I'm a newbie grad, but I would recommend that everyone not only brings a physical portfolio with you to an interview, but also a process book for your BEST project. You'll walk through your portfolio, going over the intentions of each project etc. Then after that, you ask if they would like to see the full process of one of your projects. I think this catches some interviewers off guard and shows that you're really prepared. Process is everything when it comes to design. GOOD LUCK DESIGNERS, WE GOT THIS!! :)
i cannot tell you how helpful this video is, ive just been sitting here at 3am at my gym job weighing the pros and cons of bashing my head in and calling it quits on this whole mess since i just couldn't see a way into the graphic design industry without putting myself deeper into debt and becoming a bigger burden for my friends in family. your video is the first of many ive sat though that didn't encourage me to "be brave" and "don't ever stop learning", you gave me an outline, and an idea of what else i need to look into to get closer to my goal. i feel like with your advice i could probably get a job by this december at the earliest. thank you so much for making this video
I’ve had about 10 interviews this year but the feedback is always lack of experience but nothing negative. Tricky situation I’m just focusing on freelance projects and personal projects till I can land something. Thanks for the video really helpful btw
Hey Edmundo sorry to hear about your situation hopefully you have landed in a job by now. I will say the design industry is both a saturated and niche market rolled into one and unfortunately the experience side does come into play for an employer as they do need you to be able on the job it's unfair, but it is there requirement. I will be honest I employ other freelancers to do artwork roles for me but only those I trust and know from my perspective I do not want to hold the hands of a graduate or junior designer I need then to own the project like its there's I don't like micromanagement or its practice, and I wish it on no one to be micromanaged by another, I expect juniors to run it was expected for me to be able to own every job I do and I did and that philosophy is something I adhere too, crap I know but in my own experience when I was a student was the majority of students just messed around don't think about what they are doing and find those little creative gems are rare, simple things like communication they don't do this and if they do they don't do follow ups just being pro active is not something they do, I am not saying you are this type of person its just going on experience and one of the millions of factors they I don't or others don't employee grads or juniors unelss they got expeience. That being said try every avenue of getting a job as someone told me everyone needs a designer, look at companies of all sorts and not just agencies, consider relocation as an option. I once considered relocating to London but decided not to base on I felt it wasn't for me,. So I decided to work in around my home city, and I used to commute every day to a job in Cambridge. Also be more proactive if something is not working find out why and see if there's a solution around it. Don't give up being a designer I hope this helps you further, but more importantly, I hope you have settled into a design role by now
I had an internship a few months ago - they said they hired me off of just knowing id fit into the studio & had potential. I got my first real job yesterday somewhere new & im over the moon. Try call up places instead of emailing, it says alot about you. Good luck!
@@1998-c3q woah, this was a really long time ago I left this comment! My first internship was in my first year of studying, i did full time internships during my summer breaks and then got a part-time design job role along side my studies in second year, to later take a full-time position back at where I originally had my Internship in my third year of study. I graduated last year and I'm now working for my dream company, with huge clients. I wish you the best of luck, just keep pushing for it :)
Great video and advice Charli, I think that’s spot on! One thing I’ve seen be really useful too is creating a mini-project even based on the company you’re applying at. Can talk about what you’d redesign, the process, and why you made the choices you did. I haven’t done this specifically for design, but have for other roles and it played a part in getting a job once!
Thank you SO much for this video. I have finally realized this is my passion and the direction my life is leading me, but it's definitely a huge leap after so many years in a different field. I feel so encouraged by this, and I so appreciate you. You first inspired me about a year ago with your video on how to make screens and put custom designs on t-shirts, and you continue to now as I reach for this new goal. THANK YOU! 🥰
How can I get experience if I can't get experience?....this *seriously* needs to be addressed its so not funny everyone needs and deserves a chance, even if something like a government initiated scheme needs to be put in place to have Agencies give you a mandatory 1-3 months or even a few weeks. The Design College I went to didn't even have a work experience program it was a joke. Even Designers down the road who never get a break deserve help.
I feel you! :( I am a graduate and nobody gave me a chance to work. I am really not lazy, just a little insecure, but I want to work on myself. My university is pretty bad, and most stuff I learne by myself
I'm considering getting a business license (I have a lot of art to sell and want to open an etsy shop). This means I'll be an official business and am thus, the creative director. Two birds one stone
Update after much research, I have my own business and can give myself the gob darn title. I'm not letting employers keep the door closed on me. I let myself in.
@@1998-c3q lol I did start my own business. That way I can freelance and sell my art. No one is stopping me from making a living doing what I love. I also helped a non profit out for a bit😊

Yes! If you check out my design jobs playlist you’ll see a video about three different types of design jobs :) and am planning a video on options after studying design if you don’t actually want to be designing full time :)
I've been freelancing for about 7 years. I missed working with a team so I decided to applied for a job. I nailed the interview and am qualified for the position. Thing is... I've been my own boss for so many years, now that I am starting a new in-house full-time job in a couple of days I am really stressed out. Last time I work as a graphic designer as an employee was probably 8 years ago. Any tips for people like me who now find a job?
Hiya, I’ve been out of uni for 5 years now and haven’t been working in a design related job. However I have been designing and making things on the side but I still feel really low in confidence in applying for design jobs. It also doesn’t help that I’m not sure what design job I would fit well in. So all in all feeling a bit lost at the moment. :/
Ohh!! I see, portfolio is key. The more realistic the better. Quality over quantity. Great tips!! Thank you so much Charli ! Let's hope to find my first job design or at least an intership soon.
@charlimarie I really appreciated this video. After 1.5 years since my graduation, I finally got a job interview in a digital marketing agency. So your information on how to approach the interview was really helpful. Thanks. Bisous.
Great video! I just finished my first semester of studying graphic design in college and I am eager to continue learning! Your videos are very helpful and inspirational! Keep it up :)
I wish there was information about how to land that second design job. I got laid off after 11 months at my first one. Over 18 months and 1,500 job applications later...no luck. So much for companies wanting someone with experience.
Great advice. I only have luck with internships so far, I did one great one last year and one ok one this year. I hope next year I finally get a full time job as a ui/ux designer.
yes!!! thank you so much for creating this video! i've been struggling with figuring out what to put in my portfolio when i don't have clients or that great of school work, so thanks for this! love the advice on not getting your hopes too high when interviewing, i find i do that a LOT.
Loving the lettering titles... cant wait for your font... Merry Christmas Charli! Hope you get nice things... I landed a job on my grad project internship... i was lucky but this is such a great video for people to get their stuff sorted... Kudos Gurl!
Ive been trying to find work for two years. And have tried everything from writing cover letters, editing my resume, and joining recruitment companies to help me find work. Is there any way you can critique or help me figure out what I can do? I now have experience in the medical field since I've struggled to find a design job.
I've been discouraged for years after graduating. I've had half of my time in school doing projects that had me question how valid they would be in the real world with shoddy results and utilizing very simple techniques when I wanted to learn how to compose high quality photomorphs of ads you'd see in magazines and whatnot. Juggling time to learn not only that but other things, trying a side hustle with a PT job unrelated to the field with a lack of remote jr positions is really bogging me down.
I’ve been in my first “design” job for about a year, but it’s only been about 20% design and 80% data entry/analysis and basic office tasks. What tips do you have for getting your second design job? (Ideally I would like to work at an agency) I’ve been out of college for a year and a half and there are only two student projects that I like enough to use in my portfolio anymore. Also my current job has very strict rules about putting anything we create here into a portfolio :/
sounds like you need to get to work doing personal projects and perhaps freelance projects on the side to build your portfolio up! I will for sure make a video about this in the future :)
