I knew one of the mechanics that was in the HDT service crews for the Repco reliability trial. He scored one of their spare motors after the event and put it in his HQ ute. Bloody quick ute
Mat Phillips partnered with Brock to win the Race I met Matt and brought his Alfa stepnose that he used to rally back in the 80's Such a humble and great - underrated driver too
It cost Holden a pretty penny for Brock to win. The second car was half a day ahead through the Top End. Holden picked up the bill for the crew of the second car so team orders would apply. A swimming pool was the price for one of the crew. I don't remember what the other two requested.
It was 1979. The VB Commodore was brand new. The Torana had proved itself in race and rally and it's a long way round. The XU1 spec engine was also lighter and better on fuel. The Commodore's had alloy bonnet and boot lid. They used steel wheels, much to displeasure of Holden marketing, because steel wheels bend where alloy break. They still had fly in spare steel wheels to keep the cars running.

" what a little ripper you beauty. ! " 😊
This service panel van has a 5, liter V8 but Brocky had to run a 3.3 liter 6 cylinder. It doesn't seem fair
