very cool demo! I the hetfields sounds very powerful and mighty, the bone breakers more spicy in my opinion. I picked the J.H signature in my ESP LTD signgle cut, sounds amazing and just ordered the bone breaker in another single cut :D once you stardet a serious guitar collection, the tendency is to push it (mostly) very very far ^^ again, thanks for the great demo man !!!
The Bone Breakers take it fir me, they seem bigger. Probably an unpopular opinion but I always preferred Kirk's live sound over James, you definitely know he's a Bay Area boy.
Kirk said in his videos that he was experimenting with lower-gain (on the amp-side... this is important) channels. Seems like he accomplished a pickup for that by boosting the mids systematically. I hear what sounds like 2 or 3k being pushed, as well as something in the lower mids that reminds me of Steve Vai’s DiMarzio’s. EMG knows that a loud pickup doesn’t drive an amp the same as a punchy pickup, and it seems like Kirk asked for some “Super-81’s” rather than Hetfield’s more overwound-PAF-like pickups. But I guess I’ll see when I watch the comparison with the 81.
This video definitely helped my decision on getting the bone breaker. I have 2 eclipses. One already has the het set. The other is getting the bone breaker set.

Best sounding demo i think i ever heard, that tone!!! About to put a het set in my Jeff Loomis kelly, im not a fan of the blackouts. Now if i can just dial in my badlander to sound like your rig.
I have both of them combined with a 5150 combo and even both are great sets, I prefer the hetset which is thicker provides more mids.. The bone breakers are more metal oriented but with a lack of punchy mids...
I mean I still prefer the Het set since I think it has a nice rhythm tone, but definitely both work just as well as the other when it comes to lead or rhythm. Both are super chunky when you palm mute and have a good chug going, but I do admit the Bone Breakers are more versatile when you are switching between leads and rhythms. Idk what everyone else thinks but that’s just what I’m gettin from these samples. (I do like HET’s cleans better, makes sense since they were designed to have passive sounding cleans with good active distortion)
Awesome comparison! I like the Bonebreakers for rhythm more and the Het Set more for lead 😅 And your solos including the perfect wah usage are fucking awesome!
this comparison just show how "in tone" metallica really is, james is a heavy riffer so he needs to have pickups with a warm and envolving sound, while kirk is a lead shredder, he needs more bright and punchy sound. if you like to riff het set, if you like to shred bone breakers; that simple
Ok, I have both sets now, and I must say I enjoy the KHBB’s more than the Het set, so now I’m actually looking to sell the Het set and go with the 81/81 combo or the 81X/81X combo, haven’t decided yet, but I do love the old school Metal sound I get from the KHBB’s and the 81’s, that’s probably what’s started to turn me away from the Het set, I think they might be to aggressive or have to much bite in my opinion, but that just could be my ears playing tricks on me. I also can’t seem to get them dialed in like the other sets, I have no problem with...!
Cool vid. I think I may try a set of those bone breaker pickups. Although the het set are still my favourite pickup that I have so far. Keep up the good work. 🇨🇦

I'm planning on buying an ESP LTD KH White Zombie guitar and it seems older models come with two EMG 81's and newer models have Bone Breakers...since I'd buy it online its a gamble...hope to get one of the newer versions.
I thought about getting the White Zombie, but it’s a bolt on. Floyd Original and Bone Breakers. I have a KH602 with 81/60 combo in it and a spare set of Bone Breakers but just haven’t made the switch yet. The 81/60 in the KH602 I have has got to be magic hahaha Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar You have the KH 602? That guitar must be a joy to play! I think the KH WZ should have been a neck through guitar too. I've seen some recent videos of Kirk saying he'll be comming up with some new monster guitars and If they make that blueish/orange dracula guitar that he's been playing a lot latelly I'd go for that beauty. Cheers man.
Yeah it’s Fantastic! I was going to buy a White Zombie but played it in store and could not get used to the bolt on. The KH has the most comfortable neck and the bolt on just feels off. I was also looking into getting the Ouija Sparkle... but a new Camera and ENGL Invader 150 kind of put that on hold. It would be nice if they released his Joker Guitar with a set neck. TAKE MY MONEY!!! Cheers -Ryan
God damn, i love both, but will be going with the hets as they produce a better clean, and the bone breakers have only one color lol. Soon as I get my project ltd V though, most definitely putting some bone breakers.
I think the comparison is not quite fare as the guitars are not the same. Also why do you only compare bridge pickups not the neck? Anyway, I have EMG JH on one guitar, 81/60 on another and 57/66 on another, now only because Metallica have been my favourites I’m thinking on getting EMG BB and replacing the 81/60 or keeping them all and mixing them but have not made my mind yet. I have tried blind tests and to be honest not always guessed them. They all sound similar as they are all EMG after all.. However I tend to like mostly 57/66 and JH.
I can kind of see that... but at the same time I don't do UA-cam as a Full Time Job. I work about 60-70 hours a week and have a family. So swapping out pickups in the same guitar is a little more work than I want to put in for a very simple comparison. With High Gain you wouldn't really hear a difference between the 2 guitars. I can see if the guitars used were a Les Paul and a thin Flying V. I thought I did a quick Neck Comparison for one of the solos. The Het Set's Neck doesn't play well with Wahs. Also I thought I did a Clean Comparison with Bridge and Neck. Cheers -Ryan
I thought you were a professional musician, very good quality and great playing I have to admit (I’m too far still learning :)) The first time I watched it I did not see where you used the neck pickups. I agree Metallica mainly play with distortion however I think it is easier to hear the difference between the pickups on pure clean channel..
The Bone Breakers are based off of the 81/60 but are voiced differently. I generally prefer them to the Het Set. A little more bite. But I’d take a passive pickup any day of the week over actives at this point. Cheers -Ryan
I have the Hammett Bone Breaker’s in a JS22DKA, will be getting the Het-set in the future to put in a LTD EC256, which is also a future project!
"And justice for all..." album vibe in your playing, bone crushing sound!🤟
Thanks... it is my favourite album, after all! Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar mine too!🤟😉
I'm loving the little girl in the background. FFS Dad, will you pay attention to me! 😆
The Hammett set definitely has that cleaner sound, like Kirk states in his review of them, but man they do SHRED, just as well as the Het-set!!!
Both sets sound great but the bone breaker is definitely thicker, I would prefer them!

You just can't beat the Mesa/EMG setup. It's such an iconic sound.
Quite surprised at how much clearer the Kirk pickups are!
So helpful, thank you for the good job there, your channel is great!

Never thought I'd prefer Kirk's pups! Almost want Het Neck Pup and Kirk bridge

Awesome, I have the emg bone breaker in my gibson flying v and the 81\85 in my kh-602. I do have the het set and the 60 for spare.
I want guitar with 4 pick ups ! :)
Doubleneck? :-D

Need to compare EMG JH Het Set vs Seymour Duncan Livewire
I would love to see that too but I have to say the het set is better because.... its 30 bucks cheaper and I'm broke😂😂😂
Het set I’m putting in my Jim root strat I’m buys this week.
kid in the background "fucksake dad" 😂
nice review man, i like also the Bone breaker :)
it has more bit and live mids than JH set
Have them both, love them both
I have the same Kelly. I have JBs in it .it has a definite rounder sound with the passive pick-ups.
I removed the Hetset from one of my guitars and prefer the 81/60 for the James sound. Kirk on the other hand I prefer the bonebrakers.
Nice demo. But I'd run the default 81/60 set
I came here for the pickups, but now all I really want are the tabs for that mean riffage bro 🤙
Honestly I use the herder for high bass riffs, and I would use bone breakers for more thrashy shit

Dude just read your comment sorry so late I got an 81 in the neck and an 81x in the bridge of my 2009 Dean splittail .......it's a monster
Would definitely rather have some BBs after watching this video, thanks!

well... one thing is for sure. They both sound like EMG's!

Bone breakers are just the old with green emg. Maybe ?
