During Fiona Apple’s interview with Vulture, she explains the meaning of each song in this album.
I lost my breath upon realizing this song resonated with myself and others who were understood, given a voice and defended through this song.
As well as building the strength and bravery to escape the memory and events which were swallowed and shoved as far down as possible. It’s OK to begin to vomit it up, heal and not fear speaking your truth.
“It’s one of those situations where she didn’t consider it rape because of the relationship she had with this person. On top of that, this person was so fucked up that they didn’t know who she was. And so she assumed they didn’t know they had done this to her. She spent years protecting him from the knowledge of that, and in so doing, really hurt herself. She was like, “Did it really happen?” And I was like, “That sounds like it really fucking happened. What you’re describing. Yeah, that’s rape.”
That song was a very difficult one to do, because you don’t want to be too literal, but you also want to put some things in there for this woman so the guy knows she knows. Even though it’s an awkward thing to say in a song - “You raped me” - some people need to say it out loud in order to understand that’s what happened to them. And my hope is that maybe some women and men will be able to sing along with that line and allow it to tell the truth for them. Because sometimes it’s just really hard to say, especially if you don’t want to hurt the person who did it to you. It’s hard to say something that harsh about it. So even though I felt like, Wow, it’s just a clunky thing to put in the middle of a song, I also feel it’ll be important to the people it matters to.”

She’s totally right about needing to say It out loud. Singing that bridge along with her helps take away the power in the word, too. I wish I could thank her myself for helping my healing process.

My 14 year old daughter recommended this album. I had heard of her but did not venture. She has 3 vinyls. One day I told her show me what is so good about her? Now I can appreciate her music, this album is a master piece. So glad I gave her a chance, she is iconic. Thanks Emy for showing me her music.

That... bridge. FUCKING... HELL. First time I heard it, I went from “the subject seems rather dark, but I’m loving the somewhat upbeat, perky instrumental.” to my jaw dropped for a whole minute in sheer, utter shock and unsettlement. Such a beautiful, haunting, twisted last minute on such a good, bloody track. The decade’s just started and this is album’s already up there as one of the best, I now fully understand the praise this wild batch of songs is getting, this is amazing. This is my first Fiona Apple album, and from the looks of it, I don’t think it’ll be the last I’ll listen to.

    Was she lost? Or
Maybe she was not for travelling in the stock car, anymore
Maybe she spent her formative years
    Dealing with his contentious fears
And endless jeers and her endless tears
Or maybe she's got tired of watching him
Sniff white off a starlet's breast
Treating his wife like less than a guest
Getting his girl to clean up his mess
Never showing weakness unless it's award's season
It's the season of the ward

    Well, good morning, good morning
You raped me in the same bed your daughter was born in

(Like you know, you should know, but you don't know

Been a fan/admirer of your work since you debuted. Words cannot express how happy I am for you on the release of your latest body of work. I know that the process to get to any release is anxiety ridden and full of despair to an extent - but i just wanted to say 'thank you' and congratulations. You deserve every bit of the praise you're receiving today, even if it has been making you anxious or balled up into a corner of your house, trying to hide away xD. Watching you grow musically has been inspiring and I love the way you think and word things. You are a true artist who lives in reality and writes and sings about real emotions and has always inspired me. No matter how tense or stressful life gets, your music has always been there to help me unravel and discover strength in me I didn't know existed. You speak and see things in ways that i dont think many people understand, and it sets you apart. Thank you again for everything and please don't ever stop making music. I also want to say that its a total dream of mine to sit down and smoke a joint with you over a cup of tea and talk about life. That would be the coolest thing ever.

"sauced up bat" sounds like sociopath
i think it makes sense not to use the exact word for a song about a woman that is beginning to undestand her abuse

My brain for some reason explains the sauced up bat line as 'ready to fuck me over any time and you wont care if it hurts me' (so yes, but not limited to sociopaths, I guess.) and then I just kinda want to throw up for a bit because I do not believe the bat in this case to not be a horrifying sexual metaphor, concerning the topic of the song.. (the cool contrast on the album in regards to bats being potentially hurtful objects, is how in Ladies -ladies ladies ladies..- she sings about the fruit bat in reference to her own love for self. I just love that. Whenever I notice shit like this my mind boggles in awe of her creativity..

    • @kiek

Which is not to say that she doesnt, in parallel (and very often) uses (near)homophones as a poetic strategy, I think..
Am I your gal or/gallow, - The rib is the shell and the heart is a yolk/yoke - just to be crash cymbals/symbols - on and on and on.). I hadn't noticed the sociopath one yet so thanks for mentioning it 🙏

I’m kinda paralyzed by the lyrics for this particular song. This woman always was a genius but she seems to invent and kinda shift the gradation of term GENIUS far forward with each new record. I’m totally disarmed. Hands down the messiah of modern music. It’s her or no one who could possibly safe nowadays music industry from stupidity and talentless efforts. Brava Fiona👏🏼🙌🏼♥️

As long as people are still listening to this on the future and THEY WILL. I promise you that. It will still matter, and I can guarantee you this album will age like a fine wine and get better with time, and not only that but this album will be revered even more in the future than it is now and I mean that 100% It just won album of the year at the Grammys which is impressive considering it was recorded in her home and not some fuckin million dollar studio. That does a lot for music. It proves you don't need tons of money and fancy gear and exhale dive producers who "know it all" when most just have a greater understanding of how to use gear and a few great bands under their belt on their resumes when in actuality ANYONE could have produced classic albums and a million times out of a million and one would still be hit, popular, classic albums regardless of who recorded and produced them. This shows you can literally record something yourself in your bedroom and make an incredible album with no ones help because she just did it and won a damn GRAMMY for best album of the year. Know why? Because at the end of the day it's not the $5,000 guitar and drum set, the fancy microphones, the perfect room for capturing drum sounds, nor ANY asshole big shot suit and tie A&R guys, the famous producer or any of that to make an excellent album that moves people and wins awards. You know what it really takes? One thing and one thing only. A human being giving it their all and making music with conviction, passion and real emotion captured and recorded AS IS. No auto tune, no quantization, no fancy tricks and new age gear. Just some instruments, (or lack there of) a determined person or people together in a room and any means necessary to capture said music. It's a glorious thing and the is album would be just as amazing without any attention from the Grammys or any other accolades because it moves people. I can almost guarantee when she told the label, the managers, the producers, the A&R or label big wigs what and how she did this they all probably either laughed, said no, hated the idea, told her it was stupid, or a combination of any or all of those. But guess what?! They were all wrong. She did it and you can to and that's the most powerful thing about this record. It's empowering to women, it's honest, it's empowering to humans period, and it's not hiding behind anything or trying to be something that it is not. It's beautiful and it will be looked at as a classic and held in even higher regard when looked upon in many, many years from now as a very import Ian and poignant album created in a time of a global pandemic that perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being cooped up, the feeling of missing "normal life" and missing your loved ones and friends alike. It's beautiful and I'm glad I'm alive to experience such a fantastic work of art and musical genius that pushed the boundaries of what can be done with music and bends the themes and rules that have been constructed and restrictive to exactly HOW music should be made and captured.
      10/10
      Highly, highly recommend.

I think this song is way too intense as a final track. The whole album is so charged with emotion that it needs a resolution track. And that is what on I go is. This is my favorite song of the album but it would leave a weird taste in my mouth if it was the las track.
