It's great to see Nikon get it right. It's easy to overlook that the actual camera body will end up being less than a quarter of the investment once you've bought your way into the trinity of lenses and beyond. As someone who has been slowly buying Z mount lenses for the Z7 these past few years, the Z9 is now a real no-brainer to cap off an amazing collection. Now if Nikon could get enough shipments out and into the hands of us mere mortals who are patiently waiting and dreaming...

I got it January only because I ordered it the second it was available online. Coming from the D850, it has been worth it even though I am just an amateur. All my F mount lenses work better on this camera than on my D850.

Nikon not only gets it right…they do it right! This is why so many faithful like myself keep shooting Nikon despite the “pressure” to switch. I have always had faith in Nikon and they have always been my preferred system. I did switch to Canon twice in the past 25 years. That was fine, Canon is great. But I never, ever even for a second was considering Sony. I don’t hate Sony. They paved the way, period. Nikon did what they did with the Z9 thanks to Sony. Canon missed the boat and the R3 is a step behind. It has its little eye-AF but it is not comparable to the Sony A1 or Z9. So I agree with you and I am so happy for Nikon. If I had not just bought a D6 and if I didn’t have a D850 with grip, I would I buy a Z9. I ordered one and would’ve been a first to get one. I’m an NPS member and photojournalist so it would’ve been easy to get one. I’m still going to get one. I just am completely satisfied with my current gear and I love my current setup of lenses and cameras. Plus the D5/D6 sensor still has an advantage in low light or “high ISO!” It’s about a 2/3rds stop advantage in low light. Even when you downsize a Z9 file to 20mp, the D6 still has a clear and measurable advantage. For what I do that really comes in handy. But the Z9 is in for a bright future and is already producing world class images at major events. Nikon just does things the right way. The ergonomics and process with Nikon just make more sense than the other brands.

@@patricksmith2553 I never felt any pressure to switch - Sony is for point 'n shooters coming from the smartphone. In my shooting style Nikon was always right.
Having said that - I use Sony e-mount since 2015. Initially for manual focus lenses only. For tricky AF situations - dark animal eyes on dark für - even the A6100 is outperforming anything else. For carefully framed work Sony is a pain

Sony a1 i think will be the top camera for a while still. I think it is so advanced that there's no need to upgrade. If your pictures are not turning out with either camera it's the photographers error. I think the Sony is a little power house and if you need that extra grip you can put it on. You don't have to carry that extra weight especially when your hiking taking pics of wildlife and you have one of those huge lenses to capture your subjects. And don't forget Sony makes sensors for most of these cameras. As for working in the dark. It's called muscle memory. It's not hard to memorize the buttons. Plus all the third-party lenses. I just think people like to jump on the next new not necessarily the best thing. No loyalty imo.

Just before Christmas (2021) I sold my Nikon Z6 and my Nikon Z glass and switched to the Sony A7 IV and a smaller number of Sony lenses... The Sony autofocus is spot on, that was my major reason for switching. But after a month, I still don't have that warm feeling about my camera system that I had with Nikon... I feel like the ISO noise is noticeable higher than I remember with my Z6. I'm wondering if I made a several thousand dollar mistake and should have hung on with my Nikon Z glass a little longer and waited for the Z9 tech to filter down to to the Z6/Z7 mark III's.
Does anyone else feel like the Sony A7 IV has unacceptable noise at 2500 ISO and up?

I have been thru this and it was crazy. Loved my Z6 and even got the z7ii. I went for shoot where the Autofocus really frustrated me. Many shots I thought i got were soft or missed focus when I reviewed it. I sold off all my Nikon gear and lenses and bought into Canon R5. Great camera but every time I saw pictures I took with my Nikon, I felt like crying. I missed the colors and feel. The pictures just ddnt look ‘alright ‘ like i was used to with Nikon.
And more than anything, the RF glasses were killing my wallet! So many good lenses that I couldn’t afford and I found myself putting cheap glasses on the really good R5. I sold all the RF system again after 6months and I am back with Nikon z6ii now. I got some of the best Nikon lenses both Z and F just at the fraction of what the RF was costing me . Dont get me wrong, I lost a lot of money in the sales and trades but I love my pictures more now. I am happy to wait for the next z6iii or z7iii because I know they will have features from the z9.
You will have to settle for what is most important to you and your work. Ill say give it a few more months and see if you come around to love working with the Sony. Its a really good system and all but its no Nikon.

There are lenses coming, like the 85 f1.2 and 800 f8, but no new cameras are planned for 2022. The Z6 II and Z7 II will get firmware updates to bring better AF and EVF improvements. Today Nikon is a much smaller company and their current camera lines, especially the highly demanded Z9, will keep them busy for a few years.

Interesting video, and funny how it highlights points that have a common factor, usability.....
Performance wise there isn’t much difference between the Z9 and the A1, however if undoubtedly the A1 is the camera to have, the Z9 is the one to use; usability, durability and reliability have always been key factors in professional photography, it took Sony a decade to produce a product that is almost usable, whilst it took Canon and Nikon 4 years to be on par with Sony on features and leaps and bounds ahead in usability, they have been concentrating on it for the past 40 years, they have had cameras in war zones, in hostile environments, in the hands of photographers working under all sorts of pressures, an invaluable feedback for deciding what features to prioritise and how to prioritise them.
120 FPS at 11MB sounds like a gimmick, however for a photojournalist, sideline sport photographer, with built in WiFi can make the difference between selling or not the image to the press agencies, a file that is instantly available and way more than good enough for printing.
Illuminated buttons have been around for at least 5 years, and illuminated screens for almost 20, why? Because they are extremely useful.
Canon and Nikon are protecting the sensor from dust simply because it’s a pain to cleaning them.
I love what Sony has done to photography by creating a thunderstorm in the industry, the outsider that has the opportunity and bravery to think outside the box, creating a new and improved market, a market that otherwise was condemned by its own success, 5 to 10 years ago the DSLRs reached the pinnacle point for its technology, its maximum performance. Whilst in terms of image quality and FPS we are still in the field of diminished returns, IQ will need the development of a new technology and FPS have reached a moving picture level, AF technology has benefited enormously from the mirrorless era. There isn’t a noticeable difference in IQ between DSLR and mirrorless, FPS is better in latter but definitely not a day vs night situation, AF on the contrary is a completely different ballgame.
The A1, Z9, R3 and whatever R1 will be, are tools for specific jobs and aimed to specific professionals, unless someone can take advantage and benefit from the extreme features their are just a fancy, a A7R3 or 4, a Z7ll or even D850, a R5 or 5DlV, just to mention a few, will do the same job for most people in most situations, sometimes even doing a better job.

No, I don't think this will be the case.
I think the 800mm f/6.3 will be a PF lens and as such it should be remarkably small (for an 800mm) and also much less $ than a normal 800mm f/5.6. As an example, the current Nikon 500mm f/4 AF-S Nikkor FL ED VR is going for $10,296.95 on Adorama while the the Nikon 500mm f/5.6 E PF ED VR lens is going for $3,596.95 on the same site. You can see that the PF lens going for about 35% of the price of the 'big boy'. It is a stop slower, but at the same time it is much smaller and lighter and the IQ is comparable - so it is an incredible value for the money.
The current Nikon 800mm AF-S Nikkor f/5.6 E FL ED VR lens with the built in 1.4 Teleconverter is going for $16,296.95. Assuming the new 800mm lens is a PF version, and if we apply the same roughly 35% of the price, then the 800mm 6.3 S line lens could be as little as $5,700. I am thinking that it will be a PF as its silhouette on the Nikon lens roadmap is clearly smaller than the upcoming 600mm - by this I infer that it must be a PF or some other tech that makes the lens smaller and lighter at the expense of some speed. Still there is no guarantee that it will be 35% of the price just because the 500 PF is 35% of the full 500mm's price but this should be a reasonable gauge. Also, the 800mm f/5.6 has a built in teleconverter making it an even more expensive lens, the 800 6.3 S will most certainly not have this feature, so perhaps it will be a little less than $5,700.
Still, at $5,700 it is not cheap, but this becomes in the realm of affordability for serious hobbyists, whereas $16k is probably out of the question at any point. Also, $5,700 puts it at the same approximate price point as the 200mm f/2 - Nikon's premier portrait lens and although expensive many portrait and wedding photographers did stretch to get it.
Still, the 500 PF is a full stop slower than the normal 500, so it is strange that this potential 800 PF would only be 1/3 of a stop slower than the big boy - that seems almost too good - like why would anyone pay the extra 11K for a third of a stop - but it does have the teleconverter so who knows.
Either way, the fact that the 800mm is smaller than the upcoming 600mm and the fact that they definitely announced that it is a f/6.3 indicates that this is intended to be a PF type of lens (by this I mean a smaller and lighter and presumably more affordable version of the lens - not necessarily PF tech - IDK).
Either way, I think it is safe to say that it will not exceed $6000 and so it will be affordable to those that really, really want it and can save up a little.

By adopting a PF (Phase Fresnel) lens for the first time in a NIKKOR Z model, a compact and lightweight body is realized, making it highly portable despite being a super-telephoto lens. With its high rendering performance and superb mobility, this lens will reliably support the imaging expression of many photographers ranging from advanced amateurs to professionals."

@@jasond1500 Great - there is confirmation of what seemed very likely anyway just by looking at the silhouette and size of the lens. WIth this knowledge, I would guess that it should be under $6k - I think this is the breaking point number where many advanced hobbyists will stretch to get a lens. Anything above this and certainly anything that is 5 digits (10k and more) are pretty much off the table for all but agencies and very specific and specialized pros that work in niche fields.
Maybe they will surprise us an keep it below $5k but I kind of doubt this, but as long as it is less than $6k my guess is that it will sell very well indeed.

I've stuck with Nikon since 1985 when I bought my first 35mm SLR camera by them. As a professional wedding photographer, I always looked at Nikon's final RAW image itself, which tends to favour more naturalistic results that you might want to tweak later yourself to add a bit of added visual dynamism and punch. So the gimmicks and features that all the other major brands were bringing out never got close to out-weighing this and never once did I ever think of jumping ship. I felt, like Tony and Chelsea that the D850 was and still is the best DSLR camera ever made. And now that my z9 has finally arrived, I can honestly say that they have done it again! I’m amazed at how the so-called camera testers on youtube and on the web reviews cameras. .
Sony A1 and Canon R3 are raised to the skies and that they can run 30 fps RAW according to spec. Both cameras are quite limited with most parameters to reach 30 fps, and the Sony A1 reaches just under 20 fps in normal use.
But what I am amazed of that no one mentions. The image quality on Sony and Canon at higher fps is rather limited. When you select eshutter in the “Studio scene” on dpreview, both cameras are a disaster in DR and NOISE. To get most out of Sony and Canon you have to run them with mechanical shutter. Sony A1 can handle 10 fps and Canon 12 fps with mechanical shutter. Sony will also be limited to 12 bits in "30 fps".
Nikon Z9 always runs constantly 20 fps, with full quality, DR and Noise levels regardless of settings and even with old F glasses. No limits!
It is quite a challenge to have a fast readout combined with high image quality. That Z9 can deliver D850 image quality with a 1/270 readout speed is sensational!
Canon R3 have 1/180 at 24 MP with limited image quality at top speed. To get full quality out of R3 you are limited to 12 fps.
Sony A1 have 1/250 at 50 MP with limited image quality at top speed. To get full quality out of A1 you are limited to 10 fps.
I’m starting to doubt that Canon have the ability in the near future to deliver a R1 that can get close to the resolution and speed of the Z9.
Sony and Canon is not there yet!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Nikon. What we have is everyone that has their own opinion about what "they" want. You and Chelsea have to admit you have been all over the map over the last 3 years. The D850 was magnificent camera. For a Digital Camera, you got it all in one package. But camera bodies change every 2 years like clockwork, and there will be something new in the next 24 months. I admit, I was Nikon until 2011, after a 56-year relationship with Nikon. I moved to another platform that met "my" needs, and I have not moved since. What I have discovered through all of this, each of the cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, and the array of others, is that they will take absolutely beautiful and amazing photographs. It is not what feature is in each brand, it is what is in the 6"-8" behind the eyepiece. Enjoy whatever brand that does exactly what you want and need for it to do. Sorry Tony, it is not a rebuttal to your points, but more of an encouragement to everyone out there who picks the camera for them.

GPS is fine, but it’s slow to acquire and often won’t work in larger buildings. A-GPS uses augmentation from cellphone towers to greatly speed position acquisition and in-building performance. That’s the advantage of linking your cellphone rather than just relying on “GPS” built into the device. Yes, the Nikon 'comeback' with the Z9 is wonderful for us long time Nikon users. I was genuinely concerned about the company, what with their weak financials through the pandemic, and oddly un-finished Z6/Z7 (remember that bizarre Z battery grip...?). But the Z9 is right on the money, in every way, which I hope bodes well for future cameras too...

Thanks for the vid and I agree with the conclusion -- I own a Z9 and have never wanted the Sony A1.
However -- I would have added the fact that the Z9 is far far far more robust than the flimsy A1.
The Z9 fits perfectly in my hand and from the 600/4 - 200/2 to 105/1.4 to 40/2 it pairs perfectly with all the lenses in my collection. The FTZII is a great adapter - works perfectly with all my gold ring lenses AND 3rd party lenses like an Otus.
I took the Z9 and a 70-200+TC14 to a hawk shoot on Saturday and have concluded that I obtained 5-10 times more shots than I would have done with my D6, D850 or Z7.
Earlier in the week I shot Common Kingfishers diving and at 120 fps was able to secure the shot of the bill of the bird just penetrating the surface of the water -- and produce a short vid of the whole dive, catch and recover cycle using the 1.2 second burst. Yes - writing to an ultra fast 128 GB Delkin Black card was a huge help -- other than when shooting faster than 20 fps I use lossless RAW and have not needed to use any of the other smaller file options. Using the programmable buttons on the front of the camera instantly switching between focussing modes -- the Z9 has enabled me to obtain shots I could not have obtained before.

I love my Sony A1 with the 35-150. I also have the 150-600 and a couple others.

I don't know if anyone else has said it yet but the real benefit here is that when one camera maker's technology leapfrogs another's it's a benefit for every photographer in the sense that that "leapfrogging" causes other manufacture's to innovate and compete which in turn trickles down to the photographers...
Right now it's the Z9. Next maybe it's Canon's turn, then Sony... Wash rinse repeat.
It's a great time to be a photographer.

Apparently there's a depth of field issue highlighted by Hudson Henry Photography on all Nikon Z cameras including the Z9 where the depth of field does not go beyond f.5.6 on a f.2.8 lens.. Has anyone noticed this issue??

    • @davidjohnson4451
      @davidjohnson4451 2 роки тому

Ricci Talks of UK and Matt Irwin have addressed that. Since I NEVER buy 2.8 lens now as my 2.8 Nikon lens era was in the 1980s..... I have not experienced this problem. But that is a set up and use issue. My audience demands WIDE depth of field so I shoot at f 8 as much as possible.

As a sony user i feel that most normal people who made fun of canon and nikon in the past years would be right they where slow to move to a clearly better method tech. Now we are at a point that i think these same people can see that both canon and nikon are maybe not always for us but earn the respect that for example the D850 always had. For canon i feel the R5 is the one that is the new baseline and for nikon its the z9. I agree with about 4 points on this list the rest i disagree or don't care about but thats not the point here. If i would be in a nikon user this would be where i would move over from dslr to mirroless and i think the Z7II and Z9 are aimed for that.

I own many of the cameras you speculate about. But USE the Nikon Z fc and Z 50 MORE than the others. I also use an iPhone a LOT. I tested the Z 7 II and Z 7 II before I bought one some time ago, and ended up with the Z 6 II. I have used our Sony A 1 a LOT as well and really wonder if a batch of the user comments are because they bought a Chevy say it is better. The Nikon 850 is a great DSLR, the D500 we have gets FAR more use. The Sony A 1 use of the two SD cards is part of the reason I bought a Nikon Z 9. All of these use scenarios I believe comes down to this.....What counts is being at the best place at the best time with a good enough camera.......

@@davidjohnson4451 In no way trying to attack you but why put sd cards into the A1 if you need the extra speed (except for cost that we all hope comes down). The nice thing about being able to use 2 card formats in the A1 is that you can do both all video modes for example don't need express cards. So can't see how picking a Z9 because of the use of 2 sd cards is a reason i guess you mean that you find the express-a cards not fast enough ? Personally given the buffer depth and write speed i found it a pretty good balance. The A1 provides both options thats why i personally think its a good and understandable compromise and i hope the express-a finds its place in the market so price of cards come down which is at the moment its biggest downside.

    • @davidjohnson4451
      @davidjohnson4451 2 роки тому

@@scb2scb2 I use Express Cards type B in the Z 9 is that is all it will take. I use the cards that are in the camera when I use the Sony A 1. But I have used several different cards in the A 1. The type A cards have not really been given ratings that make me want to use them. I will say I use mostly SD card cameras for the majority of my shooting as they are a very good compromise. Last thing I need is killing ANOTHER computer with a jammed up storage from large file sizes. Cards will come down in cost, that is technology at a fast pace, but INFLATION is going to hurt us all over time.

@@davidjohnson4451 Not sure if i fully graps what you are saying but it sounds that the A1 you have access to only uses sdcards because of price/size and thats a valid point for many people but if you jump to z9 all your old cards can't be used and for video work thats kind of a loss. Not sure what you mean with size on the computer that seems to be a different issue where you prefer the z9 options over the a1 options (and thats fine). On the prices coming down on express-a cards that worries me a little if sony stays the only one that is using them so i personally hope some other brands that have smaller camera bodies like fuji might follow sony in this dual+dual card option. I can share that for me (and yes thats a personal view) sony made a compromise i can live with i have 2 express-a 160G cards and many sdcards and the A1 performs nicely in each usecase. I am also not 100% sure that sony would have been able to jam 2 express-b cards in their current body design and clearly they wanted to stay close to the current size. Anyway good luck with the Z9 its a amazing camera it would be a option for me if they also made it in the z7ii style of body i just prefer that style.
