- All the way from Florida to Glasgow, we were lucky enough to chat to guitar legend Steve Vai while he is tearing it up on the road with fellow guitar legend Joe Satriani. Steve has been a good friend to guitarguitar over the years and for our 20th anniversary we couldn't wait to get the lowdown on what he's been up to! Steve goes over his long and storied history with Joe Satriani, finding your own authentic voice and the genius of Robert Fripp.

always worth listening to Steve whether he's playing guitar, or talking.
At the 40 minute mark, this becomes very profound. Having the ability to first do something, and then `let go' so as to allow the immediacy of the moment to essentially gift you the path upon which to go, is a profound articulation of how first gaining the technical skill to "play" can lead one to `letting go' and thereby listening to the muse. All the practice and work developing skill and knowledge is merely a means to an end without the brackets of an end. One learns through doing the work how to play. The key is releasing into one's unique space within which the channel flows beyond whatever mediated tools or reflex exercises one defaults towards. The space where the immediacy of an inner vibe or light or energy just guilds one's articulation of that which previously was prethematic and of the `yet to be'. Steve is always so beautiful in his example.
Totally agree! Check out Uell S. Anderson’s “The Magic in Your Mind” for more profound insights like that. I didn’t confirm it but heard from an unauthorized biography that this book was a factor in Steve finding his way early in his career while with Frank Zappa and the Mothers. Great read!

Great interview, Steve is one of the greatest composers of the 20th Century. Btw that 6/8, 7/8 polymetric "looping" thing Steve's describing is called an Isorhythm, to give it its technical term :)

Beyond Amazing, no wonder Frank Zappa snagged him up. 😊. Three G tours were great as well.... when he mentions hear training that is very important! and should be developed at younger a age😊 great well rounded interview.
Steve is truly a legend, and the impact he makes both through his playing and his words is incredibly enriching every time. He's undoubtedly one of the finest guitarists around. We love you, Steve, live on! 🔥🔥🔥
I love how steve still sounds like a New York dude after all those years in La La land. yes finding your own voice is a very integral aspect of playing guitar or any instrument weather your a shredder or your more into songwriting or just sound scapes ,what else is the point
it's incredible to see someone break down an amazing part or solo but let's face it the original is what everybody copies so isn't obvious
be yourself . true dat I think steve sounds like he was more into shredding and being technical when he was younger I've seen him with Zappa
Dave lee Roth when the shredding really took off and the last ten years when it seems to be more about more expression , not that he has't always been expressive ,onlyJeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix , Adrian Belew and tom morello seem to be in that realm in that category ,of course
Fripp , Holdsworth and now Mancuso and many many others have done astronomical things as well. In fact I just saw Pay Metheny solo no band same weekend as Satch-Vai in Orlando Fl , Pat is better then he's ever been ,father time hasn't got him yet go see him.
I saw the Satch/Vai tour last week in Florida! They played Sea of Emotions, Pt.1, and it was amazing. \m/

I love Steve Vai. He has always been a musical inspiration and in the past few years he has indirectly become a spiritual inspiration. I discovered the author U.S. Anderson because Steve referenced U.S. in a UA-cam video “biography of Steve Vai.” That video was the reason I read “The Magic in Your Mind” and “Three Magic Words,” and it has changed my life. Steve’s comment at 48:30 comes right from that vein, about making an authentic statement to the universe to find your own voice and then it has to happen.
Steve is a great human being and source of light in the universe.
I remember Steve talking about this stuff when he did a seminar at GIT in 1984/5 time (I had the video) This was around the time when he was in Alcatrazz. I never read the books but was really interested to find out that that he had a philosophy about music rather than just one of those 80's hairspray hairdos shredding notes. He has been my guitar inspiration since 1981 when I heard him on Frank Zappa's records then had my brain melted by Flexable and Leftover. Ahh, why didn't you ask if the Satch/Vai might come to Europe as the US tour seems to be doing really well.
