.I was travel more between Strasbourg-Paris. Was hauled with BB 15000. I think it would be time to buy new locomotives for the French railways

This is old school? In Czech Republic that is an EuroCity standard, and also in Austria.
The majority of Czech and Austrian EC coaches are much newer, or have been refurbished

These Intercités trains could probably go faster, but because they are running on SNCF's 1,500 V DC overhead power, are limited to 160 km/h (99 mph) at best.

Well, within two days, we would have crossed paths, we took the same line on July 20 from Toulouse to Marseille. Otherwise, we took the same train from Marseille to Toulouse in October. This line is a line of suffering for me, because of a particular place in Toulouse where certain things happen that I cannot develop here. Otherwise, I don't like these old trains, I prefer modern trains!!! And 26 euros, you paid cheap, it's given. I forgot to ask you: what does the word "cheezy" mean? My translator can't translate. 12:20-This little tidbit about this new station in Nimes reminds me of the complaints being made about the ( _possible_ ) new train station being built (in an old abandoned shopping mall) in Houston for the Texas Central HSR system that's planned for Texas (complaints about it were made in the comments section of this video: ua-cam.com/video/l3BGHLjkOrM/v-deo.html )

What is it about SNCF and their dirty windows? They well deserve their poor reputation for this. As for the graffiti, I don''t understand the need for some people to feel compelled to desecrate or defile property. It isn't art, and clearly their one brain cell isn't connected to another. The seats looked great, and at least a trolley service was offered - better than nothing, but on a six hour journey one might have expected to see a buffet car at least. No typos this week - well done you!

@@NonstopEurotrip Here's a thought - rather than showing a close up of your knees - nice as they are - and flapping your hand to show the legroom available, buy yourself a small retractable tape measure and show the width of the seat, and the distance from the edge of your seat to the back of the one in front. Better do it in cm and inches to keep everyone happy, but it would give a true measurement for your viewers. As soon as I can think of a way to show the springiness and comfort of the seats I'll get back to you. You may even end up setting a trend!
