  • There is concern mounting Saturday after a Chinese warship was caught on Global News exclusive video coming within nearly 150 yards of the USS Chung-Hoon, a U.S. destroyer that was conducting a joint mission with Canada in the Taiwan Strait.
A People’s Liberation Navy ship picked up considerable speed and cut in front of the bow of the Chung-Hoon, a maneuver HMCS Montreal’s commander, Capt. Paul Mountford, called “not professional.”
Mackenzie Gray, who is aboard the HMCS Montreal, witnessed first-hand the latest aggressive military move by Beijing and what we know so far.

The US ships should stay out of the Taiwan Strait for the near future. Being there during these high tension times with China is just instigating aggression. I realize it's technically International waters, but some sensible discretion should be used at this time. I know we'd be freaking out if Chinese warships were this close to the California coast.

Sir, I don't know what kind of a Crack you re smoking but that definition is for an EEZ not international water. Any nation's territorial water extends up to just 12 nautical mile from the "land" (low tide). Anything outside = international water where any vessel can navigate as they wish to.

They won't because they know that if they sail near Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of California, or off New York City that exactly nothing will happen if they remain more that 12 miles off shore, thus the exercise would just be a big embarrassment. They would be monitored but not harassed by the US military. Russians/USSR have done this for decades.

It has been ruled repeatedly to be thus by the UN over the years and China ignores it ... and the territorial waters of about 8 other countries, as well. Basically, they've declared the entire South China Sea to be Chinese property in spite of it being shared by Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, Thailand.
