The rising sun symbol on the Thumbnail is pretty disgusting by the way - Why don't you educate yourself on the "Rising Sun symbol" and its implications in East Asian and South Asian history? It's kind of like a Nazi swastika symbol.
That's some myth considering even the WB backs it. This channel has been making content on China for a long time, but lately it seems you're following the China Uncensored route for commercial success.
I feel that it would help if this video clarified what it meant by "Capitalism", "Socialism" and "Communism", since people have conflicting ideas of what those mean.
He would have to extend the video by several hours and probably still come up short in the minds of many. Getting a consensus of people to agree on those definitions is no easy task.
Exactly- China is about as socialist as the US is capitalist. No country has ever been in the "ultimate form" of any ideology. Everything's a mix based on a given country's culture, history, and location.
@@BuddyLee23 Not at all true. There are many different conceptions of these ideas and you can go into enormous depth discussing these conceptions, but there is no reason to. These conceptions all have specific things in common which is why the words in question are even useful enough to keep using. Capitalism is an economic system defined by individual/private ownership of capital (among other assets). Socialism stands as the inverse of capitalism. Meaning that it is defined by it's lack of private or individual ownership of capital. In socialism, capital is not owned/controlled by individuals or small private groups, but is instead owned and operated *democratically*. You can go into an enormous rabbit hole discussing the many specific ways of doing this democratic ownership, but if workers control their place of work by default in their economic system, the economic system where the worker resides can be fairly called socialism. Communism is a bigger problem to neatly define because it isn't really an economic system like the previous two. Communism describes not only the economic system of the nation but also the society itself beyond the economy. The specifics of which are a rabbit hole in of themselves but there's no need to dive into that because there can be no (edited to add the word "no" here) good faith debate around whether any nation period has ever achieved communism because they simply have not. I honestly despise this sentiment of "oh they couldn't possibly define three words they're just too complicated only big brains like mine get it go read sixty books and maybe you'll understand." It poisons the well as much as people who say of any of these systems that they're evil in bad faith.
Most people don’t understand the difference. Capitalism is private ownership, so one person usually holding total control over his property and everyone who helps him. Socialism is cooperative ownership. Meaning a pure democracy, or a partnership type relationship towards property. Its owned collectively by the members who maintain and work it. Communism is one big collective cooperative, it’s basically when all people can agree to share and trade everything and abolish the use of money, government, class division etc. and live in harmony with one another.
@@BuddyLee23 those definitions do have technical definitions though. communism is a marxist term, and capitalism has objective conditions. describing them in theory is easy, assessing how real economies line up against them is difficult.
I would really enjoy a similar video on Vietnam, which while not a democratic state, does seem to follow socialism more closely than one would expect. The use of land leases (a back door LVT) and the high prevalence of CO-OPs in the Market place is particularly interesting.
@@Ruiseal Worker owned cooperatives Instead of being state-owned they're owned and controlled by the workers working in the enterprise in some way or another. It is considered a form of market socialism and most socialists describe it as cutting the middleman capitalist out of the equation altogether without changing market dynamics all that much. There are many cooperatives around the world, including places like the US so it's not really a ML or Maoist thing, just something co-opted by the left as a decent way of getting real economic power.
There are elections with multiple parties but if you step too far out of line the government will harrass you to drop out of the race. So its democratic but with many asterisks, though that couold be said of the US. They even have a lot of free spech at local government meetings where you can air your grevances but there are always limits. Vietnam opened up capitalism but also made it super easy to form a union, something neither Lenin nor Deng did. Their constitution states that in 2050 they are shifting to a classless stateless society after they build up their education and infrastructure as marx predicted. This should lead to some really interesting outcomes in the future. Their sconomic isolation from the rest of the world and their their ties to the US prior to us throwing them under the bus to the French is why they wewre able to maintain marxist purity unlike the stalinist style nations.
I think this video is relatively objective so thx for that, however I have lived in China for more than 10 years and there are a few things that I know are 100% wrong. As an example, (and I've seen so many misunderstandings of this), to clarify you CAN move from anywhere to anywhere in China, including from nowhere in Gansu to metro Shanghai, and you WILL have access to its public schools, jobs, resources etc. As a matter of fact, I went to a public middle/high school in Beijing and almost half of my class did not have a Beijing Hukou. The only difference is that you need to try harder and go through a bit more complicated procedure. It is like an ethnic majority competing for a job with a First Nation candidate, if all else equal, the job will be given to the latter. Another common mistake, is thinking that high speed rails connecting nowhere to nowhere are useless. You need to keep in mind that even the most remote towns in the country might host millions of people. Those cities you've never heard of are not NOWHERE. Additionally, it helps bridge the gap between remote (and often minority-populated) towns with the coast, and help these places develop economically. I realize that a lot of time people like criticizing stuff, but to be honest, likely nobody that watched this video has had any experience leading a 1.5-billion-people country, or even a 400-million-people country like America. There is no political or economical system that is "perfect", as long as it suits the mainstream culture, it's fine.
Agreed. High speed trains and transit between rural areas and wealthy coastal cities are crucial if you want to evenly distribute economic gains. It allows migrant workers and young students to access opportunities in more privileged areas while remitting money, resources, and trained workers back home. Eventually it develops bedroom cities, alleviates urban congestion, and gives rise to new economic centers
There is a saying in China, 摸着石头过河, that translates to “cross the river by feeling the stones”. It is generally attributed to Deng Xiaoping, who used it as a metaphor to describe China’s approach towards the reform and opening (改革开放)which kicked off at the end of the 1970s.
I feel that a lot of people who criticise Chinese socialism do not understand this, though I myself am no expert. Compare Lenin: "The progressive historical role of capitalism may be summed up in two brief propositions: increase in the productive forces of social labour, and the socialisation of that labour." Marx himself acknowledged that this increase in productive forces was an essential step on the road to socialism. As long as China can be seen to keep one eye on the last few words of that quote, and - especially recently - I believe it can, then I will wish them all the best.
Tbh so many CPC leaders always speak in poetic terms or riddles and I sometimes don’t understand their metaphors lMao. Like what does that even mean??? Feed the rocks? The quote about “it doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice” at least makes sense. I have that prob with Xi granted it’s a wholly different language being translated but his vague sayings are sometimes hard to grasp.
Some facts: 1. Working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week has been common in many Chinese private companies and enterprises, despite there are laws restricting 8 hours of working per day. 2. Ma Yun(Jack Ma), has been fined over 18 billion CNY (1dollar≈6CNY) for monopolizing the market in 2021. This guy, together with Ma Huateng (head of tencent), are the two most infamous entrepreneurs in China. (If you are interested in this part you can ask some video gamers around you, they could tell you what the f#%k have Tencent done to the game industry) 3. Some TV show companies are accused of SELLING Chinese cultural heritages and patents to other countries just for more profit. 4. House prices are becoming unreasonably high in most cities in China, thanks to the real estate agencies. Some of you may have thought that many Chinese cannot buy houses because of our massive population. No. We've got plenty of houses. They are just too expensive for us. (A joke in China: If you wanna buy a house in Shanghai, you have to work from the beginning of humanity to present) Many people hate my country because it is a Socialist state, but the true fact is that a lot of young people believe socialism is the only way to rescue them, because it is this 'invisible' capitalism which has caused most of the problems.
Facts. I'm happy to see that finally there is a mainstream youtube channel discussing the problem of whether China is still socialist. But the video is still somewhat superficial. For example, the leftist comebacks would be a lot more reasonable if the video could inform the audiences that during the recent years, the skyrocketing house prices, deteriorating worker's rights, increasing amount of billionaires and the inequality between the rich and poor had forced young people to reflect on the "glorious achievements“ of the open and reform, and seek for solutions from the Mao era.
Do you have to use Mao? There are probably better Socialists to study to be honest. Like, from an uninformed Westerners perspective, it seems like Mao is as responsible for China's State-Capitalist economy, as Deng or Xi Jinping. Did Mao build any substantial Democratic institutions that empowered the Chinese proletariat? Did he encourage Unions or Workers Councils? From where I sit, the biggest obstacle to the Chinese proletariat owning the means of production, is the Totalitarian Regime of the CCP.
@@caad5258 I agree that Mao isn't perfect, but after all he's the greatest socialist in China, and his name is respected, or even enshrined, throughout China. And China isn't really ready for Scandinavian Democratic socialism and whatnot, since these countries are far more rich in terms of GDP per capita and have much less people. Many people in China are actually seeing the cultural revolution period as more democratic than now, for people could openly criticize their bosses or even revisionist officials of the party, such as Liu Shaoqi or Deng Xiaoping. In some cases the factory was run entirely by workers as this documentary shows ua-cam.com/video/7fPGI64eqAI/v-deo.html. Mao's CCP was still totalitarian, but people would find it much more appealing than modern day CCP because it actually championed the right of the workers, and claimed that the working class should lead everything.

I'm a Chinese, but THX for providing a foreigner's view. Some mistakes, especially the Hukou, looks ineviable for non-locals, but on the whole, this is good.
Kfc & McDonalds are not local Chinese brands. They got a lot of local competitors. People in their 40s or 50s are sometimes not used to the tastes of hamburger and fried chicken.
only if they were highly regulated like in europe. otherwise it would just cause mass harm to the population like they do in USA. not only that but those businesses push for cultures to become reliant on them over real cooked food through corrupting and pressuring governments to allow them buy up and close out grocery stores
It's not dumb, you're totally right, the total number has not that much meaning alone. I think the number of McDonald's restaurants per million citizens is much more meaningful. And in this metric China is very far off with their 2.5 McD's per 1M citizens. For comparison, Brazil has 4.92, Italy 10.59, Germany 18.56, Japan 22.93 and the USA, of course leading the chart (ignoring microstates with < 10 McD's), has 40.08 McDonald's restaurants per million citizens.
I watched the video on Nebula and I was wondering why would it be de-monetized. Then I found the "Advertiser-friendly content guidelines" for UA-cam. Rules for "Shocking content", "Hateful & derogatory content", "Controversial issues", and "Sensitive events". None by itself would exactly flag the video, but a takedown would probably stand by mentioning those rules. It is sad that de-monetization acts as a pseudo-sensorship for UA-cam. I guess it is intrinsic of ad-based platforms, not UA-cams fault necessarily. But sad nonetheless.
Realistically, if the advertisers understood how an ad-based platform worked it wouldn't be an issue. It is impossible to manage a content network this large and not have ads on "unsavory" things.
It's only censorship for people that don't have the ability to every once in a while take the hit on producing something that makes less money. For those that have large staffs that help with producing the video, it becomes very hard to justify because there are a lot of mouths being fed from that advertising revenue, and the owner would have to dip deep into his pocket to pay their wages with content that wouldn't make much money. But what that tells you is that the owners are willing to compromise their integrity so long as they can earn more money. If anyone complains about demonetization, they're simply uninterested in making the best possible content, but only making money. I personally work a job much below what I might possibly earn, because it makes enough to pay the bills, I get treated with a lot of respect, and I never have to compromise my principles. That makes me much happier than having a larger investment portfolio.
@@stevenglowacki8576 It's still censorship in the sense that if a video gets age restricted/demonetized, it loses a large amount of the potential audience it can reach and it affects how they appear in recommendations. It's not an exaggeration to say a video can lose more than half of views it would normally receive due once it gets demonetized and age restricted. So if a channel's goals were to spread a message or educate to as large an audience as possible, even regardless of any monetary benefit, they would still need to cut content in order to stay with youtube's rules and not be restricted by the algorithms.
just want to rate it 1/5. A perfect example of "rationalization" -- presenting evidence, then interpretation, but the interpretation doesn't at all follow from evidence.
Moving within China doesn't result in losing access to public utilities. After like five minutes of googling, it's just a bunch of permit application-related processes, while the video made it seem like moving between towns is illegal. Not showing sources *in the video* for such strong claims is pretty bad for credibility, and going through the whole list of sources without any timestamps or pointers is just awful and gives the illusion of transparency
Yup. There are restrictions, but it's way more nuanced than what the video makes out. It's mostly to prevent large uncontrolled migrations to large cities like you see in LA, SF, and Seattle with large homeless populations everywhere. I got my hukou transferred with a 5 minute trip. Lierally no one over the age of 30 likely had a Shenzhen hukou when they were born.

That's the thing people don't understand about us Chinese, is that it doesn't matter if China is or isn't socialist...it still is controlled by the Chinese Communist Party with an iron fist, that hasn't changed since Mao's day. In fact I would say during Xi Jinping it has gotten worse, and what's more it's more public but still no one changes anything so I think he is emboldened by that fact
This video is disappointing because it only talks about the politics of the leadership and doesn't analyze the actual features of China's existing economic system. For example, it should have evaluated the market capitalization of state-owned enterprises, the size and scope of state capital and equity, the extent to which major firms are coordinated by industrial policies and planning, and the continued role (albeit in more indicative rather than directive) of strategic five-year plans in guiding overall economic development. The video could and should have talked about how, despite being mainly profit-driven entities, many large (majority state-owned) firms often pursue loss-making projects that end up enhancing the potential for growth in the long-term (building infrastructure in unprofitable poor areas, for example). Other areas relevant to the "socialism" and "capitalism" divide is land ownership in China, the role of non-state cooperatives (especially in agriculture), the role (or lack therof) of employee management in firms, and workers' rights including work hours and a general trend toward improved work-life balance and living standards. I think the conclusion would be that, yes, China's economy is more socialist in the sense of "market socialism" (they actually call their system a socialist market economy) than many Westerners have been led to believe. But it is still a developing economy moving towards socialism, moving through a capitalist phase of development.
If you know so much about it, make your own video. Don’t come at this one with the veneer of academic criticism because it didn’t agree with your ideology.
@@sambutton8494 There was no "ideology" here, just cold hard analysis. Ideology is driven toward an end; this video focused excessively on ideology rather than systems... despite that, PolyMatter's conclusion was basically the same as mine. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, are you?
I think you are conflating two ideologies within China and the CCP for one. Its not socialism that is making a revival nowadays, its nationalism. For Xi its the "rejuvination of the country" that he wants, or as his predecessor put it they don't want socialism but rather a "harmonious society". They want to cement the class rule with ever increasing power, not abolish classes altogether. Thats why they are still incarcerating leftist students who read Marx too literally. Thats why they still break down any attempt of non-state organized unions. Thats why they still keep a tight grip over the party entrances, keeping out leftists while letting in red princlings everywhere.
Yeah this explanation makes a lot of sense, because the video does not really explain what exactly is the preferred policies of Xi and how they are leftist and in continuity with Mao. Yes Xi eliminated the ultra-capitalist members of the party but that doesn't by default mean he has leftist ambition. Honestly it feels like the video is missing something towards the end.
@@am.i.cognizant9981 Yep. Most of the PolyMatter videos lately feel that way to me. Just cut off with no conclusion, ending with an ad. Really unfortunate.
Socialism with Chinese characteristics means one thing, CPC wants the legitimacy to carry out the policies regardless of whether the policy is socialism or capitalism. what matters is not whether China is socialist or not. what matters is that China has a non-western political system and the system works, which can be a strong deny of the westcentrism and make CPC regain the legitimacy to run its policies. USSR's fall led to a consequence that all non-western (or more precisely, non-American) practices were at fault in some's thoughts (including some CPC members in charge) in China. It actually damages CPC's political independence, especially when China was in poor economic conditions.

You mentioned Xi's fight against corruption, or that leftists gained some political ground in the late 2000s, and vaguely remarked that the CCP needs to brand itself as the guide towards socialism to justify its power to the populace. So, how exactly did these shifts translate into policy that aims at actually leading to socialism? TLDR; where are China's modern "socialist" policies? The video mentions none.

While his video was pretty objective, I must point out how flawed was his explaination on Chinas household registry or hukou system. It was not “where your birthplace was all that matters and if you move you cant enjoy public benefits” It’s merely a record of your employment history associated with your work unit, or danwei in Chinese . Anyone can enjoy access to these services anywhere in the country as long as they have a job at the location of their residence. So in otherwords this is a policy designed to get old people out of big cities and create space for younger and more productive population . While westerners won’t necessarily like it, but hey, we got 800 million people to lift out of poverty, gotta do it one by one
It will probably make sense if you see China as a more unified European Union. Within the Union sure you can travel around freely, but to access each province (EU country)'s public welfare, you need to be their local Hukou (Citizen)
@CK Lim i dont see the validity of your comments, not all top tier cities are like that, namely shenzhen. And also, yes that is exactly what I meant by moving younger & more producitve population into these cities. Certain people are more productive in these fourth/fifth tier cities, of which that is where most of China's industries are located in. While others strive in big cities, its an efficient system of resource allocation, ofc with certain freedoms curtailed, but obviously westerner like you wont understand
Except China didn't get 800 million people out of poverty. All they did was lower their poverty line. These 800 million people live on less than $3 a day, while prices are only going up. This people are effectively even poorer than they were a few years ago. You can clearly see this if you travel outside of any 1st tier city. China is full of poor villages where people have dirt floors in their home. China's GDP per capita is lower than many African countries. The truth is only a select few people got really rich in China while the vast majority of people become poorer.
@@deebil8099 i dont think a lot of African countries have a gdp higher than 12k USD a year... and yes please keep that up, your ignorant attitude is the best medicine for China's economic development
Got to give credit to the maker of this video. It's no easy task to summarize the modern history of any particular country in a 20 min video, let alone China, but the author obviously did his homework to give it a nice try. It's a relatively unbiased and objective analysis, thanks.
it's not that people have different ideas and opinions of what it means, they mostly have no idea and have never even read a real scientific book on these themes and take all their information from fox news and other capitalist propaganda channels
It seems to me that few outside of China know what's going on... Can't believe people still ask how I access youtube or play the social credit meme. No one has properly addressed our grievances.
I am actually very dissatisfied with the fact that Marxist socialism started in Europe, but you gave it up. I would rather be sucked by capitalists than fight for revolution. It's like boiling a frog in warm water. Slowly unable to breathe. I'm a Chinese, and I watched that Spanish TV show about robbing the bank and printing money to give to the poor. It seems to be popular all over the world. Why is this? Where there is oppression, there is resistance.
The analysis in the video seems pretty shallow and I don't really see how this answers the very question in the title. I think it's right to point out how Chinese politics have evolved between the different leaders but again, the way that it has been discussed here (in terms of moving away from Maoism or getting back to it) doesn't say much about whether China is socialist or not. Especially because I think that while they have a capitalist approach to a lot of things that started with the opening up, the chinese state also take some decisions that are quite different from a obviously capitalist country like America (such as their crackdown on certain big corporations). Also, I think it would be interesting to define what exactly you mean by socialism if you're trying to say that China isn't it. Not that I think that China is socialist per se, I just think the video didn't really do a good job at explaining why it wouldn't be? Also, some concepts probably would need more explaining such as the hukou system and what the 5-year plans entail. So, in short, the video falls a bit flat to me, your other videos on China were way more cohesive as you were going deep into a specific issue and taking more time to explore what the issues is and what the consequences are.
These guys are probably paid by the CIA or Falun Gong. Their youtube ads are everywhere. The US government spends $300 million a year on propagandas against China.
Very important to understand that Socialism is a platform rather than one clear ideology. For example Adolf Hitler saw himself and his party as Socialists as Nationalist-Socialists or in today's wording as Socialism with German racial Characteristics, and so instead of order of society by economic-social standing as workers, farmers, land owners and so on, Hitler instead saw Socialist order by race, pure white Aryans as the top of society and different cultures or mixes of race below them until the bottom as people who do not have a home country or homeland which at the time were the Jewish people who of course did establish a country not long after the end of WW2 which just goes to show had stupid Socialism is. Is Socialism with Chinese characteristics any different? No. It is still using the same old structure of Socialism with China's own view of order of society by connections, power and influence which is why when the Chinese Communist Party see someone become popular in China and famous that is not inside the Socialist ranks they take forceful action because they are playing outside of the game, famous people who are now in prison or dead or rotting away in Qincheng or Tilanqiao Prisons people like Jack Ma, Edison Chen, Kris Wu, Gao Xiaosong and so so so many other good and talented and gifted people just because they became famous and gained influence which is in competition with the Chinese Socialist order. This goes to show how stupid and old and bad Socialism is, it is an old broken system from an old world and China is stuck to it until it can break free.
11:10 I'm no expert on China, but I dunno about Deng's faction being so adamant about speedy political reform, Deng himself greenlit the suppression of Tiananmen and it was his withdrawal of political cover for Zhao Ziyang's, arguably the most liberal of reformers, downfall. I'd argue there was moreso a conclusion that a "Chinese glasnost" wasn't happening. But then again, I'm no expert on this
I do feel like the failure the mention the more progressive reformers of the 80s, i.e. Hu Yaobang and Zhao Ziyang misrepresents the extent to which political reforms seemed viable in the 80s. The video also represents Deng's faction as pretty much the most reformist faction in the CCP in the 80s, which is definitely not the case.
Zhao/Hu was in Deng’s faction until late 1980s. Zhao was supposed to be Deng’s successor. So it is wrong for you to assume they are in separate faction. They are not.
@@achmedaan In early 1980s Deng is in favor of political and economical reforms. The problem came in late 1980s from USSR. Seeing how USSR is collapsing after political reform. Deng fear China would suffer the same fate, thus he grow more conservative on the political reform. But remained open on economic reform.
BE AWARE! The Hells Angels and Bloods alliance heads are having talks while you are reading this about their monopole in North America. They want to eradicate the Tai Huen Chai, know as the big circle, and the 14K in the continent. The goal is to overtake all of their activities in the territory. some people in the US still solely believe that China is still a communist country... There are many anti-china political campaigns that leverage these innately vague terms to work towards their favor. I strongly agree with the opening statement, it really doesn't matter what color of the cat is. Somewhere down the decades of debate, we just began to forget what these "isms" are supposed to do and serve for.
It's less about the color of the cat and more about who is that cat's owner? If it's the government, it's communism. If the cat is owned by a private company that is still run by the government, it is still communism. If the cat is owned by a private company, run by private personnel, who's assets, market value, and major business decisions are still determined by the government, it is STILL communism. So, no, it's not a semantics game, those "some people" in the U.S. know what has changed and what hasn't changed.
@Stephen lee it's so obvious the Chinese people have Communist system in itself from parents to their kids they act brazenly communist, but they also works with socialist like quite the entire europe but different, basicly the state owned the land but it is taxless for the people.. Capitalist is already forseeable from their money oriented society..
It is still as it is written in it's constitution and what Biden mentioned about Xi Jinping is a dictator is true as the PRC constitution clearly written - Chapter I General Principles Article 1 The People’s Republic of China is a socialist state under the people’s democratic dictatorship led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants. The socialist system is the basic system of the People’s Republic of China. Disruption of the socialist system by any organization or individual is prohibited.
Imo the nebula docs from many of the creators involved is worth the price considering it's less per month than exclusive content from a single creator on patreon. Also calling it a paywall when it's content that wouldn't be supported by the UA-cam algorithm is not a great take, considering you enjoy their content and assumably think they should be compensated fairly
Honestly totally worth it, especially if you like Half as Interesting, or Wendover Productions. Not sponsored lol but best 15 dollars I’ve spent all year😂

The success of nebula & curiosity is entirely YT's fault - if YT didn't have such backwards monetisation policies then Nebula/Curiosity probably wouldn't exist. Nebula is only great because content creators are free to actually create content on there.
So far, this is the only video I saw made by non-Chinese pointing out that China is a capitalized country proclaims itself as a socialism one. But to say Xi Jinping is bringing back Maoism is just as wrong as saying China is a socialism country tbh. One of the key ideas of Maoism is to use continued revolutions to prevent bourgeoisies from taking power again. To attain this goal, people must be encouraged to criticize or even replace their government if they find it incapable, corrupted or leaning towards bourgeoisies, like what they did in the culture revolution. However, after Xi came into power, censorship was even stricter than before. Apparently what Xi and his government’s doing is just the opposite of Maoism. One of the consensus of Chinese new leftists is that Xi is using Mao to promote his nationalism in order to hide the accumulated internal conflicts between different social classes and continue to develop bureaucratic capitalism in China. There are only liberal capitalism vs bureaucratic capitalism among those governors, not likely someone really believe in Maoism.
I bought the nebula package and it really lacks the option to filter only exclusives. As it is I’m watching your videos on UA-cam and to be honest I cannot be bothered to check nebula and see which videos I’ve seen and which I didn’t. Don’t try to supplant UA-cam, you will fail at that.

@@SelfProclaimedEmperor that is extreme govt intervention. The govt meddled with the economy by keeping interest rates artificially low. This encouraged excessive borrowing and leveraging.
As Vijay Prashad said: Is China socialist or capitalist is a non-Marxian question; establishing socialism is a process, not an event. China took the route of allowing capitalism to enter in order to advance its productive forces, after which it will start transitioning more and more into a socialist nation with a socialist society. Even in Xi Jinping’s book - The Governance of China - he states that China is still in the very beginning of developing socialism and it will stay that for a long time; one of the first major milestones to reach being the year 2049, which is over two decades from today
It can only be said that you do not understand China. If we discuss "whether China is capitalist or socialist" in the context of China, the answer is socialism with Chinese characteristics. Emphasizing that socialism is a stage rather than just a social nature is inherently Deng Xiaopingism. In the Marxist-Leninist tradition, socialism and capitalism are issues of a social nature. "Socialism is a process", this is generally the view of the Socialist International. The Comintern opposed this view, and Chinese Marxists inherited from the Comintern also disagreed with this statement. Deng Xiaoping created the rhetoric of "the primary stage of socialism", which shows that socialism is both a social nature and a stage process.
“Is China socialist or capitalist is a non-Marxian question”简直可笑,如果这不是个意识形态问题,邓希贤难道会发明“猫论”和“市场手段论”吗?你以为你比邓公聪明吗?要是列宁没批判过伯恩施坦和考茨基,他倒是会改成那个Vijay Prashad说的样子。
Our political textbooks say so, a little simplified. Communism distributes value according to needs. Socialism distributes value according to labor. Capitalism distributes value according to capital.
I love how this video somehow succeeds in the most watered down, nonsensical analysis of China. I don't think I understood a single point from your mouth and I have done papers on China and it's politics from 2005-2016. How is this even possible. This is like the embodiment of empty calories in the form of a video.
Not to mention making such a ridiculous claim as the 800 million figure coming out of poverty being fake news and not even elaborating on it one bit lol
One problem with the video is that when Chinese officials and propaganda talk about left and right, they generally mean conservatives/authoritarians on the left and liberals on the right. So when there’s talk in China about the country turning left it means more authoritarian, not necessarily more socialist. Its best using terms such as state-control vs laissez-faire than simply left vs right
In Chinese internet, when we talk about "left", it more prefer as liberal, socialist, democratic and proletarian positions, and the right means that conservatives, capitalism, anti-industrialization and anti-change. And yes, the left is rising, but not official. In Chinese internet, there have a lot of political debates about left and right among Zhihu and Bilibili. In addition, the debate such as "zero-covid" against "coexist with covid", “Russia invades Ukraine” against “Russia defends the motherland” are everywhere.
Interesting idea but Not really, ‘left’ always means socialism(sometimes more radical), liberal(reform but not changing the basic ‘rule’ of world), and conservatives and nationalism always are considered ‘right’, China uses the same spectrum to the world. When talks in China about turning left, they mostly refer to socialism ideology and some strict economic policies. But not unnecessarily authoritarian, u know Chinese right wings may be even more authoritative 😂( e.g Tiananmen event and ‘严打‘ etc.). The emphasis referring to ’left’ is on the radicalness, with a memory of torrid and chaotic period, even include anarchism(e.g The Culture Revolution). I guess it’s kind of confusing because the current Chinese government(Xi and his fellas) is pretending they are the ‘left’ wing, but keep acting like a right-wing, like urging nationalism and embarrassing the minorities, LGBTQ or some sub racial groups.
This is from xi xingping's first speech as president (2013), can anyone explain more closely?: We must not underestimate the self-regulating capacity of capitalist society, and fully account for the reality of the long-term economic, scientific, and military superiority of developed Western countries. We must prepare for both long-term cooperation and struggle between their social systems and ours, along all fronts. This primary stage process will last a long time. They are more developed in terms of productive forces, and so we must study and learn from the positive aspects of capitalists, and even tolerate comparisons of their advantages to our shortcomings. Our strategic determination must be strong, and we must resolutely resist all pressure to abandon socialism, and instead consciously correct miscinceptions throughout until we surpass this primary stage. By resolving our issues, growing our national power, and improving the lives of our people we will continue to demonstrate socialism’s superiority over capitalism, and this initiative will become an advantage and eventually a victory.

Clearly the boxes of capitalism or socialism are too small to capture all the nuances. China has been trying to be socialist by being capitalistic in economic sense for a while to get more prosperous and then taper down capitalism in favour of socialism. Socialists in the west will do a lot of mental gymnastics to avoid thinking about why China decided to be capitalistic. But capitalists in the west will also do a lot of mental gymnastic to avoid thinking about why they decided to stop the capitalist phase so early.
China is becoming more nationalist, not socialist. They are putting marxists in jail and censoring leftist speech. The so called 'socialist' reforms by Xi Jinping are simply and attempt to heighten chinses national identity.
because, above all, china is a single-party dictatorship based on the traditional chinese idea that china is the middle kingdom, destined to be great, but that was humiliated by "the west" for 200 years. This is China being China once again. a functionaly corrupt and burocratic empire based in a system of social values that we dont understand. It's quite hard to add a account in some metropolitan city, but just live in is ok, no more processes, just rent a house and live. I came from Baoding, a small city in Hebei, and now I am living in Shanghai. If you want to add a account in Shanghai, you need to graduate from some of the best undergraduate universities in Shanghai, or get a master's degree from a university in Shanghai. In addition, paying social security for a certain number of years can also add a account in Shanghai. Also, you may register as a resident then you can access to some public utilities. Adding an account in most of a medium sized city is quite easy. Such as Xi'an, a provincial capital of Shanxi, you just have a technical secondary school degree or have permanent residence, then you may be a local in that city.
This video takes an illicit turn, I would of liked if you would of zoned in on some of Xi’s more socialist policies like cracking down on banks, billionaires, and big tech companies. You could of also gone into his more interesting family policies and the fact that Chinese apps have timers on them to ensure citizens aren’t on their phone too long. You showed GDP growth, but didn’t do much else to show any real significant data of value to your video. Just felt like this video was void of hard data and filled more with opinions/narratives
Technology is a double-edged sword. The timer you mentioned is just a reminder. When artificial intelligence leaves you without privacy, capitalists can control everything about you through big data. Your child will play pointless games around the clock. You'll probably be jerking off to naked women all the time. People should learn restraint. If you can't, someone needs to remind you that freedom is relative freedom. You can't kill people and say it's your freedom. Then I said that the nuclear bomb will destroy the world, everyone is free, and the soul is free. Isn't this very selfish behavior?
You must be the son of a bank or a capitalist. Capitalists are ugly and greedy. Exploiting the surplus value of others has to whitewash oneself. The Chinese media has kneeled down and called Jack Ma (Jack Ma) Dad. If you don't clean him up, what is socialism?

yup he screwed it up and doesn't actually answer the question with examples. there's very little in this video that shows that china is becoming socialist again.
I could understand each segment of your video individually, but I couldn't really understand the entire video cohesively as a whole because each segment appeared disjointed from the rest. It might be due to the gaps in my background knowledge, but it would be helpful for people like me if you could summarize the key points at the end so that we can take away the real gist of the video instead of the fragmented sections. It would also be very helpful if you could list the resources and books that you used.
i think it's because he can't argue the main question very well, and instead goes over a list of fun facts which are interesting to hear but don't really add up to anything substantial. many of the weaker videos on this channel are like that. there are source dumps under the video but he doesn't link the sources with the claims so they are useless.
The hukou thing, that was supposed to bind the people to where they were born in the last few decades, has greatly changed in the last 10 years. People can freely move to China’s Beverly Hills and find a job that allow them settle down nearby. Their kids can compete in the same battle field as locally born kids in the event of Gaokao, the China’s SET.
As a Chinese, this video is simply not deep enough, when it comes to Socialism, Capitalism, etc. Yet indeed, this is the best era of China, and also the worst era as well.
Yeah, this is overall good political coverage, but you can definitely detect the bias here. Many Westerners see incremental infrastructural investment as a waste, when in reality, it's because they've zoomed-in too closely to see the context of long-term planning, same as the "Empty Ghost Cities", which now have millions living in them. I find it convenient that you have to pay to subscribe to his Nebula to hear why he thinks China hasn't reduced poverty.
i cringed when he said that. the whole point of a railway to connect stuff, not the nowheres inbetween the stations. also that desert has a decent amount of industrial and tourism activity, just because it doesn't have giant cities all over it like the rest of china doesn't mean nobody goes there.
21:49 “Why China won’t abandon Zero-Covid” It just did. All of my family were tested positive in about two weeks’ time span, and thankfully none of them died.
Qualifying China as authoritarian is kinda hollow. I mean, most states across the planet are authoritarian, no? As Wavehello suggested, given the multitude of interpretation the words mean little unless defined at the beginning. For instance, my understanding of a socialist state is such that capital is subordinate to the state, not the other way round. Unlike capitalist states, one can be extremely wealth and still held accountable for their crimes.
Absolutely not... No popular definition of socialism defers control to the state except the definition taught in the awful American education system. Socialism is an economic system in which workers own the means of production. That's the most concise possible definition. Most socialists are libertarian and have mistrust for the state apparatus. After all, if the state has a monopoly on power like China, then the workers don't really own the means of production do they? The state does. A state owned firm is definitionally not a worker owned firm.
@@mausklick1635 actually i think there's been a few of them this year. i believe the quality has gone down since he started to double dip with the nebula stuff. a bunch of his graphs and claims have been wrong too.
I don't care that they built a few roads and high speed rail lines that don't serve very populated areas. They did far, far more than America, where we have crumbling infrastructure, higher crime rates, no world-class high speed rail AT ALL, and everything is only ever done for the sake of profit rather than for the good of society. No matter how you spin it, China has seen incredible growth, especially in transportation and infrastructure.
I am in China and the past 30 years have been an economic miracle. My grandfather could not eat enough when he was a child (Mao period) and my parents could only eat potatoes when they were young. I was able to eat meat when I was in elementary school, but had no pocket money for snacks. Now I am 25 years old, my family has bought a 200-square-meter building (relying on the money my father earned as a construction worker), and the family has bought a car. My parents are junior high school graduates, and I am already a graduate student. If in the US, my family can't afford my tuition, I know there are student loans in the US, but colleges in China are almost free. When I graduate next year, I can get an offer from BYD with a salary of 2w USD (the purchasing power in China is about 6w USD, which is a company invested by Buffett). When I recall my childhood now, it seems like a century has passed, but in fact, only 15 years have passed. Facts speak louder than words. I believe in the Communist Party of China.
how does any of this relate to the video's content? the video is a discussion on the true political nature of china's political system not discussing whether the system is successful or not
@@haloway7462 Honestly if anything I think that it's shown any country can be crippled by a dictatorship in a matter of years. As soon as power is completely consolidated under one person it almost never goes well. It is easily the worst form of government and that much has been proven for thousands of years. The only advantage is decisive decision-making in war times, but even then that doesn't guarantee good decisions.
As a Chinese, I don't think communism, capitalism and dictatorship can lumped together. Whether China did communism before or capitalism now,It always be a country under the dictatorship of the CCP. It's pretty sad ):
@@emagician7102 Depending on the circumstances Communism can be more like an ogligarchy, or you could even call it an unelected republic. It's only when the leader concentrates power and can act with basically complete impunity that it's a dictatorship. As soon as you are in the position to purge all your rivals and eject other party members at will, that is when the dictatorship really forms. Before that, you still have to play a lot of games even if you are the most powerful player. I'd say the time between Mao and Xi marked a period of time where party power was less concentrated (in the hands of one person at least), and I think the outcomes for the country speak to as much. I'm not Chinese though, this is only what I understand from the history I've been told as an outsider.
It's interesting that a video can seems to be so professional and rigorous, and yet full of factual errors. I was born in Heilongjiang (that where my Hukou belongs to) and now working (as an engineer) and living in Shanghai. Not only I can use all the medical services here in Shanghai, 90% of the cost can also be covered by the National medical insurance. Not saying that everything is perfectly equal, you do have to work here for at least 6 years, before you are qualified to buy your own apartment. About 40% of the people now living in Shanghai don't have their Hukou in Shanghai. The previous generation does put the Hukou in a very important place. For young people, many of us wouldn't be bothered anymore.

The rising sun symbol on the Thumbnail is pretty disgusting by the way - Why don't you educate yourself on the "Rising Sun symbol" and its implications in East Asian and South Asian history? It's kind of like a Nazi swastika symbol.

So China seems Half-Socialist to me tbh right now anyway

Instead of being state-owned they're owned and controlled by the workers working in the enterprise in some way or another.
👍

Compare Lenin: "The progressive historical role of capitalism may be summed up in two brief propositions: increase in the productive forces of social labour, and the socialisation of that labour."
Marx himself acknowledged that this increase in productive forces was an essential step on the road to socialism. As long as China can be seen to keep one eye on the last few words of that quote, and - especially recently - I believe it can, then I will wish them all the best.
Sorry I’m not understanding the metaphor. Can someone explain?
Tbh so many CPC leaders always speak in poetic terms or riddles and I sometimes don’t understand their metaphors lMao. Like what does that even mean??? Feed the rocks?

It sounds dumb but, would them having more Kfc’s, McDonald’s, and etc make sense. Since their population compared to America is tripled if not more.
Not to mention GM and Volkswagen and Tesla are *VERY HUGE* over there.
Having fast food doesn’t matter as to what political system they have.
3
De-monetized! But still got a lot of advertisment.

So how surprising is it that they have more Macs and KFC's? If it isn't 4 times at much it wouldn't even be indicative of being more capitalist.
@@stylis666 most of those are dirt poor so it’s even more capitalist just by class divide itself
@@stylis666 Yeah that's what I thought when he said that about KFC. Not really surprising when it's over 3 times the population.

Find out why over $2B of US tax payer money is been allocated for full spectrum war with China.

I liken the Chinese as having run under the New Economic Program (NEP) of the early, post-Civil War USSR for 30 odd years.
It seems to me that few outside of China know what's going on... Can't believe people still ask how I access youtube or play the social credit meme. No one has properly addressed our grievances.
Just ignore them. They've been brainwashed. When they can't handle the truth, they just hide behind the social credit meme
What are the grievances?
I am actually very dissatisfied with the fact that Marxist socialism started in Europe, but you gave it up. I would rather be sucked by capitalists than fight for revolution. It's like boiling a frog in warm water. Slowly unable to breathe. I'm a Chinese, and I watched that Spanish TV show about robbing the bank and printing money to give to the poor. It seems to be popular all over the world. Why is this? Where there is oppression, there is resistance.
Of course not, most countries' international news only come from their neighboring nations plus the US and where they wage war lmai
I am not familiar with internal Chinese politics, can you explain what these grievances are?

Seeing how USSR is collapsing after political reform. some people in the US still solely believe that China is still a communist country...

“Is China socialist or capitalist is a non-Marxian question”简直可笑,如果这不是个意识形态问题,邓希贤难道会发明“猫论”和“市场手段论”吗?

One problem with the video is that when Chinese officials and propaganda talk about left and right, they generally mean conservatives/authoritarians on the left and liberals on the right. So when there’s talk in China about the country turning left it means more authoritarian, not necessarily more socialist. Its best using terms such as state-control vs laissez-faire than simply left vs right
When Deng referred to leftists and rightists, i think he was referring to within-party factions, and not broad political beliefs.
I guess that confusion just suits his narrative.
it's kind of just becoming more nationalistic.
This is from xi xingping's first speech as president (2013), can anyone explain more closely?:
We must not underestimate the self-regulating capacity of capitalist society, and fully account for the reality of the long-term economic, scientific, and military superiority of developed Western countries.

People can freely move to China’s Beverly Hills and find a job that allow them settle down nearby. Their kids can compete in the same battle field as locally born kids in the event of Gaokao, the China’s SET.
Polymatter continues to impress!
After watching the video I didn't understand how you saw that China is still socialist economically?
As a Chinese, this video is simply not deep enough, when it comes to Socialism, Capitalism, etc. Yet indeed, this is the best era of China, and also the worst era as well.
5:50 the picture showed isnt Mao, it's Zhu who passed away the very same year, who was to be believed the head of the military of China.
Meo on his death bed "don't give the country to Deng Xiaoping, he'll make it capitalist-y-er!"
Exactly... It is Capitalism at its core
Dope thumbnail dude
You call a strategic railway potentially connecting China and Central Asia "a railway from nowhere to nowhere"?
Yeah, this is overall good political coverage, but you can definitely detect the bias here. Many Westerners see incremental infrastructural investment as a waste, when in reality, it's because they've zoomed-in too closely to see the context of long-term planning, same as the "Empty Ghost Cities", which now have millions living in them. I find it convenient that you have to pay to subscribe to his Nebula to hear why he thinks China hasn't reduced poverty.
Western observers want to see their stereotypes confirmed
i cringed when he said that. the whole point of a railway to connect stuff, not the nowheres inbetween the stations. also that desert has a decent amount of industrial and tourism activity, just because it doesn't have giant cities all over it like the rest of china doesn't mean nobody goes there.
21:49 “Why China won’t abandon Zero-Covid” It just did.
All of my family were tested positive in about two weeks’ time span, and thankfully none of them died.
Things change so fast. One moment everybody was restricted on their movement strictly, and the next, we were all freed as if nothing had happened.
If I'm ever to subscribe to nebula it will be because of PolyMatter
PollyMatter is the budget version of SecondThoughts
I have never heard the double-facade take.. it is a curious one. Good video.
Would love to see an update. The entire economy has been turned upside down since the first of this year!
This must be the first video you've made that I feel you haven't answered the question in the title.
Watching this video, I feel like he says almost nothing for 20 minutes...
Its actually the second. That previdous video also had nothing to do with its title.
@@mausklick1635 actually i think there's been a few of them this year. i believe the quality has gone down since he started to double dip with the nebula stuff. a bunch of his graphs and claims have been wrong too.
3:10 I believe you mean “we’re lovin it”
Honey! PolyMatter uploaded a video!
Honey! Wheres my super suit?
1:20 There are anime made to advertise McDonalds in China. Yes, Japanese cartoons made to sell an American product in China. What a time to be alive.
Chinese does produces cartoon like anime , so does Korean
I believe in the Communist Party of China.
how does any of this relate to the video's content? the video is a discussion on the true political nature of china's political system not discussing whether the system is successful or not
China has transitioned from communism to capitalism to dictatorship.
right
I guess they found out a system of government could not be fixed but dynamic with the needs of the society
You continue to impress.
Would love to see a video on how Xi came to power
Thank you for your content
Socialist can never be achieved by a developing country, when u do it hard,it will cause lot of problems like what roc have experienced
problem is people will become greedy and they tend to be monopoly
