This song is terrifying in its ferocity.
It never lets up, it's just viscerally intense.
snot just flew out my nose with laughter
@@colnago8376also terrifying.
This is not simply a song, but a spell.
"I wonder what lies he's told you about me
To make sure that we'll never be friends"
Too real
"I'm alone on the summit now trying not to let my light go out."
Same girl, same.
same, girl, same 💜
I'm in my 60s and this is the most exhilarating, visceral music I have ever heard.
Monko Man There’s always a guy that comes and says he’s in his 60s and even he likes it, no matter the song.
Merzbow, Prurient, Pharmakon, Death Grips and plenty of others might like to have a word with you
By the way, previous to this it was Led Zeppelin - In my time of dying.
@@GraditudevsRevenge I went through a good few Death Grips tunes. For me they're trying to sound visceral, but it doesn't come from within. Sure you'll disagree, but to me it was boring.
keep on rockin fiona til u die bro. check out some shoegaze too man.
I wish I had an ounce of the passion Fiona has thrown into this song alone. This whole album has made me feel things again.
God, SAME
time to get off the pills
The slight tempo acceleration at 3:16 makes this even more claustrophobic and ominous
Time alterations:
0:00 137bpm
2:14 138bpm
2:36 139bpm
3:01 140bpm
But I'm not sure. There's a lot of time fluctuations and maybe this was recorded without metronome.
This has such a ferocious intensity it's kind of sonically disarming but you must listen repeatedly and it gets more and more enjoyable. The intensity increases as her voice does toward the latter part of the song
That's exactly what I love about it. Her vocal intensity matches perfectly with the sonic dissonance. It's supposed to be unsettling given the subject matter.
lol
i may have listened to it a hundred times this weekend
This song is cathartic just so fucking good
i haven't seen anyone mention this yet so...
i'm just here to say that i feel pretty sure that when she says “you’re wearing time like a flowery crown/sittin there sittin that big cat down” she’s describing the image on the “strength” tarot card: a woman, wearing a crown of flowers, who calmly stands or sometimes sits beside a ferocious lion, whom with her graceful tender strength, she has tamed. in tarot tradition this card means courage, survival; inner strength and fortitude in times of danger and distress. it can also mean compassion and patience for others at your own expense. in the context of this song, it’s a chillingly powerful image. it’s haunting, really; one of her finest lyrics.
and...it’s possible that the follow up lines, “i’m alone on the summit now/trying not to let my light go out” describe the hermit card, on which a cloaked figure stands alone atop a mountain or on a precipice, holding a lantern; this card means solitude, spiritual truth, personal growth and hard-won knowledge; seeking the answers you can find only by swimming deep where no one can follow.
strength is the 8th card in the tarot, and the hermit is the 9th.
genuinely thank you so much this is my favorite song but i had NO IDEA what this part meant
This is so cool! Thank you for this new information :)
It may all be pure coincidence, but fascinating nonetheless.
Very interesting! And, the hermit represents Virgo in tarot. Fiona is a Virgo. 🙂 ♍
Wow smh
I'm 66 years old and I first heard Fiona Apple when my daughter played it. I have loved her music ever since and I am so glad she released this new music which is utterly fantastic

Funny how many metal and “hard” rock fans and musicians are feeling this album.
That´s because she´s the real deal.
i think this is one of those rare records that works for everyone regardless of genre
rhythm, groove
Really misguided statement. My and others interest in bands like Tool, RATM or The Melvins is equal to my interest in Fiona Apple, Bjork or Lorde. Break out that tribal mentality. All Music Matters.
focalized There are many people who are dismissive towards anything that doesn’t align with their genre leanings or what they’d typically listen to. I think some metal-heads and hard rock lovers enjoy how raw and emotional Fiona’s vocals are, the frequently dark vibe the album has, and how the album plays up discordant and unsettling instrumentation. But if you’re a legit fan of all types of music, I don’t get not liking this or at least appreciating it.
It's a rare musical event when an album gone straight to the top shelf. This is one.

Heavy Balloon was the first song to really hook me and I thought it was my favorite on the first few listens, but this one... this is the one. I swear it seems like Fiona writes straight from my heart. No other artist can do that. She's such a gift.
Heavy Balloon is good and is one of the “easiest” songs on the album. But the way this one builds as it goes along and sinks into you- it’s almost scary.
was a gift 20 years ago...now shes a bitter old hagg
This song is absolutely harrowing in the most powerful way.
i got diarrhea
This, Ladies, Heavy Balloon is the strongest stretch of songs I've ever heard on an album! I mean WOW!!!
To me it's up there with Exit Music, Let Down and Karma Police off OK Computer.
Half a year later, this is still one of the most viscerally powerful things I've heard in a long time.
Her authenticity is incredible.
yeah... nobody puts out this kind of bullshit
"you're wearing time like a flowery crown / sitting there, sitting that big cat down!"
i've listened to the album a lot of times already but this part always gives me goosebumps
Reminds me of the final scene in Midsommar
Especially later in the song in the higher register. She knows how to use that rasp like nobody's business, damn.
@@brittanyrobertsUFomg yes!
Favorite song on the album. It’s just gut-wrenching.

This is exactly how wild I wanted her to get on this album.
3 years and this song is aging so well.
This woman has so much passion and has gone through some hard knocks obviously, I love that she shares it through her amazing music!
SHE’S BACK BABYYYYYY
no... not really, she done
Best song of her new record. Period.
Yup
she really did THAT
I'm just now getting to the rest of the record, becasue once i hit this, i kept hitting repeat.

This, cosmonaut, title track, rack of his, under the table
Can't believe I'm alive in my prime during a global health pandemic and in the midst of a true masterpiece album that will probably talked about in universities.
Yeah 100%. Me and my friends were just talking about it in the cafe at our Uni.
Masterpiece. Her best album to date.
Let’s hope she gives us at least one or two more.
Been a metal head most of my life ... been in love with Fiona Apple since 97
GAY
Fan of Juno?
Junip? Sorry
Fiona has that effect. The first time I heard of her was reading an interview with the Clown one from Slipknot in the late 90's. He was asked who his favourite current artist was and he answered 'Fiona Apple'. Given this was their 'we are so crazy we shit on the stage' period, I was surprised.
it is a pure wonder, that such a song was written and recorded "today", it's like an essence of the very best songs ever. Must've been a combination of time and dimension travel. Love it.
Thank you, Fiona, for existing.

So this song literally happened to me and now that woman is my girlfriend. It weirds me out that Fiona captured the exact situation.
There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer. -- Ansel Adams 8)
Fiona just has a way of resonating with the listener to an astonishing degree
That makes two of us.
I’m alone on the summit now
Trying not to let my light go out
I wonder what lies he’s telling her about me
To make sure his sister and I
Will never be friends 😔
We didn’t get a witness
We’re the only ones who know
My ex tried cheating on his new gf with me, I told her, were friends now.
Wait what? Lol, this song is about a woman feeling close/connected to her abuser's newest woman...
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I too used to want him to be proud of me
And then I just wanted him to make amends
I wonder what lies he’s telling you about me
To make sure that we’ll never be friends
[Chorus]
And it's a shame because you and I didn’t get a witness
We’re the only ones who know!
We were cursed the moment that he kissed us
From then on, it was his big show
[Post-Chorus]
I grow concern when I saw him start to covet you
When I learnt what he did, I felt close to you
In my own way, I fell in love with you
But he's made me a ghost to you
[Verse 2]
I watch him let go of your hand, I want to stand between you
But it's not what I'm supposed to do
I watch him walk over, talk over you, be mean to you
And it makes me feel close to you
[Verse 3]
It makes me feel close to you
It makes me feel close to you
It's not what its supposed to do
It makes me feel close to you
[Verse 1]

And then I just wanted him to make amends

She's back! This is so good!!
Love this. Sounds like she’s singing over a Tom Waits “Mule Variations” song
I thought of Waits too. "Real Gone" and stuff.
I thought of Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica too.
Totally feeling the Tom Waits with a dash of early Sinead.
yes, sort of...Waits´album sounds way less self conscious than this, though, more organic, less contrived...sounds like old Kate Bush, too, but without the rattling chain samples and throbbing drum...it is sort of like FA got tangled up in all that time between albums, she got all caught up in thought vines....I will have to keep listening

THIS is a sad, very sad song.
Can ya explain it?
@@aakashsky3790 I might say this song is about a hard and rough time at school, something Fiona was capable of withstanding just because a girl (I remind she saying she was unsure if Shameika was real or an invention of her mind) told her she had potential and talent for stuff outside of traditional school.
@@FernandoMartinez-om2nj i really don't see anything in this particular song about her time at school. there are that on other songs in the album like that, but not this song. this is more about being in a relationship with a toxic man, and the feelings you get after breaking up wondering if you could have been friends with his new girlfriend if he had not been a barrier in between. these men will try to pin his current and past girlfriends against each other, when really he is the one at fault. also this feeling of feeling close to one of the few other people in the world that know what it's like to experience the exact abuse your ex did to you.

Regina Spektor vibes are strong in this album, especially this song
This isn’t reminiscent of anything is Regina’s catalog. Regina has never taken advantage of industrial-type production. Her music has never been drum and percussion (beyond piano) driven. Nor is this similar to anything from Regina lyrically or vocally. Sometimes it feels like people think every moody, “quirky” white female musician sounds the same.
@@liteflightify this just reminds me of Regina's ANGRIER songs . Not all of her songs are just piano. Pavlov's daughter and the singing reminds me of Regina's aggressive vocals in apres moi. Not saying they're the same. Just saying i get those vibes. It's a compliment

this song has GOT to be about Paul Thomas Anderson and the girl she's talking to HAS to be Maya. because in my dream Fiona and Maya WOULD be friends. they're so unique and talented in their own ways!
