Exploring Lincoln Beach Amusement Park New Orleans | Abandoned Since The 1960s

  • Update: In the beginning of the video what we thought was a homeless camp, turned out to be a worksite camp setup by artist Reggie Ford who is working diligently to clean up and bring back Lincoln Beach.
In New Orleans East, during segregation, an amusement park and beach was built for People of Color to go since the bigger Pontchartrain Beach was for whites only. When the Civil Rights Bill was signed in 1964, Pontchartrain Beach opened to everyone and Lincoln Beach was closed and abandoned in 1965.

A few years ago I made a video about Pontchartrain Beach not knowing the full story about it being segregated until the 60s. I'm glad to finally be able to tell a more full story. Thank you for watching! ❤️

Not a homeless campsite @3:42 whatsoever. Thats the makeshift home of the head of volunteers, Reggie Art, who has been rebuilding Lincoln Beach over the past year. That's his campsite he uses so he can stay out there for longer periods of time to restore the beach.

I thought it was awful clean for a homeless campsite. Most people don’t care enough to keep the homeless encampments clean you see plastic bottles and stuff everywhere and trash. Even in Hawaii the tent city was nice but not taken care of like this

Great video. I'm amazed that the pool is not only filled in with plant life, but seems to be completely demolished! I took those photos back in 1986 when I was a student in the UNO Film Department. We had permission to be on the property as a shooting location. At that point, Lincoln Beach had been "abandoned" for about 20 years. There were still some structures, and the tunnel into the park wasn't yet flooded (blocked off, but not flooded). I hope they are able to clean the place up and transform it into a park that the surrounding neighbors can all enjoy. Thank you for making this, and for including my photos.

I was a structural design engineer to rehabilitate Lincoln Beach in the mid-1990's. All that got done was safety items like demolition of the pool, restaurant building, very large locker room, a 500 ft. long pier where you slipped, etc. I did design a rehab of a pump station for the tunnel access and the rock breakwaters at the east and west ends. The curved column arcade aea structures were salvageable and it was my intention to do so. Several hurricanes have caused much more damage the the construction of the entrance floodgates. Bac in the day, Lincoln Beach attracted top notch traveling and local entertainment.

Wow! About a year and a half post-Katrina, I was working with a film crew shooting in Little Woods. For the most part, everything seemed completely decimated. Boat were in trees, and all houses were abandoned. I am impressed even ruins are present nearly 16 yrs later. Great work!

It all eroded away after Hurricane Georges. That was wall and dry land where you are. The beach went out a fair ways as late as the late 80s. My mom too is there as kids. When I went again in college the water was just before the wall but behind the wall was still dry concrete.

It is so so sad I am 70 years old my sister use to take me every week end it was so many ride and a large stage they use to have so many ContestS and giveaways and you won. Doing that time the twist was out and along came the monkey. When I become 14 years old I would go to the beach along with friends and class mates. I also meet my frist love. Years later I became pregnant. We had a healthy baby boy his name was Darren Lamar Robinson. Henry and I was not marry but we stayed so close together. Our son Darren was so kind to many friends. And about 10 yrs later I also lost my best friend. Henry we loved each other so much but never got marry the last time him and I was together we sat down and talked about how we first met at Lincoln Beach. We laugh so much about when we meet and for some reason we found a very old album it brought back so many memories I started to cry and he kiss the tears from my eyes the album we were listening. to was by the drifters and he remember all the songs we shared together sitting in the sand at Lincoln Beach I loved him so much but he had his life and so did I The best part about this was we only separated our selfs no more than a month apart
We laugh about it It was like we could not leave each other side I know what you must be saying why didn’t you and him get marry I myself did not get marry because. I enjoy livening a single life Yes he ask several times but I felt it just wasn’t my time but he knew I love him and our son he knew nothing could keep us apart. Only the love o my heart could never be replace for my son nor his daddy Henry Dunn.

In the late 1970's me and a group of friends of mine went and checked out Lincoln beach. We were teenagers. Back then there were no trespassing signs and people had been arrested or run off by the police. At that time it was surreal. the bathhouse still had the benches and lockers and there were even some clothes lying around. There was a lot of broken glass and still had some of the old equipment and furniture in the concession and arcade area. There was a large metal tank of some sort and a tower with a catwalk it was shown is some of your video . We climbed it and rocked it back and forth which was foolhardy because had it broke we would have been seriously injured or killed. Later when we went back it had fallen down from rusting at the base. The way things were left it was like one of those end of the world movies were everything was just abandoned. Another time when went back there , the NOPD Swat team were doing some sort of urban warfare training. It's amazing to see what it looks like now and that people are allowed on the property including the homeless encampments.

That’s cool!! Also what we thought was a homeless camp turned out to be a guy working very hard to clean the place up in hopes to get it reopened to the public. He has done a LOT of work with some other volunteers too. It’s in way better shape than even when we went.
