Someone once commented that every once in awhile, the universe decides to bless a young teenager from England with voice of a blues singer from New Orleans…Steve Winwood is that person. He was with the Spencer Davis Group starting at age fifteen, then formed Blind Faith, then Traffic before starting his solo career. He still sounds the same.
Probably the only person who can say that before he turned 16 he had already played professionally with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley.
I live in Brazil Here Steve is not so popular. Almost unknown I have 67 years and the first time I listened him was a big surprise. About 40 years ago. In 1998 he came to Rio de Janeiro to play. Me and my wife went to the show. Was fantastic. He is a genius and like to be a simple man. People dancing and singing all the musics. A bright night. Unforgetable A great day in our lives. When I put his musics to play, people stays surprised and ask me: who is this guy?. Its ever the same. Fantastic
Winwood was a muscial genius. "Can't Find My Way Home," is one of his sweetest vocals. Check out Blind Faith and Traffic. I love the striped pajama outfits. Bless them, they were just kids. Mindblowing isn't it? Mine was truly the luckiest generation musically.
Thank You Honi. Wow! Check out some of Winwood's later stuff with Traffic and Blind Faith and especially Last Exit with Blind Man and Feelin Good ! Masterwork. Yeah, you could call it Genius. He admits to following the Great Master Ray Charles. He does it pretty well. Thanks.
I heard many good things about Steve Winwood in the 70's. Now I understand. The term "Blue eyes Soul" is such a cheesy term with only a handful of whites that actually performed R&B composition knowingly or not. It's a little complicated what Soul is. For example : Alive and Kicking, Redbone, Soul Survivors, and of coarse Steve Winwood. I would have thought he was Ray Charles Brother. Good reaction Honi Mama!!!
Now try Leon Russell's "Stranger in a Strange Land" or "A Song for You" or you might try a little Paul Butterfield's "In My Own Dream" or "Mystery Train"
Nobody is a bigger fan of Winwood than I am but according to Wikipedia this song was recorded in 1966 which means Steve was 18. Remarkable just the same.
think tom jones ,paul mccartney ,the righteous brothers bill medley ,bobby hatfield, patsy cline, dolly parton ,a voice is just that person, not a hue of skin tone
He is a genious
Off the scale, god given talent!!!

Jan Fitzgerald the universe also gave us two other singers like Steve Winwood, Ray Charles and Chicago’s Terry Kath! In my opinion that is!
steve winwood was a child prodigy and still sounds great today in his 70s. React to his "Can't find my way home" by his fireplace. It's incredible.
Probably the only person who can say that before he turned 16 he had already played professionally with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley.

No, he was 17 or 18...this film came out in September 1966. Still a helluva voice even for that age.
I know Steve’s music pretty well but I never noticed until I watched this how much a Ray Charles fan he clearly was!! This is SOOOO Ray Charles!!
Man, I knew he started at 15, but it's so weird to hear that voice coming out of that body. Dayum.

If you close your eyes you hear Ray Charles. Steve Winwood was a 15 yr. Old force of nature, ( and still is, though no longer 15 ).
