    8:15 the Swiss embassies also do this for other countries:
    The Swiss embassy in Teheran (Iran) is responsible for the US and Saudi Arabian interests.
    The Swiss embassies in Kairo (Egypt) and in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) are responsible for the Iranian interests.
    And also the Swiss embassy in Moscow (Russia) is responsible for the Georgian interests.
    And since this year the Swiss embassy in Caracas (Venezuela) is also responsible for the US interests in Venezuela.
    Until 2015 the Swiss embassy in Havanna (Cuba) was also responsible for the US interests.
    Switzerland and Sweden are the two countries which hold the most mandates as protecting powers (I think mostly because of there long lasting neutrality).

    (0:40) I guess the map missing UK is an "EU" map that General Knowledge imported; that is, a map that someone estimated would be the EU. - It has removed UK, which is still in EU, and has added Iceland, Norway, Switzerland that are part of other agreements, but not EU, then also Bosnia, Serbia, (Kosovo), Albania, Macedonia. - Although the map does contain Kaliningrad, and the northern peninsula of Russia. So it is very inconsistent ... like someone was guessing and didn't look up any data.

      I agree! The United Kingdom still rules a few British Overseas Territories, which is basically a modern word for British colonies that weren't granted independence (or given to China, in Hong Kong's case). These British Overseas Territories (BOTs) are located in a few places around the world, mostly in islands in the Atlantic Ocean, some in the Pacific, and in a few other places. As these BOTs exist on both sides of the world, the message stated in the British motto "The sun never sets on the British Empire" still holds true, even if the phrase "British Empire" is mostly used in talking about an award.

      Agree it would be interesting to see embassies only. But I think they way he was counting them was the opposite, as in not the number of "missions" within a country but the number of "missions" a country has abroad, so it does skew the numbers, but more so in favor of European countries because they have tend to have a lot of honorary consulates in said large countries with lots of large cities. For example I can pretty much guarentee you that Spain and Germany are on the list because of consulates they have in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, China, etc.

    There used to be a difference between ambassadors and ministers. Ambassadors were between so-called Great Powers and the others had Ministers. The resurrected Polish Republic after 1919 insisted on ambassadorial ranking. Israel has a large number of ambassadors and embassies considering it's small size, but that is because Israel's embassies, consulates, and missions serve as a liaison to Jewish communities throughout the world. Also during the time of the German Empire 1871 - 1918 several of the German states Bavaria, Saxony, Wurttemberg had their own ministers in Berlin, Vienna, and a few other capitals and vice-versa.

      Exactly... it’s represented by an allied nation. Meaning that they have some sort of diplomatic mission to the country.

    • @Lord_Imrahil
      @Lord_Imrahil 5 років тому

      @@braydenbronstein1190 It is not represented by an allied nation, more a neural one, especially as the representation goes both ways, so the Iranians are represented in the US by switzerland as well.

      Switzerland might be known as “neutral” in international questions, but it remains a close ally of the United States. The Swiss and us Americans are very similar, we’re like brothers. Beautiful country indeed, I’ve been there. But of course they remain neutral in international affairs, like Sweden. But both Sweden and Switzerland are American allies, and in case of war, they know that Uncle Sam will be first on the scene to help.

    • @Lord_Imrahil
      @Lord_Imrahil 5 років тому +1

      @@braydenbronstein1190 It is true that Switzerland is more on the side of the western nations, but they are not part of NATO and do still have conscription, which allows for a quit large army compared to their size. Second they do not really have to fear any of their neighbors, so no need to think about getting defended by the US, especially if anyone but the neighbors would attack they would need to go through a NATO member, which would trigger Article 5.
      In response to being brothers, it is kind of true, as part of the modern constituation of switzerland was based on the US constitution, but changes like proportional representation and pubic iniciatives and referendums have changed that up a bit.
      Economically the US and Switzerland might be kind of important, as there is a sizable amount of trade, but there are no things like free trade agreements, so it is hard to say that they are close allies.

    • @braydenbronstein1190
      @braydenbronstein1190 5 років тому +1

      Lord Imrahil
      The US is Switzerlands second largest export-market, with Swiss exports to the US making up around 62 billion dollars worth of exports. Second only to Germany, with around 67 billion. Considering where Germany is, and where the US is, that’s pretty amazing. American exports are the third largest imports in Switzerland, and American companies employ around 100.000 Swiss people. Meanwhile Swiss companies employ around 500.000 Americans. Switzerland was the seventh largest investor in America during 2017-2018, with around 310 billion dollars in Swiss investments. And the US was by far the largest investor in Switzerland, investing almost 460 billion CHF (roughly the same amount in dollar) during 2017-2018. Swiss tourists also favored the US over any other country, as the US was the most visited country by Swiss tourists in 2018, with New York (my hometown) being the prime destination. And the close relationship between US universities and Swiss universities, American banks and Swiss banks, etc, make the relationship even stronger.
      Switzerland is the only country I would like to settle in. I’ve visited basically all of Europe, and no other country compares to Switzerland. One thing happened when I visited Switzerland last year. Which was that, on my second day of roaming around the city of Geneva and the beautiful nature reserves outside the city, suddenly, I could breathe properly again. I’ve had problems with Adenoids since I was 10 years old. I’ve had them removed surgically, but they keep coming back. I can still breathe in with my nose, but it’s usually very heavy and feels like I’m having a light cold. Sometimes my head hurts, my nose hurts, my eyes get red amongst other symptoms. But, in Switzerland, I felt nothing. I felt like I was cured. I told my boss about the incident, and he said that the Swiss have the cleanest air in the world and that a trip to Switzerland was better than any medication. I’m seriously considering moving to Switzerland. I know both German and French, my job has a close relationship with several Swiss corporations, so I could maintain the job which I have now (corporate lawyer and financial/law advisor) without any problem. So there isn’t anything in particular I worry about.
      I’m sorry I got out of topic. The point is, the US and Switzerland are pretty close allies. Whilst not directly a NATO-member, it still maintains an important role in the West.
