A few years ago I had a sister-in-law and a friend who were both getting married in the summer, about 3 weeks apart. Both were having small weddings and receptions and I offered them the flowers in my many flower beds for the tables and wherever else they wanted such as the church & end of the pews, entryway etc. My sister-in-law wrinkled her nose and said she "didn't want backyard flowers, she wanted professional ones". Due to the price she only had a few and they were mostly dyed daisy's with Babies breath and ferns for a filler. My friend accepted my offer and had plans for X amount of table displays, pews, and after seeing all the many varieties I had in bloom only purchased some little roses and greens from the florist and she and her mother created her bouquet to hold. With floral foam from the dollar store to hold them in place and ribbons for the tops of the vases they looked beautiful and matched the colors of their wedding. Sister-in-law was invited to the wedding and wanted to know where she bought her flowers and how much she paid. She was not happy about her professional flowers at all. When she was told that she bought the vases, foam and ribbons from the dollar store and all the flowers at both locations (Chaple and Reception) were from my garden she realized that snubbing her nose only hurt herself. Flowers are beautiful and bring joy to more people than just the person who grew them. Friends who see them and neighbors who drive by all enjoy them too. They bring back memories of good times from the past. Smiles are the proof. Of course the honey bees, butterflies and birds all enjoy them as well. Don't stop putting flowers into the garden along with your vegetables. They do so much good for everyone.

If anyone ever needs vases or mis matched dishes for a bridal party/ shower Facebook marketplace is always wonderful and even more affordable than a thrift store. I bet your friend’s wedding was gorgeous and a good lesson for people not to turn their noses up a nice homemade option. I always add extra flowers in just for the bees and butterflies.

Beautiful story! I have always grown tulips in my front yard. The older lady that lives across the street, would sit outside on her front porch and paint. I have 3 paintings from her. Each painting is of my tulip garden I had that particular year. She said her mother always loved tulips

Becky, I don't know if you know this or not, but at the end of tomato season, if you still have green tomatoes, you can wrap them in newspapers and store in a box with lid and they will ripen over the winter so you always have fresh ripen tomatoes 😊

It's funny, but I was never a morning person AT ALL until I stopped working. The minute I stopped setting an alarm clock, I just naturally woke up earlier. So strange since I was getting the same number of hours, but I think without the stress, I was actually getting *restful, restorative* sleep. Anyway, since then I live to wake up even earlier because there's fog many mornings and I just love going out in the yard with my dogs. They enjoy the light, misty fog, too. It's quiet and mystical - almost spiritual - and they seem to sense that. Such a beautiful way to start a day!

I purchased planters that were more hydroponic than soil. At the end of the season, my husband placed the tops on the ground. I was cleaning up and turned them over. It was wall to wall slugs! Hundreds on each lid. That was the absolutely grossest thing I ever saw! Beer does work well. You can get the cheapest one. If there is still such a thing.

If you take a couple of kernels and chew, if it's sticky or chewy not ready to use, but if hard, ready to make into flour. We grew tons of wheat while I was growing up and that's how dad knew when to combine

    Hey Becky,
I have found your biggest fan in Sweden.. They have. Their own UA-cam channel.. [Recky and Carol] Every time they so an unboxing.. They are an older couple.. They just bought their first home. When she gets a product that you uses she gets really excited ... A fan sent her a House warming gift from her wish list.. She look like a little child openly her gifts from her first Christmas. The look on her face when she saw they sent long wooden SPATULAS.. that you use. She said, Becky from Acres Homestead use these.. I have searched every store in Sweden .. The stores in Sweden do not carry these SPATULAS.. Someone sent her seedling trays. She was so excited giving you and your channel a shout out.. They are moving in to their home in a couple of weeks.. where she has garden space.. She is learning to garden from your channel. Some one sent her glass baking dishes... She got all excited.. Becky uses the dishes to make freezer meals.. Lol.. I take it Carol from Recky and Carol is your largest fan in Sweden..

Hi Becky. I'm from the UK. I only have a small garden and I grow scarlet runner beans in pots which are stood in bowls to keep them well watered. I only had 5 pots and 3 plants to a pot , with 6ft canes in a tripod shape in each pot for them to climb. They have been very productive this year and I have only ate them as fresh green beans cut into shards. I always leave a few pods to grow large for seed for the following year. I was very interested when you stated that you were letting yours grow as a dried bean. Never even gave this a thought ❤

I like your challenge this year. It is way better than last one. It makes you eat fresh food, that is full of good stuff and make you enjoy your garden. The difference in the pumpkin beds can be in the amount of sun they get. The trees on the side can make some of them stay a little bit longer in shade. The same with tomatoes and slugs. They may have more protection and thrive in one bed and not in other. You can observe the sun and plan the garden according to it. I sometimes plant things in more shade to make some kind of succession

Becky, I strongly suggest you start mulching around your plants.
Use organic material, eg. straw, shredded leaves, dried grass clippings etc.
As the mulch rots down, it adds to soil fertility.
It also acts as a temperature and moisture moderator, as well as weed deterrent.
    Love your show!
    Blessings from Australia.

You can get slugs away from your plant by putting a little beer in the bottom of a plastic container buried at soil level so the slugs can get drunk and drown. Be sure to keep the dirt out of the beer. You only need an inch of beer. Place them in three spots in your size beds. They use this method in France.😊

From living on the West Coast, I know air flow is really important in the garden. Having enough space between plants. Checking sun direction, not having one vegetable plant shade another. It is not just soil conditions. It is also important to think about maturity size of plants so beds do not end up too full, cramped, keeping moisture in. Check wind conditions too. Where beds are in the garden impacts plants as well. End of a row or in the middle. All of that will impact your garden.

My mom was raised in a wheat growing family and my dad has family that are wheat harvesters in Benton county. My Grandfather, Uncles and cousins have all told stories of it raining after the wheat has turned gold and then they couldn't harvest the wheat. Big financial loss. So from what I understand if it is green they will pop back up. But after it starts to turn colors its to late. Its a loss. I also remember as kids going out in the field and chewing on the kernels to see if it was ready to harvest as the lady told in the comment below mine. So nice to hear.

    You can also
Pull up entire plants that are covered with tomatoes and hang them in you garage Or downstairs (if you are worried about slug loss) you will have vine ripened tomatoes for months! I live in Colorado and one year I had tomatoes all winter!❤️

Well, if you’re willing to take our advice, order a couple of sets of burner covers for the stove they are a perfect height for placing in the garden with beer poured inside. The slugs can easily get up into the beer and drown. They love the smell and I’m guessing they love the taste of beer. Our hosta plants were being eaten up by slugs in the garden at church. My husband and I placed these burner covers in the garden, filled them with beer and within one day, we had 10 to 12 to 15 slugs in each of our burner covers. It works like a charm.

Hi Becky thank you for sharing with us! A tip I received about keeping slugs out of my garden was using crushed egg shells around the perimeter. They won't cross because it is sharp and they don't want to hurt themselves. Just thought since you have chickens it might be a great way to help.

Becky thanks for all the wonderful videos - especially gardening and cooking. Great stuff! About soil health - totally agree that we should feed the soil not the plants. My opinion about landscape fabric is that it kills a lot of the microbiome in the soil. If you can, better to use leaves to cover the beds in the fall rather than landscape fabric.

I live in SW France. We had a rainy and chilly start to the summer. Temps really didn’t get hot until July. We felt there was only 5 or 6 really hot days-temps in the upper 30’s C and low temps at 20C. Now was low temps of 5C! I just got back from a nice walk through my village and saw my neighbor’s tomato vines. There were lots of lovely green ones but none that are ready to harvest!

I have been successful in eliminating hornworms and slugs in beds by using broken eggshells on top of the soil. Break them up and make sure there are lots of jagged edges. Skins of slugs and worms are ripped up by jagged shells.

I really do recommend that you lay down a layer of salt at the base of all your raised beds to control your slug problem I know when it rains you will have to relay down the salt. Or you could run a couple of lengths of Copper wire along the wooden planks that are on top of your beds it will completely eliminate your slug problem and some other pests.

I’m going to do something different with my pasta sauce next year. I have discovered an extreme difference in the flavor of roasted tomatoes, onions, garlic and peppers that I am just going to can in small batches in my electric canner. I have put the small batches of tomatoes in the freezer and saved but to make a big batch of pasta sauce but you can’t really roast them after they have been frozen. So I’m just doing smaller batches of pasta sauce next year and getting that wonderful flavor.

Becky, pumpkins continue to ripen and dry out after picked so if your pumpkins seem like they need a few more weeks close to your first frost, they can continue to ripen inside if you pick them and keep them in a cool dry place. Still use your nail to check the skin to tell when its ready
