    I love this. Ugh, i just dropped $400 on steady racks the other day. I'd love this option as it seems more flexible but in my garage, it's such a high ceiling I'd have to figure out a way to bring an overhanging shelf out with enough support to hold the bikes. Hmm...got me thinking though... What were those peg boards? Where were they from? I need me some of them to hang helmets!

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  3 роки тому +8

      I dropped a shelf from the ceiling too. Works great for gear bags. I have a metal storage box shelf i got at Home Depot in the garage It’s rated for 600lbs. The rail could tie into that shelf too. 300lbs of bike and 300lbs of gear.

      @@gregoryjhickmanIt's 8 foot. Man I'd do a ladder and loft space above the bikes perhaps. The pegboards are on Etsy and the hooks are my design and you can download the and 3d print them from my thingaverse page.

    This is a really clean, clever, functional idea. Well done. I'm in the same boat trying to tighten up my storage game, but I've never come around to the idea of hanging my bikes from hooks (or even cradles, like Steady Rack). There's something about imparting load (albeit no more than 30 lb) through the headset via hooks that never sits well with me. I realize we smash these bikes around on trail, but the load paths is different and not as prolonged as it is when the bike just hangs... Never rubbed you wrong?
    I love the idea of floor racks; easy in/out and no lifting... I'm contemplating a sliding floor rack system, but your solution is undeniably efficient!
    Thanks for all the fun content! See ya out there!

      marTo rocks Thanks! When have room i like storing my bikes flat for sure. It’s just a lot easier too. Most springs I automatically expect to change some fork seals. This last year with the bikes hanging inside i haven’t even had to do that. The cold seems to be harder than the hanging. I’ve never had any issues and usually break my bikes crashing them. My personal feeling is that these bikes are never gonna suffer from 30lbs of force. I’d probably be most concerned about carbon rims but no issue ever. Have you seen the Santa Cruz crew try to break a carbon frame? The force on the bike is similar to a flat landing but with about 1/15 of the energy. Figuring I’m 170 the bike is 30 and 2.5 to 3gs of force. Anyway, as they say, your mileage may vary. Stoked you’re liking the content and don’t be shy about sharing ideas for shows you’d like to see too.

    I went a little different route and purchased a barn door kit on Amazon (DIYHD) for my garage, but did use the jumbo bike storage hooks from the listed link. I'm not sure if the hooks were different but would highly recommend 3/8 nuts and not 5/16, or just pick up 8 of each. And a ratcheting wrench set (will need a 7/16 and 1/2 for each nut). Though the 5/16 washers were the perfect size. Great design though! Worked like a charm once I worked out the kinks.

    • @danielgarcia8456
      @danielgarcia8456 3 роки тому

      @@millerj826 I think it really depends on where you want to mount, but I installed in my garage. The way the studs run and the ceiling height forced me to run two steal L brackets from the rafters attached to a 2 x 4 at the bottom. I then attached the barn door slide to the 2 x 4. I ordered the "DIYHD 5FT Raw Material Galvanized Box Track Ceiling Mount Sliding Barn Door Hardware for Exterior Barn Door" off Amazon. The kit includes the barn door slide, two rollers and the hardware. Was probably more expensive than doing it the way in the video, but I paid for the convenience of not having to drill. The directions suck by the way but there's videos online. Overall worked great. My only gripe is the hooks don't exactly fit into the included rollers as easily in the video, but I made it work.

    This concept is very similar to the 8 or so sliding hooks I have to hold my choice of rucksacks in a cupboard by the front door. The hooks are made of steel, and are threaded over a normal wardrobe rail hanging under the top shelf, which has my hats on. The pack of hooks cost about $3 equivelant.
    Now, a rucksack is not at all heavy, so the hooks don't need sophisticated rollers on in order to move. In fact, it is all very simple. The hooks are just a bit stronger than those that would hold up a shower curtain.... but, like the "wardrobe" of bikes, it is very handy to pull the others aside to get one rucksack in or out.
    On the shelf under the rucksacks stands my bike.. the Brompton folded up is a perfect fit, which was dead lucky, because the shelf was installed 20 years before I got the bike.
    Under that shelf is our wine rack!
    Anything else I can tell you?
    Oh yeah. Good bike rack above. Good video, too. Thanks.

Is this a hassle? I see that the wheel that’s on the hook doesn’t set against the wall. Does this make the bikes kinda wobbly when hanging? What’s the best way to keep them stable?

    I was very nervous putting my brand new beach cruiser on this rack. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxG6JIgwJhur8_Rg8UeQ3EmePzi_wSncL8 But after reading many reviews I decided to get this one and take a chance. When arrived it was very simple to adjust and put together. I also added spike tape over the metal hooks before securing and tightening the straps, and no scratches. I also purchased the top bar made by the same company so that my cruiser sits straight on the rack without having to turn upside down. Extra bungee cords are used to secure the front wheel from flapping and even piece of mind knowing your bike is secure. Definitely recommend...

    Hi Alex,
    Congrats and thanks for the great video. Since I have a room about the same size as the one in the video, I was wondering how you built the wood shelf that the bike rack hangs from, so that it is sturdy enough. Is it a slide-in shelf of solid wood? In my case I would have to cover a width of about 3 meter... Thanks!

      It’s made with 2x6 or 2x4 lumber like a loft floor. Then skinned in an oak paneling. The roller track adds stiffness and should be screwed into the framing lumber.

    Great video and a nice design, but as an engineer, putting a UNC machine nut on a screw thread makes me wince as this literally will not support any sort of engineered load. I realize your bikes don’t weigh more than 30lbs each, but it’s just not safe to do it the way you have. You can buy these J hooks with UNC threads which will reliably hold a load.

      Yeah no doubt. It feels so wrong!! : )
      Holds 180 (me) so I’m not worried about the bikes.

    Is it safe from deformation of the wheel from the weight of the bike?

  • @Spareroom-music
    @Spareroom-music 3 роки тому

    I'm guessing the answer is no given the number of people who store bikes this way, but is there any risk of damage to the wheel/rim with it taking the full weight of the bike?

    • @JoyOfBike
      @JoyOfBike  3 роки тому

      I’ve heard people being concerned about it but in my experience of 30 years and aluminumnand carbon rims I’ve not had an issue. I think a bigger issue can be brakes need a pump after being stored vertically.

      @@JoyOfBike are you referring to hydraulic brakes? Thanks for the heads up. Appreciate the response.

    Nifty rack and execution is flawless! Not for me, but awesome nonetheless. From my experience with bikeracks + kids vertical storage is a no-go. It saves space true, but I don't find it particularly user friendly on a daily basis. Kids are not able to operate it on their own for example. The only vertical I have found useful was an idea for a mobile vertical bike rack. Made out of plywood with wheels on the bottom, so you can move it around the house/garage, should you need to. But for the daily drivers I go with some form of horizontal storage . Kind of less effort for everyone in the house, especially older members of the family, who are not able to lift and hook the bikes before/ after each going out. Just my two cents from buying and assembling bike racks at home.

    BRILLIANT ! I love when someone takes a product designed for one use and makes it better for another purpose and THEN is kind enough to share. Well done. P.S. Why did UA-cam take 2 years to suggest this video to me 😂
