Channel 5 were going to use my Cup for this. But I couldn't get the time off work at short notice ! The guy who's car they used was a member of Cliosport. He said Plato took his Cup out and returned to tell him there was a misfire. He got it sorted at a garage nearby and then they did the shoot. New suspension struts on the 182 would have made this much closer IMO
I agree with robcat I have a 182 an love it I still think it looks and sounds better and on a road that we drive everyday I reckon a 182 would pull through
I love my 182 cup. The 200 looks nice but having seen it in the metal I think it's too big and heavy to really be a valid comparison. Great car in it's own right though.
the clio 172-182 is considered one of the best hot hatches ever created. The renault sport signatures makes a smile everyone who get a clio sport or megane sport. nice cars!
A V6 clio is also one of the scariest cars i've ever been in, a FWD clio could keep up because its far easier on the limit than a RWD short wheelbase V6, which you'll need mad skills to extract it's full potential.
Don’t think the V6 was all about useable power it was a statement by Renault saying we thought of a bonkers car and just went ahead a put it in to production you’ll never see the likes of it again.
if ya into cars buy EVO magazine, they rated the 182 as the best hot hatch of all time when it came out,the 200 is the current fav hot hatch so both are mega drivers cars, the time around the track doesnt mean half as much as the amount of fun n driver involvement u had on the way round
1 seconds on a lap is a significant difference, but just replacing the rack bushes and track rod ends etc on a tired old 182 would probably see it halved or even eliminated, all these tests comparing new with old are flawed in that respect, the testers never spend money on the old car to make it as new again, so its not a fair test of the real comparison between the two when they were both new.
At the time the 182 was only 5 years old, I appreciate cars deteriorate but it's not an original mini, fiat uno or renault 5 etc. Cars last better than they did in year's gone by.
I'd argue that the 200 can brake better and can pick up more speed on straights out of corners due to the power advantage, meaning it's a better track car. The 182 should be quicker round the bends due to it's weight and smaller dimensions. If you watch the video, the 182 is faster through the slower bends, but the 200 slowly takes the lead as the track straightens out. I'd say it's the chassis, suspension and brakes, not the handling.
Ive got a 182 cup and love it, Renault seem to have lost there way abit on what a hot hatch is about, the 200 is just to big and heavy. A hot hatch should be a small 3 door shopping car with stiff suspention and large engine. Now Renault go put the 200 engine into the Twingo......job done!
@@idiotsandwich6727 They lost it because the 182 was put up against a car that was two Clio sport generations newer but no quicker I wouldn’t call that a very good evolution of a car and I’d bet in a straight line drag the 182 would have it.
@@Robcatist renault sport cars are cars for corners, not for straigt line speed, i have a 172 and a 197. Ive also drive a 182 from my friend on the nordschleife, but the 197 cornes and behaves so much better. Clio 197/200 are the best handling clios to have existed.
@@Robcatist a 200 is quicker and in reality if you had a crash which one would you want to be in. It happens you’ve got to think about protecting you and your passengers. There are idiots that take drugs and crash into cars at high speed. Life is more important than being in a lighter car.
I've driven 3 hot clio's now in my short driving experience, first was a ph2 172, second was a 197 and now I drive a ph1 172. Out of all of these the 197 had the most adjustable chassis on the limit for me, It was more neutral than the other two for my driving style. however the ph1 172 has been by far and away the most entertaining. I know it was never the fastest but it's definitely the most entertaining and predictable of the bunch. The ph2 was good but lacked a little spark that the ph1 had.
the 182 lost simply because the handling is nowhere near as good as the new clios plain and simple. I own a 182 and love it to bits but while it is a fraction quicker in a straight line due to better power/weight ratio the chassis improvements on the newer clio make it better for the track ;)
Im thinking the 200 was new or nearly new at the time of test while the 182 was around 4 years old so maybe the comparison wasnt as accurate as it could be with the 182 probably being a bit more worn on the suspension and bushes etc....all cars get a little tired with time and miles.
Correct - I have a 182 aswell, they are mental in a straight line, 197/200 better at cornering - do you have induction kit on yours? If so can you recommend a decent one? Thanks
I own the poverty pack sport 172, it's as reliable as a politicians promise, but when it's working, a great drive. A great chasis, a good amount of power, an appalling level of reliability.
@mobeen1982 would look better with the spoiler and if it wasnt in pea green, but the spoiler is an expensive optional extra, starting at 15,700 grand sounds fair enough but after you've specced it up to a decent standard with anything else you want it ccould be anything up to about 18k + bit of a rip
golf mk2 16v that was driven by Tiff(tuned to 175hp) made 45.9secs on this track... so i still think that newer cars are no replacement for older tuned cars...
Customer walks into the Clio Sport dealer "Would you like some fine handling with your chassis Sir?" Yes please. "Would you like a surprising amount of power from the 2 Litre engine Sir?" Yes please "Would you like some reliability to go with that?" No thank you.
This was really dumb. They did the 182 lap once... and from a standing start at that. They gave the newer car 2 extra laps for the driver to adjust to the car and to already have speed coming into the new lap. If they are going to test two cars on lap times, they need to give them both a fair chance. Not even MENTIONING that the 172/182s run significantly better after a little bit of a thrash to warm them up.
As much as I love the Clio RS models I don't like the sound of the engine it just sounds so strangled and like its going to explode. Not bassy enough either. Civic Type R all the way.
new fiesta st 970kg? don,t think so especially with all the health and saftey bollocks. fiesta st now weighs 1265kg. so a weight saving of 300kg ?. i just fell off my chair laughing.
new fiesta ST will be faster than the 182 as it weight 970KG, which is less and has the same power - plus it will be faster round the track - just have to wait until next year before the ford spanks the 182

nice cars!
182 is way faster and feeling like karting. Pure racing car ♥️🔥
Obviously isn't faster or it would of got across the line quicker.
This is a pro racing driver driving these cars, to anyone else there would be no difference

Not liking the front end of the 200 though looks like a 107! But tbh i wouldn't be complaining with either of them 2 cars. Both very good hot haches.
179bhp,182 ps ; )

it would lose to both. you would need honda s2000 to keep with these around any track. MG TF 160 would spew a headgasket just trying to keep up. lol

which series is this from??
awesome video! loving the cars!!
Fifth Gear
Put it up against a 182 trophy and suspect the result would be different...
There are Clios 3 Trophy to...
I don’t think there would be much in it in all honesty.

How times have changed?
im sorry, i saw an ad for a special edition corsa VXR today, it was 22,000 pounds, with 204bhp. why would anyone buy it over this?
but i also heard that a v6 is slow - compared to modern hothatches.
J'adore la Clio 2 rs ph 3.
Bung on some different suspension and uprated brakes and i think the 182 would just have it.

@greggy50. afraid not m8. as good as the trophy is. it just don,t generate the grip the 200cup does.

I wonder how my mg tf 160 would get on against them 2 round that track?? Id love to challenge that!!
Badly
@@retobowbeans lol
It would suck just like everyone who owns a mg tf 160
lol should of used the trophy
So a 200 is probably on par with the Trophy. That seems fine to me.
Or at least the cup?

with the benefit of hindsight we now know the Fiesta ST definitely did not spank the 182, far from it, despite being 13 years newer
Shame they both look as bad as the other inside... ugly hard plastic with no design
but that's not what people buy these cars for
wait you're talking about the insides right?
