There is one basic thing that you left out. I have been an IT consultant for 25 years, and I recently took an old Smart UPS 1500 out of my closet. Frankly, I did not remember whether it worked, or not, when I stored it. It would not turn on at all, and I went through all your steps (most, of which I knew). Well, I took one last step: I had a second, working, Smart UPS 1500, and I swapped the battery, and sure enough, it worked. It was not dead, just the battery was totally done.
A totally dead battery is also enough to cause this issue.

Anyway around this? I have 2 1500 RMs that I put in storage but want to use. Neither will power on. I dont want to buy new batteries just to find out theyre broken

Thank you for this! My DC disconnect popped out or was loose (it looked like it was still plugged in) and connecting it again fixed it!

Good morning, I replaced the batteries in a APC SMT 3000 XLA UPS system. However, the battery date will not change, I set it but it reverts back to previous set date. What can I do to correct this issue?

Hi Jon, My issue is a little different.
I recently purchased a good used APC C 1500 UPS and it sat for maybe two months before I got to use it. It has the LCD display.
After installing it, I connected power supply lead to main power then plugged one load cable to surveillance unit. I wanted UPS to my CCTV system in case of a black out.
After pressing the power on button on UPS, the battery charge indicates very low battery due to it having sat around for a while, the batteries have discharged.
What happens after a short time, after having line voltage, the UPS will drop the output voltage then switch off.
Why would it turn off if it's connected to mains power. It should be charging the batteries AND be able to provide output to power external device right ?
The Battery back up is only there in case of a power outage, but there is no outage as such as it's connected to mains power.
Would a bad battery pack be messing with the electronics and is shutting the whole unit as a form of protection ?
I hope you can share some knowledge here please.
    Thank you.

You didn't mention the fuse between the batteries. That could kill the DC side too. What is the amperage of the fuse on this model?

The last time my ups was working, it was fully charged, and I've tried everything here and still nothing. I fully reconnected the battery. I was moving my ups, so I took out the battery disconnect and when I put it back in it seemed intermittent, so I pulled it out and put it back in got a big spark and it never came back on. What happened?

      hehe.. big spark huh
Probably Blown a Capacitor or 2
Now. Unless you have electrical training, you SHOULD NOT attempt to replace them yourself
      but to answer your question
      it's Most likely Blown components
if it did work, and now it's not working
it means IN THE CIRCUIT BOARD there is a point at which the Electricity stops flowing because a part is damaged,
this will usually occur because of an Over current situation
in which case usually Fuses are what blow or Capacitors,
beyond that you generally find Resistors and diodes are faulty
and just because a Capacitor is not blown does not mean it is not faulty
Most techs think that the way to check a capacitor is to get out a Multimeter and go to Capacitance setting.
THIS IS NOT CORRECT (this is one small way, but not very reliable way to check)
and ESR tester is required if one wants to check if a capacitor is good or bad. RELIABLY.
I say get an electrician to look at it
      or
ask the company how much they charge for a new unit
or how much for a new Mainboard to be replaced
You'll probably find that THE COMPANY that manufacturs it will make the cost of replacing the board more expensive than the Unit itself
an electrician could (Depending on the issue) have a replacement cost of $1 - $50 (more realistically,.... approx $10)
he would also want to charge for labour and time, so let's say $100 per hour for that, and you might be looking at $150 - $200 to get it fixed vs the cost of a new unit
Unless you have a friend how is an electrician or Engineer in which case you'll fix it for under $50
      hope that helps

I have a Dell Tower UPS 1000W External Battery Module, but it does not turn on, if the batteries are dead, it does not turn on, or even if the battery is dead it turns on

  • @bravebabar
    @bravebabar 7 років тому

Will it turn on if batteries are completely dead?

    • @martinkuliza
      @martinkuliza 7 років тому +2

      Babar Khalid
depends on the UPS, but it should turn on
Fundamentally Uninterruptable Power Supplies work like this
      (Over simplified explanation).......
there are 2 sides to it
the side that takes in Power from your wall
the side that stores the power in case a black out happens
so... While you have power coming in from the side that takes it from the wall point (simply stated) 2 things happen.
      1. it supplies your devices / servers / computers /whatever with power
      2. it fills up the batteries (Charges them, if you will)
Point being (As you know) when a power outtage happens, there is a RELAY (Switch) inside that detects no current of Voltage coming in and it switches to BATTERY POWER
When Voltage and Current is detected again.... IT SWITCHES BACK and refills the part that was used in the battery.
so.... IF YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERIES or IF THEY ARE DEAD
all that SHOULD happen is this
it should work as normal, EXCEPT
if you have a power outtage it won't keep your devices on (Because the batteries are not charged)
      so your answer is...
YES , it should still switch on
      but without the batteries working
THE UPS IS JUST A GLORIFIED POWER POINT or POWER BOARD
      Hope that helps

"SC, SU, and SUA Smart-UPS require a functional battery be connected in order to turn on. If the battery is disconnected, or failed and completely drained, the UPS will not turn on. SMX and SMT series Smart-UPS do not have this limitation." from APC website

If nothing of that sort works, can the circuits or something inside of the UPS be dead or just as simple as dead batteries? It is 12v batteries, right?
