WHEN I started doing this at 15 yrs old in 1975,, We didn't know anything about ropes etc. Just climbing spikes and a belt and a saw. My first topping of approx 76' Pine ( 76' at where I topped ) they warned me it would be a WILD RIDE, BUT hold on, you'll be fine. I think I pissed my pants, well actually I did . Half hitch and a bowline on a bight. Noy incredibly complicated. However, I can't get a good look at his setup on that guide. If that blue line was to bind up and get caught then he'd be having a pretty bad day dealing with the snapback from it.
as a sailor, you can also do the simpliest and efficient way to tie a log like killick hitch or a clove hitch. that way when the log is cut, the rope is not going to slack midair while falling down.
Really wanna know what was extra on that bowline and the speed he did that was absolute expert PHD status, but what the hell was that extra thing going in with that bowline!

Ngl most tree guys use 4-5 knots total and they’re all variations of the bowline. He used a running bowline on a half hitch to have two tie in points on that log and it’s just a variation of the bowline. You got midline and bowline on a bight, bowline with a yosemite finish, and the cows hitch.

I was personally annoyed. This reminds me of a time I was camping all alone in the mountains in upstate New York, and had left a pot with leftover fish and lentils about 80' from my tent.....Black bear circled my tent in the middle of the night, brushing up against it....I could hear him/her breathing.....I thought I was a gonner... When I got up at sunrise, and found that the bear had rattled the pot, but NOT EATEN my food, I was very offended!!! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
as a rock climber this is really interesting to me, in climbing terms he basically removed rope drag to make a harness for the piece of trunk and executed a safe whipper without having control over the drop that’s really cool
@@gwhalin yeah i get that, but at least in my world when we fall we have a small amount of control in the swing after the drop cuz we can use our arms to stop the momentum, the log has no ability to do this and so from a rock climbers pov its very impressive

Easy and quick knots. As a combat engineer and having been on a search and rescue team, there wasn't anything complicated being done here. Practicle, easy, efficient. It just takes a little practice. BUT to the kidnapper I have to ask, how often did you take kid naps and for how long? Or did you mean that you were good at getting your kids to take naps?
Some of us climbers are trying to pretend we are not 60' up in the air and therefore there is no view to enjoy, lol! Been up some trees that had incredible views but damn if i could appreciate it at the time!!
Your rope skill is on point, but I am especially impressed with the knowledge and discipline in bringing the chainsaw safely down, grabbing the tree to support yourself as the top wobbled it, and turning off the chainsaw only when you were safe. Very nice!

You don’t need a certified arborist you just need a well trained climber. I know several arborists who are more shoes on the ground than boots in the air.
I taught my daughter a few good knots, when she was just a child. To this day, I still see her using them. Her favourite is the Thief's Knot. It's something you never forget and can pass down.
I learned knot tying in Army basic training. The bowline is my go-to knot for securing a rope or tying onto equipment. The beauty of it is that it’s easy to untie after putting a tremendous load on the rope.

As someone who has climbed and Ben the ground guy I give you major props because I've never been that high without a bucket. A friend of mine who we just recently lost to the fentanyl crisis was the one that used to do those climbs. Sad part is he had never messed with the stuff in his life but his girlfriend get it and he tried it one time. He was one of the most skilled climbers I've ever known. I've seen him perform this trick at that altitude and ride that crazy ride that comes afterwards!

Made it all the way through! Had a break and a cup of tea half way. Interesting to see the wider view along with the in depth vids.
I had to give the tree dive a 6, it was executed perfectly the knots were superb 👌🏻 but the tree totally missed the pool 😁

I guess they top em and strip em at a prescribed height to harvest the spar as hardwoods?

I worked construction for 40 years. Bowline is the go to knot for electricians, roofers, carpenters and anyone hoisting with rope.
I did this type of work for 23yrs and that is technically what's called a "running bowline" since it's tied back to itself.
Use a bowline to rope jack a 40 inch dbh tree against its lean and lmk if its still easy to untie lmao
